Why do people get a pool table at home anyway?

Aw man what are you talking about?

I don't have a table at home but I wake up in the middle of the night wishing I had one. My game would be so much better. I could practice all I want or bring my buddies over and play some sets or ring game with ol' dirty blues music with a room temperature how I like it.
 
I've had a home table for four years now. On any day that I'm home, I will get some practice in on it. I'd estimate that I play/practice probably 12 hours a week on it. At $9.00/hour table time (at my local poolhall), I have saved myself a HUGE amount of money by having my own table. Let me see, four years= 208 weeks, 208 (weeks) x 12 (hours per week)=2,496 hours, 2,496 (hours)x 9 (dollars/hour)= $22,464 I've saved by owning my own table. It has basically paid for itself FIVE times over!!!

Then.....there are the other advantages that have been mentioned (from posts such as MOJOE's).

I can tell you this; I am no world-beater, but my game wouldn't be near what it is if I would have never bought myself a home table. The amount of practice time that I have spent on it has been a real plus in elevating my playing ability.

And for ridinda9, YES, I have my pool friends come over and play on occasion. I will also add that almost anytime ANY company comes over, poolplayers or just family members, we end up playing pool while we visit with one another.

But, the best and most advantageous thing about owning my own table is......it has gotten me up off of the recliner, away from the TV, and up onto my feet and moving around more. I am in the next week or two, going to cancel my satellite TV subscription as I don't spend enough time watching the television as I used to (there's another $83/month I'm gonna save!).

Oh yeah, and fwiw, I still shoot in 3 leagues and an ocassional tournament, so it's not like I don't get out and spend time in the poolhalls/bars with my friends.

My table is in the middle of my shop and I play on it all the time. I also depend on it for research and development . It is a valuable asset to your game and great for those times when you need some space and do what you do.
 
There's a lot to be said for when you get up at 3am to go pee and then wander down to the rec room and hit a few racks in your underwear. :wink:

Every time I tried to do that at the pool hall they called the police. :grin:

Loved the peeing on the tree comment, rings soo close to home, well my last home.

I've been playing for about 5 yrs now. I purchased my 7' diamond pro/am from the 09 SBE and put it in a garage (14x24) built for the pool table. It was played on every day in that garage, and every time I had to pick up a short cue because the room was 12" too narrow it was a bitter disappointment in my poor planning. The fact that my friends went out back to pee was of no concern, but my wife didn't like it much because we lived right in the middle of town and the neighbors are close by.

We moved into our new home at the beginning of this past august. My main criteria for our new home was a pool room big enough for the table that was in the house. My wife wanted a bit of land separation between us and our neighbors, and a ranch house so we wouldn't have to deal with stairs later in life. We got it all and it was a happy day when Ed and Jason came and put the table in the new pool room.

My friends haven't been coming by as much as they did in the garage days. I live about 15 minutes outside town and am still settling in to the new digs. I'm also still contending with the aftermath of the fire at the old house, the repairs, insurance claims and getting it into marketable condition again.

The table isused every day and the cool thing about it is that my son has really gotten into the game and my wife can play too. She doesn't think she's good enough to shoot out in public.

It has been the best money I have spent. I only wish I did it sooner.

Not everyone has room for either a Gold Crown or a Diamond at home. So, if they're city dwellers like me, we have to bring our laundry to poolhalls and fold there.

Ever since I got myself flip-fold board, in near tournament blue, so I don't go out as much. With proper Set Pause Freeze technique, my folded clothes come out as sharp as on a GC or a Diamond.

Really Good investment

Before I got my home table I would travel 40 miles one way just because this one place had cheap table time ($3.00 per hour) on Gandy Big "G's". I was trying to get better at the game without prying eyes peaking my progress. I finally bought my own Gandy and put it in the garage and it is the best thing that could have happened to me. I do a lot of testing and trying different theories that I come up with and I don't have to drive 40 miles one way just to see the results. I think the wife loves the idea as she knows where I am all the time. I come home and I play pool. I eat and I play pool. I cut the grass and I play pool. I run the kids around to their little functions and I come back and play pool. I play with the dog and I play pool. The money that I have saved has more than paid for the table and my game is a lot better and has come along faster than most people that do not have home tables.

-having a beer or 4, and no worries about DUI (seperate from the kids) :rolleyes:

up some time)
-watch TV or live stream while you play
-don't have to listen to sh...tty music
-it's the best stress reducer that I know!!!!!
-I love my table

Ditto. When your choices are playing at a bar full of drunk, noisy kids, or at a "Family Fun Center" full of half-drunk mothers with noisy kids, the home table is the only way to go, as far as I'm concerned. I don't consider these places pool halls, and won't go near them.

Plus, when having a party, it is just that much more fun for your friends and family. The guys, and sometimes the ladies, almost always wind up downstairs shooting pool. No boring parties, and even if the ladies don't play, they get a kick out of laughing at their husbands misfortunes at the table.

Can't really think of a reason NOT to have a table at home. If you have the money and the space for it, almost silly not to... lot cheaper than a swimming pool.....
 
I want a table and am about to buy one. I think it will allow me to focus more on my mental game. Just to be alone with a table for the first time ever would be nice. I mean I have played in a few places for a night before. But I never woke up everyday, and had a coffee then start to play pool. I think that I could double my skill level in one year, if I had a table.

I know everyone says they get burnt out. I am more worried about dying from dehydration. I don't think I would stop shooting 14.1 pool alone until I hit 500. I could train myself like I trained in the Army. That is why I would get a table.
 
Other reasons to have a table.

You can have your pool and AZB at the same time.

Buy a Diamond 1pc slate table and you have a REALLY FIRM place to sleep if you have a bad back!
 
At home tables are great.....I had one from 16 years of age until I was about 30.....miss that old table every day.....not only is it good for practice, but great for parties and also perfect for a long practice match-up with a good friend....you can play until 4am, stay at home, sip some Crown, and just enjoy the game....no worries about having to drive, or paying for time.....

Hoping to have a new table soon, and as soon as it's set up, I'll think of a few more positives :grin:

Only reason I want to play out is for league and tournaments so I can see all my buddies...
 
Getting a quality table at home was the best thing I ever did. I can practice any time I want. The pool table area seals off from the sleeping rooms - the perfect set-up for practice.

I would not like to own a home without a pool table.
