Mike Sigel - 21 straight games.

Mike Sigel and Corey Deuel are the two youngest to have ever won the U.S. Open, both 21. I have been unable to find out both of their birthdays. If I ever do, then this factoid can be confirmed positively one way or the other.

How cool would it be for Sigel to really catch a gear that lasts for a few years now! I hope he does it.

Great, Terry. Thanks for this info. Now we need to get the *exact* dates of the U.S. Open when they won it.

Sigel's first Open win was 1975, and Corey's only win was 2001.

We're getting closer to finding a result to who the youngest player was to win the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship.

I did purchase some National Billiards News periodicals from 1975 to 1985, and I'll pore through and see if I can get an exact date for the Open that year in '75.

I know the first U.S. Open tournaments were held in Barry's pool room which was located in a different place in Norfolk than Q-Masters is today.

Here's a pretty cool link of all U.S. Open champs. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide a whole lot of detail as far as dates. :(

They say that behind everyman there is a women.Looks like that his fire is brought back by his new love who is nealy half his age.A young female pro player.I am not mentioning the name here eventhough it is well known in certain circles.

There is definitely a ring of truth to that. I remember Ralf Souquet making it to the finals matches quite often after he got married. :grin-loving:

A lady pro player half his age? Hmm, I guess it won't be long until we find out who that may be. A picture, of course, would be worth a thousand words. :grin-square:

I can think of a couple of lady pros who might enjoy Sigel's company. One thing for sure, I'll bet their game improves, hanging around him.

Wikipedia shows Mike born in 1952 in Rochester, NY. That doesn't make it true, of course.

Wow! The article was created in 2006 by the leader of the CueSports category on Wikipedia. He is a stickler for details, this guy. He *adopted* me when I first started contributing to the CueSports category, which was great because the Wiki rules was extremely confusing and hard to understand, not to mention the different punctuation styles from English and American as they pertain to the quotation marks inside or outside the period. I could go on, but this is definitely the topic for another thread and not on AzBilliards either. :grin-square:

The IPT website shows Sigel's bio as his birthday is July 11, 1953. I think I will change the Wikipedia article as I believe the IPT website would have the correct birthday, the same one Terry provided. Thanks for that catch! :)

Louisiana Pool Rooms 24/7 and all the easy money you can stand.

Hey Joey............Maybe there's still hope for us old guys!

By the way thanks to you, Buffalo, and everybody at Buffalos Billiards in Metarie, Louisiana for all your hospitality i received when I visited a couple weeks back. It was well worth the side-trip south on my way to Fort Worth. I wish I'd had more time.

My only complaint was that the beer was too cheap and I drank a little too much! hahaha

See you in October in Lafayette.

Bob

You're welcome Bob. I promise to bring more money to the pool hall next time even if I have to break two CD's.

I told you these Louisiana pool rooms are the nuts. Anyone pool player can make a living just moving from one Louisiana pool room to another.

It's so easy in Louisiana, the only problem a traveling pool player has is to deal with is the demon of guilt.

Don't forget about the October 23-24th Bar Table Tournament of the DECADE in Lafayette, LA at White Diamonds Billiards. You could finance a decade of traveling between Florida and Texas with one win.

Best Regards,

I was wondering how he got the nickname "Captain Hook". Here's what I found out from About.com:
"Hall Of Fame legend Mike Sigel ("Captain Hook") earned his moniker hooking opponents with lock safes though his offense is stellar also. Early in his phenomenal 9-ball career (most tournament wins in the 1980's and 90's) the Captain would break and run a game or two before playing defense so clamping, so vicious, his opponent would wish they made a living at ping-pong or darts instead of pool."
Wish some of these events would be televised.

23 games in a row with NO LOSSES.

Can you believe it?

This has to be a record.

Mike has an unusual way he stands right before he pulls the trigger. Inside of sideways, it's as if he's facing the table with both legs equally apart left to right.

I've been watching this match and mike is hitting them really well. But, i would also say that this guy he's playing may be a good player but at the moment he couldn't get out of a wet paper bag. Maybe the pressure of the camera's.

Maybe i'm wrong...the guy's keeps getting bad rolls...I think it's probably the Pool Gods shining down on Sigel.:grin-square:

I didn't see Joey's thread when I started mine. Sigel was interviewed by upstate Al and said he is playing in the world 14.1 championships and the U S Open this year.

It is great to see him back in competition. There haven't been many with a high gear as big as Sigel's.

They also said 29 games in a row is a record for the Seminole tour.

In the match last night vs Wilkie I can only remember one time that Wilkie had a shot at a ball. Sigel was either running out or locking him up with brutal safeties, after which he ran out.
