Use Jump Cue Only 3 times a match rule?

Burn all jump cues

I see more tournaments are going to the use of jump-cue only 3 times in a match...esp. 10-ball. You can use your playing cue to jump any amount of times during the match. I think this would be a good rule for all tournaments, both 9 and 10-ball. It gives the pro jump-cue players 3 jumps thier's and the players that feel you should only be allowed to kick and jump with your playing cue their's. Best of both worlds I would say. Johnnyt

Hasn't happened locally yet.

I disagree and think some of the rules/regulations are getting carried away. Either allow it, or dont... one of the other. To keep a tally of how many shots you've jumped seems silly.

Doesn't sound right to me. Are they going to limit the number of kick shots I can do in a match? The number of bank shots that I can attempt?

Just doesn't seem right to me.

It's to make the game harder. Be nice if they did away with jump cues anyway. Most players and fans get how easy it is to jump and that having to kick for them is a lot harder or impossible. Even tv fans get it. Most want the game to be harder, esp. for 9-ball by smaller pockets and very deep self, but mention no jump cues and omg let's not take them away. Johnnyt

Im with Earl on getting rid of the jump cue once and for all. I dont really see Efren using a jump cue that often do you??

Its almost funny because everytime i see someone use a jump cue it almost always ends up in disaster if the ball isnt made. There are times however that im faced with a certain shot and wish i had a jump cue

Now a masse' cue.... That's my weapon of choice

I think its a good compromise for those with strong feelings about using the jump cue. I enjoy some of the other rule changes too that make the game more difficult, like call pocket, call safeties and ball in hand when a shot is missed.

I don't see that perceived advantage of being able to use a jump cue. In all the matches I've seen, the player who decides to jump, loses the game at least 9/10. I think the point is mute.

How about if my normal playing cue is 41 inches long???? Just kidding of course.

In seriousness though, I don't have any issues as long as the rules are being followed. Using a jump cue is a learned skill as is most other skills on the table.

Its all about money
When the predator tour was first started the rules read no jump cues allowed
Between announcing the tour and the start of the tour predator came out with there own jump cue so jump cues are allowed
Just my opinion but i think jump cues take alot away from this great game and in spite of the sales should be outlawed

I personally wish that jump cues are never allowed all-together, and if you want to jump, try jumping with normal lengthed cue.

I think the short cues are too easy to the point where a friend of mine who can't play pool, yet he can jump/make balls with short-cue

<personal perspective>

I agree with you that they will never be banned if the powers that be have their way. Pool is run by boards that seat mostly billiard industry leaders and they all $hit in the same pot. Then you have the promotors that won't ban jump cues because cues are one of there sponsors and they don't want to pi$$ them off. Then you have about 80% of todays players that started playing pool after jump cues came out...so most of them don't want to ban them. Only being able to use a jump cue 3 times a match is a good trade off IMO. After you use your 3 times up you better be able to kick well. Johnnyt

Jumping in some games (8 and 9 ball) has been around nearly as long as those games have. The short jump cue I believe was created as a response to the wishes of poolhall owners who wished to save on broken table lights (opps I broke one in 1980), the break cue was likely created due to expensive ivory ferrules being broken (dang Meucci), the jump break was likely created for players who didn't want to buy separate cues for every situation. Just an FYI , carry on. :grin-square:

I also agree on either allow them or don't. Personally I think they should allow them. I don't jump that often so it wouldn't affect me that often but I while some people think it takes away from the game I think it adds to it. It forces people to play better safes which I think adds a dimension to the game. I remember watching old pool matches on tv where the players when hooked would really only try to get a good hit. Now players are nailing the kick safety. It makes players play better. Some earlier posts state that the player pulling out the jump cue are on the losing end of the game. That is true a lot of the time. You played safe and now they've had to rely on their jump cue. If they player with the jump cue is on the losing end of the deal why complain about them using it? It's a tool in one's repertoire just like a bridge or a glove or chalk. Games evolve deal with it. The only people that complain about it are the people that don't know how to use one while at the same time saying how easy they are to use. It's true with technology that they are getting easier and easier to use to get over a ball but controlling the cue ball after the jump shot still takes a lot of skill and a player that has practiced and studied the use of the jump cue should be awarded for their effort.

Obviously you completely missed my point in my post. Weather it's Efern.. Busta.. Earl.. SVB.... Varner or Archer what i said is just what it is. I think that EARL said it best... Forget all the new gadgets... Breaking from the side rail instead of the box... POOL ISNT A SPORT WITH THESE RULES AND STANARDS!!!! ITS A GAME!!!!!

Irvane Crane and Mosconi and even Hoppe never played with a fricking jump cue and you know why???.... Because they didnt have them!!! Thats the point that i was trying to make.. Forget the jump cue... It only leads to trouble. Why not learn how to kick hit a SAFETY like most pros do instead of JOHNNY CUT CORNERS doe's on JUMP shots???

Overall if you learn how to kick with control you will be the better player than a banger with a jump cue because lets face it... ANYBODY can jump a ball for a GOOD hit.. Not everybody can play a great kick shot WITH A SAFE (in the equation) and play it good....

Just saying... Skill over luck my friend
