I don't know about you....

...but when I see cues made by people with less experience selling (being listed) for more than cues made by people with dozens of years more experience and cues modified by someone no one has ever heard of selling for more than they were new makes me think Obama has made everything right in the world and we should say special prayers this Thanksgiving!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone had to say it....

JV (----no there is nothing for sale here, except souls... :grin-devilish::grin-devilish:

A lot of us have been thinking the same thing, but I don't think the cues you allude to are actually selling. Also surprising is how angry such sellers get when you offer them something reasonable - they should just move their listings to the cue gallery.

Hold onto your wood, boys.

How long someone builds a cue has no bearing on anything

If they built a bad cue for 10 years they probably still do. Technology is not the equalizer and neither is experience. Experience doing something right is what makes the great cue builders.
There may be a fresh face out there that can out build 85% of the world.
Then again maybe not so much.
Nick :)

As you're saying all things being equal, they may not be lesser in quality, however even Hyundai started with the Excel and the Excels price. If I am going to spend Mercedes money than I am getting the Mercedes.

JV (----just an opinion

BUT WHAT IF YUGO DID BODY WORK ON THE HYUNDAI? WOULD THAT MAKE IT A MERCEDES?

I'M SURPRISED THIS HASN'T BEEN BOUNCED, MAYBE BECAUSE IT'S A GOOD POINT.

(I JUST GOT YOUR MESSAGE FOR SOME REASON, SO I WAS A BIT LATE TO THE PARTY)

HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Marcus

I think I've had 3 different people email me the link to that thread (amongst others), and they all had eerily similar titles like "LOL!!" and "Hahahahaha"......

You're obviously not alone in your thoughts, Joe.

So... your saying you would like to "over" pay for the same quality!!!! More power to you sir! :) Enjoy your money and I'll enjoy more of mine!! :)

On the flip side

I have a cue that was initially sold as a Balabushka but then determined to be A Rambow that Balabushka switched the pin and made three shafts for. I am very happy with my Frankenstein cue!!!

That's not what I said, but if that's your take on it, then so be it.

JV (--- The excel was Hyundai's initial offering at xx price.. now they offer cars at xxxx price some years later. (See the correlation now?)

Don't get me wrong. I am all for free enterprise. But there are things that defy common logic and maybe common logic has no place in cues.

Good luck to all.... if they sell, that means the market is coming back or.. a crap load of buyers just got off a small green bus, either way we all win.

JV (---please send Corky my way when you're finished with him

I know I have been e-mailed or called multiple times also.

Nothing against Richard or anyone else, but who decides who is in the "master craftsman" club/category?

Scott

can someone please tell me what sale you are referring to? I have one that I wonder about. I guess you don´t want to do it public but if you can pm me I would appreciate it.

Cheers

When a Cue Maker offers his work close to it's relative value people take notice and are usually of the mind to try the cue. If it offers more than expected then they will relate their satisfaction publicly and there is room for increase in prices.

When a Cue Maker convinces himself his work is as good as anything out there and prices his work on the same level as most all but the uber-elite, he better make sure he is right. Because the level of scrutiny goes up a thousandfold, and if his has miscalculated his quality of work he will never get another chance at that lofty level he seeks.

You can price your work how you see fit, but if the cue does not meet the standards of cues that are solidly ensconced in that realm you only hurt yourself.

Little things, like figure in the forearm not matching the figure in the butt inlays, will kill you because everyone will realize you don't have the understanding of balance and uniformity. Offering a cue with a simple flaw like that as a perfectly crafted cue will be the end of you for the many who seek perfection wherever it abounds.

Good question...

Nothing against Richard or anyone else, but who decides who is in the "master craftsman" club/category?

Scott

Had cues from Doc Frye. the best hitting of any. George Balabushka cues, 3 over the years, hit like baseball bats, solid like a stock Hoppe. Rambo cues I had reworked by Doc Frye, longer shafts, ivory ferrels, etc. I had a Walnut Martin, Played beautifully, sold to a Japanese collector, player. I know good work and my word is good.

A lot us here are qualified to rate workmanship, design and materials. So without actually examining the cue in question how do you accurately rate it? By off the cuff insults and innuendo? Not really.

Well known makers have the background of local players using and asking for what works for them. Go to poolrooms around NYC, NJ and
meet a lot of good cue makers. The good ones are known all over.

Richard is very good and needs no defense from me but I don't like innuendo from grouches.
I got some red rep and banned for 2 years from classiccues so I expect this nonsense.

Well said

Scott, I'm glad you asked that question. Actually, it's me who gets to decide. I have the list, but I'm keeping it to myself. But I will let you know that three of the cuemakers you've chosen made the cut.

The same guys that have a lot of "master craftsman" cues for sale,

very similiar to the same guys that put all those goofy numbers in
all the bluebook of pool cues.

Have to agree with that. The title of the OP's thread should be "I don't know about you....but I want everyone to know that I know better than you"
