Hello! Wondering if someone can help... I have been shooting pretty well but my cue ball control is still not where I think it should be. Can someone tell me some drills I can do that might help?
Thanks in advance!
Heather

Set up a simple cut shot (mark it so you can repeat the same shot over and over). Now put a piece of chalk somewhere on the table and work on having the cue ball hit the chalk. When you can do it consistently, move the chalk.

Repeat.

Get some of the 3 ring paper reinforcemtns and mark out a certain number of balls start with 3. then take ball in hand for the first shot, before you shoot the first shot call the entire rack ball and pocket. When you can easily do 3 balls add another to the mix. Keep the balls off the rails and at least 6 inches apart to start with. You can add blocker balls and clusters to break for more difficulty if you need it. Try running them in order to practice 9 and 10 ball. Work up to 8 balls and then add in blocker balls for 8 ball and pattern development. You can repeat the pattern over and over because you've marked the table with the paper reinforcements. If you make notes of where the reinforcements are in a playing journal you can set the patterns up over and over again.

Let me know if it works for you. I have enjoyed some success with this method.

We always need good speed control drills to improve our position play....SPF=randyg

...and Mother Drill 5 is the most effective one ever invented, imo! It kills everything else out there, because it teaches the student how to learn to "feel" the cue (to let the weight of the cue + perfect timing, create the speed of the stroke), and then simply train a muscle movement, that is already accurate and repeatable. We teach 10 different stroke speeds, using the exact same template. All you add is your sense of timing, and apply some disciplined practice. Pretty soon it's like riding a bike! Pool really is all about touch/feel, but we use all of our senses...especially sight and sound. What a great drill!

Drills

One of my favs, and its easy, at first then gets tough. Arrange all 15 balls in center of table, big circle, all balls clear to go. Take cue ball in hand and start shooting balls anywhere you like. Never take the cue to a rail. First 10 balls are easy for most folks, then position gets tougher. You are moving the cue in small places. Secret is to start throwing balls with english so you stay close to center of table.

"throwing balls with English" I would like to see that....SPF=randyg

Heather: Cue ball control starts with cue stick control....SPF=randyg

2 I like are the balls in a circle drill, yes, throwing with English helps. Randy, am I missing something there?

I also like putting balls at every diamond in intersection on one end of the table. It helps with the angle off 1 rail skill which is key.

For general runout practice, I'm working on a game for myself like throw out 5 - 10 spaced balls. Miss your leave, add 1, miss shot, add 1-2, etc.

The key is not so much using drills with a name, the key is keeping dated notes on performance, in practice and under pressure. Then build drills or find drills to work on one missing skill for an hour or so. You must also right down something you did well everytime, so you can reflect on your skill strengths. My rules: min, 1 positive note everytime. Max 3 negatives. List your goal and roughly document your practices. This is basic coaching. Since we are relative amateurs, be sure to document what other higher skilled players say about you also, but ask yourself, really, could that be true?

Looking for a good way to develop my cb off 2 rails position prediction...Any ideas?

Everything you want to control comes down to what you do with your stick. There are only 3 things to control on every shot...Angle, Speed, and Spin. Learn to manage these three things, and then apply them to whatever situation you are facing. That includes going two rails for position.

Learn to cover your A.S.S. on every shot and you will KNOW what needs to be done.

It all comes down to you, a piece of wood, and some plastic balls.

If you want a drill, here's one. Set up a shot (mark it so you can set up the exact same shot again and again) Now practice shooting the shot and using the things you can control, pick different places on the table where you want the cue ball to end up. Learn what it takes to get the cue ball to go where you want it to go.

...
The farther the cue ball is from the object ball, the less useful "cutting with throw" becomes for controlling the cue ball. I think it is far less useful than some authors let on. Below is a test to see how far apart the balls can be and still get some useful movement (or lack of movement) on the cue ball. The goal is to get both balls to move to the left, or at least not have the cue ball move to the right. A more severe test is to require the object ball to be pocketed.

I think Bob Jewett just explained it. mr.wiggles sounded like every ball will be effected by cue ball spin as a norm. That's far from the truth.

In order to throw an object ball the conditions have to be narn near perfect.

Thanks...SPF=randyg

Bob Jewett said, "There are many articles about position play drills" here.

Thanks Bob. Lots of great reading. I had to make a special place in my favorites for this link. Looks like much study time in my future.
