Not talking about the LD shafts, but the regular / traditional shafts. Which production cue company makes the best quality regular shafts today??

i guess i'll throw some out there.....

for production I'd say Mezz. Though most of their shafts are technology/LD, they still have a regular hard maple shaft. They use very good wood, straight tight grain. No shaft under 4oz that I've seen.

I think the Tiger X Ultra hits pretty good too. I don't consider this shaft to be LD, though initially it was sort of marketed as one. The newer Tiger ones are LD though.

never tried a schon, but i hear they are also top of the line for a production.

Mezz makes regular shafts, but they have very unique joints that might just suit for their butts only.

their newer tech shafts they do make in standard joints now. i've never seen the regular maple mezz shafts available for other joints, probably just not enough demand.

I have a McDermott cue with a standard production shaft. It's over 10 years old and as straight as it was when it was made. I don't know whether McDermott makes the best shaft out there but I will say that if they're not, then they're mighty close.

mezz, for quality production shafts, hands down! i just picked up one of their regular maple shafts (PUJ) and it's the best productin shaft i've ever seen. 12" pro taper but still really stiff! if my good camera hadn't just broke i'd take some pictures to show you. i might try later tonight anyway

10 years ago mcdermott would have made the list but these days not so much

So if I'm looking for a lower deflection shaft than normal shaft, yet don't want to sacrifice the "feel" am I correct to go with a Mezz or Tiger shaft? I've played the 314 and really don't like the feel.

It also depends on what joint size you're looking for. Schon makes a phenominal shaft, great quality, always great wood. Nice, flat (stiff) hit, tight pores, great ferrel. Only challenge is that the pilot on the joint extends a bit and doesn't fit all 5/16 x 14 joints (i.e. Joss, etc.). A Joss shaft will fit a Schon, but not the other way around (I have a Joss shaft as my third/back up for my Schon, fits/hits great; my Schon shafts won't seat all the way into my Joss cue, just too tight.).

Unless you're buying a shaft from a company that specializes in third party shafts (like OB, Predator, and others), you have to be careful with buying a piloted joint shaft.

What's in my (Instroke) Case?
Playing Cue: Schon STL17
Jump/Break: McDermott Stinger NGO1

Other Cues Owned:Joss J15 (stolen)
Joss J6 (was a break cue for 15 years)
McDermott D-9
McDermott D-23
McDermott D-6
GEM (Gary Medlin) Szambotti Tribute

My opinion of best taditional shafts by a living cue maker would be Barry Szamboti.

Trouble is, you won't get a shaft from him unless it is for one of his cues, his Dad's cues or a Balabushka.

But, they are great shafts!

I've recently been playing with a Tiger x pro shaft and believe the hit and feel to be comparable to shafts made by top cuemakers. Whether using english or center ball it hits very solid... plus the very low deflection is an added benefit, IMO.

My vote would be Schon. Great quality can order from many outlets with many tip choices. Just open the box an put it on. Great hit never had one warp.

Who makes the Best regular shaft?

The "hit" of shafts is subjective, a shaft can "feel" like a hard hit for some and not for others. The performance of a given shaft is what IS important! I think by now, (based on how many PRO players us the Low Deflection Shafts), it is a given...Low Deflection shafts WORKS ! There are a limited amount of different L.D. shafts available from shaft makers. My preference has been and still is the OB shaft. I used the OB-1 (12.75mm tip) since it came out, but switched to the OB Classic (again 12.75mm tip) when it came out. The difference in the two is the Classic does NOT have the foam core running through the shaft. The lack of that core, makes the "hit" much stiffer and the feedback felt more on the grip hand. It "hits" more like a Schon shaft than a Meucci shaft (perhaps a poor example).
I personally feel that the Classic shaft (being stiffer) hits straighter (I make more long shots hit hard) and it still has the low deflection characteristics. I.M.H.O.

the only LD shaft I'd ever recommend is the Dominiak D2. Great feel...my two players both have that shaft...and IMHO no other cue plays as sweet.
