A friend of mine who has sold more scruggs cue's then he can count happened to be in Baltimore and decided to drive by his shop. There's a for rent sign on his building.. He also found out that his equipment is being sold to another fine cue maker who I won't name here. It's a sad day...One of the best will never make a cue again. I finely got my dream cue and would have loved to go down and a picture taken with him and my cue to hang in my pool room. My wife asked her if it's going to help the value of mine... I told her I don't care... If anyone wants my Scruggs they'll have to dig up my grave and rip it out of hands :)

This is definitely a sad news. Tim is one of the finest cue maker and this is not the news anyone would be pleased to hear.

I thank god that I am able to own a TS. I will treasure it!

Another master takes his hands off the lathe. I have few regrets in life and selling my Scruggs is one of them. What I have left is a Scruggs sneaky that will never be sold.

Godspeed Mike Cochran and best in life to you Timmy. Andy and I were talking about our visit to your shop and how it sparked so many cue makers to come to our booth looking to sell us their cues when they found out we (Andy) had bought 20 of the 30 cues you had prepared for the show.

Thank you for all the great cues you built.

Now you have more time to tend to your forest.

Best,

John Barton

I used to enjoy going to the Scruggs' shop way in the woods, up the winding road. It was fun. Timmy Scruggs made it fun. In fact, he used to sponsor a regional tour in our area, trying to give back to the industry. He is a good man.

Congrats to an excellent career, and may he enjoy life to the fullest now in retirement.

Check out his website: TimScruggs.com

What a cool pool collage Mike has on there. I recognize quite a few faces here. :)

Wait. What's that noise?

Oh, that's the sound of the Scruggs' cue value going up, up, up!

Apparently the loss of Mike was the end for Tim Scruggs cuemaking.

What a magnificent mark he put on our sport with his cuemaking skills. I hope he can ride off into the sunset with lots of pride over what he accomplished. But I know it's bittersweet.

I am honored to have four of his cues, IMO, a perfect mix. A true sneaky mint w/2 shafts, a pointless bacote with ivory hoppe ring and black linen wrap (my player), a gorgeous 4 pointer with ivory and abalone inlays, and a fancy 4 pointer with ivory and gold-lipped pearl inlays. I had never heard of gold-lipped pearl before getting this cue. When you look straight at it, it looks like pearl but as you roll the cue they turn a deep gold color. Very interesting stuff.

There was a young military azb member who was looking for a TS sneaky a month or so ago and I offered him mine which he enthusiastically agreed to buy. Then a week or so later he politely emailed me to say he couldn't swing it. Boy was I relieved! Yes, I was having bigtime second thoughts over selling my TS sneaky but was prepared to follow through.

Good luck to Tim in his retirement and thank you for all of the fine instruments you produced.

Best,
Brian kc

Someone in the cue business ought to contact Tim to do some consulting.
Who knows all that Tim knows,What a wonderful person as well'

There was a time in 2002 that I got to use my husband's Tim Scruggs cue and was attached right away!

We went to this tournament they had monthly in Orlando, FL and somehow at 8 and 1/2 months pregnant, I made it to the finals of the 1-loss side. Richie was out, so was Grossman, Broumpton, and some different English guy named Richard I played and beat 7-1.

Finally, had to play Tony Crosby to see who would play Charlie Williams in the finals. I won the lag and broke and ran 3 (on the 9 footers), sadly I lost hill/hill, in fact he's so nice about telling that story and it was just 1 game away from a different outcome! It was amazing the way that cue and I were one, not a fancy Scruggs, just a sneaky, but it was like that one cue that you have a special bond with that you look for your whole pool career!

Went on to have the baby 2 weeks later, no pool for 4 more weeks straight for a total of 6 weeks and not one ball hit. I went on to win the Monday night Stroker's (in Palm Harbor, FL) tournament 3 weeks in a row with about 25 guys in them each week! Didn't even hit a ball between Monday's!

So that's just a few fond memories of that Scrugg's that Richie took with him to the Derby City Classic in 2003 and sadly, someone had stolen his case in the blink of an eye with that beautiful cue in it never to be seen again :(

Hand's down it was the best cue I have ever used in almost 20 years of pool! Thanks for the memories and enjoy retirement!

I love that pool story with the Scruggs cue. Thanks for sharing. :)

Sorry, though, it got stolen. I have heard so many people say they had their cues stolen at the DCC. When the players get engrossed in the pool playing, they set their cues and cases down for one second, and some scallywag or scoundrel seems to be waiting in the wings to steal whatever they can get their hands on when the owner is looking the other way. To this day, I never leave a case or a cue idle at any tournament. I've heard so many horror stories just like this. :(

Anyway, thanks for the great read this morning.

Sorry to hear about Tim retiring. I have had a sneaky for years 15 plus and really like it, it is my normal player as I keep my Schick put up.

Good luck Mr Scruggs

Ah I know that cue. Your friend must be my friend as well. Hits pretty sweet, eh?

Tim's cues were always the epitome of collectable in my book. Sad to see him go. But, I'm glad I picked up my monster and a sneaky before things potentially get out of hand with pricing.

i let a friend borrow my old TS SP. said friend lied about where he would be using it, and subsequently let me know it was stolen while at a bar tournament. after a few choice words i let him know, the saddest part about it was most likely the ******* whom took it probaly had no idea what he/she had just "inhertired" and exactly how nice of a player it was. even worse the said ******* probaly never even hit a ball with it, and if so probaly couldnt understand the workmanship behind the tool....

Anyhow back to the topic at hand. God Bless TS! Best of luck in all future excursions :)

If you have a Scruggs and it needs to be refinished, would the value be affected if the cue were refinished by someone other than the original cue builder?
Sorry if this is a little off topic,I didn't want to start a whole new thread.

It's always preferred to have the original cuemaker refinish their cues, however, there are certainly plenty of capable people who can step in and refinish a cue to a very high standard.

man, that is sad news ...

i still remember sitting in the middle of the room doing vodka shots with mike and tony ( Black Boar ) ... then playing on his pool table ...

Mikes death was just the start,Tim's wifes death was the last straw.2 great friends for over 30 years & love them both.

So sad

Unfortunately I had to sell my TS to pay for absolute necessities. The cue had such a wonderful feel to it that it upset me having to sell it. Maybe some day I will see it for sale and be able to pick it up again.

Me too pal.

Tim and Mike were there for me for over thirty years to take care of all of my cue needs and to answer all of my dumb questions. God bless both men.

Tim Scruggs is a legend. I am happy to have a few of his cues and would like to someday have a Cochran. Too bad his cuemaking days are over.
