Why do people get a pool table at home anyway?

Except that none of the reasons you state have anything to do with why people buy home tables. They DON'T want to take the family out and spend money. It's for the home and for the family. They have no desire to improve their game or enter tournaments or mix with "pool-types" and they probably buy their decal-encrusted pool cues at the local sporting goods shop.

Think of the home table as a huge dart board for the family den. It is something for the family to do when they're not watching their favorite TV program, which is why the whole "billiard industry is growing" rationale is misleading, because it has nothing to do with the game you play.

Here's another question for you. Do you think people pay me $1,000 to $1,500 dollars to change the cushions, extend the rails, and tighten the pockets on their "HOME" pool tables....so they can have tighter folds in their underwear when they fold them in the corner pockets?

I took the time to read some of your other posts too, and I must say...you are really a negative person as you really don't have much to contribute about anything here on AZ....except gloom and doom....do you?

I'm just curious as to what it's like to wake up every morning and wonder how bad of a day it's going to be today...as you must wonder everyday.

Isn't part of the idea of going to a pool room to meet and enjoy the company of others?

Does any here have gotten a pool table and actually started playing less? Its like wanting to buy something for a long time and once you have it...........

Does anyone here actually been able to improve their game after getting a table at home?

I am a very inconsistent player. I could go into a tournament and take down the best player and lose to a chump next #@$%#%^. I was just hoping that being able to practice regularly would help in that department. But like most people, I actually have to work! And the table is a huge investment for me.

personally I dont like most pool rooms, Perhaps 20% of them are ok. I live in Vegas and dont like any of the rooms here, I did like Cuetopia 20 years ago. If I lived around the corner from a handful of pool rooms i been to over the years, then I might not have a box but I dont so I do have a box.

my table at home gets lots of play and there is action here almost everyday, its been small action the past few months, there has been big action here many times too, its not awalys me.

And as far improving is concerned what diFference is there practicing on a table at home or at a pool room?

Thanks for all the comments and for sharing your experience!

I have got the table. It is a nice Brunswick. I would love to have gotten an old Brunswick Centennial, you know the one with the chrome or aluminum all round it? What a beautiful table that is.

The table is due to be delivered. I live in an apartment and i realize that it is going to be installed right smack in the middle of it. That is after an over haul of the apartment. But it is either that or getting another house. Either way it is going to cost a small fortune for me.

I like to play alone. I like even more to match up with someone equal or better then me.

Pool table is easy to get but hard to get rid of. It takes up a lot of space and makes a lot of noise.

I hope it will not be like the treadmill. After a couple of weeks of enthusiastic usage, it is now collecting dust in the corner. At least this i can move to the corner.

I still have an option though. Just store it in the store room and not set it up.

I had a table at home for over 8 years, and can honestly say that I played the living crap outta that table! And yes, it did help me to improve my game...especially my break. I go out to play when I require the competitive aspect of the game with strangers and friends. At home it is to work on trouble areas and to fine tune other areas.

I would love to have a own table again- unfortuneatley no chance here in the rooms we re living in :(
But if my knee-problems will be gone hopefully next year- i ll have an eye open to rent a small room or so in the near (room prices are here are sick and terrible high). I like to play solo also very much-but greater interests for me are, to be able to give lessons there and make some small vids.
Would be really great- so i keep dreamin a bit^^

Doom and Gloom?! Send him over to NPR.

I've loved the game for 50 years, when pool rooms were pool rooms. Now, primarily because they are forced to exist with a bar, pool rooms (at least where I'm from) are nothing more than meccas for kids with dollar bills who can't help themselves from putting their money into jukeboxes that blare loud obnoxious noise and profanity that some animals confuse with music.

That's why I have a table at home.

Table at home is only good if you want the following:

Table and lighting how you like it
Save $12 an hour plus gas
No handshaking
Able to hit 1 or 100 balls any time of day
Wife or girlfriend not yelling
No chance of a hustler showing up and taking your money
work on shots/game without people asking you to play or what you are doing
video yourself and not feel like a tool
Slim chance the wife or girlfriend would like to try out the table (NPR)
Improve your game
Want to claim you are the best on your street champion!
Quick get away if 5th one down wont stop.

MC,
I bought my table about 7 years ago. Once I got serious about pool, I practice at least a half hour a day - I'm pretty sure I haven't missed a day when I was home in at least 4 years. The wife does not care for the frequency of my practice; I hope you don't have the same issue.

If you really want to get good, it only takes time if you are willing to devote it.

I worked in a few pool rooms, and played in EVERY room in my area for 20 years. The big shame is they are mostly gone now, and there are no rooms within 1/2 hour of me worth going to....SOOOO....I put a 9 footer in my basement, and I easily picked up 3 balls in speed....at least.

I play every day, and I watch a ton of video and work on the shots I like from the video.....mostly 1 pocket....and mostly Efren....with some Scott Frost sprinkled in there too :)

Y'all some anti-social Mo_he_fu_ke_s , you know that ?!?
28 responses to this question , and not one person mentions that it's good entertainment when friends come over !
(Fatboy came close , saying that his has seen a lot of "action" , but friends and "action" games are two distinctly different things ! Fatboys still OK . . . .)
Does any y'all even have a friend , or does ya just beat up on this keyboard all day ?
Tap a can a draft , invite some friends over , and play some pool . Maybe even shake their unwashed hand after they come back in from P'ing on the tree in the backyard - it's what friends do !

most of the other answers were pretty valid , too . . .

I was fortunate enough to win the table I have set up in my basement. It was one of the prizes I received in the 1987 New England Nine-ball Championship. The table was made by A.E. Schmidt. It is 22years old and still plays well.

Did I mention it also serves as a laundry table.

I like having it because I give lessons in my home. My students come here to learn instead of trying to teach in a crowed pool room.

I also use it to practice for big events. I'm thirty minutes from the closest room and having the table downstairs is convenient.

Here are but a few reasons why I love my table..

I've had a home table for the better part of the past 20 years.. I bought my table for many reasons and get great benefit out of it.. Here are just a few reasons why I love having a 9' Diamond Pro in my home..

  • I can practice any time I want without paying table time..
  • My table plays better than nearly any table anywhere close to me..
  • I don't have to deal with the smoke, drunks..
  • I have several friends that play very good and we can spar at my home without the hassle of being interrupted by music on a jukebox that I don't want to hear anyway
  • Did I mention I can practice any time I want to without distraction
  • I am home with my wife and son
  • It gives me a chance to work on any and every part of my game
  • I can wake up at any time in the middle of the night to try a shot that pops in my head, and this does happen.. Call me OCD, I don't mind
  • I love the game and having a table has had a great benefit on my game
  • Drills, drills, drill..
  • I've paid for it over and over again and it's still in excellent condition..
  • I can get private instruction in my home.. Thanks Scott Lee for visiting a few years back
  • I could go on and on but those are just a few benefits of having a table at my home..
  • By the way, laundry has never been folded on my table!!

Hmmmm....well, your answer makes me wonder about the 100's and 100's of Diamond pool tables I've delivered to customers all over this country, as not one of them was bought for folding cloths on:rolleyes:

Glen

That laundry shit is worse than questioning whether having a table at home is good or not!! Or maybe it is the other way around:confused:.

And I agree- beating>meeting.:o

having a table at home is quite huge advantage

- if you want serious drills then a table at home will do
- fine tuning your stroke/pocketing
- you can also video yourself at home and see for yourself how you behave on the table, like stance, strokes, follow thru..etc...
- constant practice at home will intensify your muscle memory on routine shots

there's a lot of things you can do at home to elevate your game.

But make no mistake, playing at home is quite different on actual tourney or outside game.

Great post and I agree with you on everything. I have a table at my home and when I first got it I played on it all the time. I rarely play on it with anyone now and I primarily use it to get in stroke and sharpen my ball pocketing before I go out to play. I've used my table to learn a new aiming system and work on shots that gave me trouble and being able to do this at home was a big advantage.

Going to the Pool Room is a chance to compete.

Having a Pool table at home is actually a real luxury & an enjoyment.

Practicing anywhere might possibly lower your inconsistency & being able to practice on impulse at home is great.

Good Luck,,,

I had a table at home when I was a kid and played a lot. When I was in the Air Force, I practically had a home table in the recreation center right across the street from my dorm (no charge for playing). I played a lot then too. Unfortunately, I didn't know how to practice either time. If I had a table at home now, I could see myself getting in about 15 quality hours per week instead of the 3-4 hours I play now. I have no doubt that the technical side of my game would skyrocket. As soon as it's feasible, I'll have a home table again.

Pool table is easy to get but hard to get rid of. It takes up a lot of space and makes a lot of noise.

I know it's a little off subject, but in your case....check into getting a girlfriend or wife to go along with that pool table as well. Now I gotta warn you though, they're a little like that pool table....they are very HARD to git rid of, they TALK an awful lot, always want something to eat, like their sleep, and sometimes can make a lot of noise too....hehe...but they could play pool with you...as well as doing other things you like to do...you DO like doing other things besides playing pool don't you?
