Richie:

I think you might be referring to Corey Deuel's 11-0 whitewash of Mika Immonen in the finals of the 2001 U.S. Open. It was the only Finals whitewash/bagel/goose-egg handed out in U.S. Open history. I don't believe the event involving Tommy Kennedy you're referring to was the U.S. Open, or if it were, you perhaps might be getting the names mixed up?

Sorry guys, looks like iam wrong again, well it sounded good anyway!

Tommy did much much more than win the u.s.open,he did something that can never be beaten only equal,in the finals of the u.s.open he beat johnny archer either 11to0 or 13to0,this will never be beaten!

The finals were a race to 9 in 1992. Tommy won 9-1.

Tommy came to my booth in 1992 and asked if I would sponsor him. I told him I was too small of a company to sponsor a pro and he walked around and got the L shaped table people to sponsor him. They ran a full page ad at the US Open that simply said, "Good Luck Tommy".
When he won the US Open later that year magazines ran stories about a little known or Unknown player winning the US Open. All of us down South got a kick out of that. He was certainly not unknown in the South East. He was certainly not unknown to his finals opponent Johnny Archer. Tommy just could not afford to travel where he could not drive in one day. So he was a top 5 or 6 player for the South East USA at the time and had been for years before. I think that would have put him in the top 20 in the USA at the time had he played the pro tour all the time.
I would guess he is still in the top 10 for the South East. If he hit all the top paying tournaments today I think he would still be top 20 at the end of the year.

let me tell you

Tommy Kennedy is one of the true gentlemen in the sport.

I really can't think of anyone that I have more reaspect for than Tommy Kennedy.

He's just a nice guy that can beat anyone on any table on any given day.

If you don't think so......just watch him play.

No, he doesn't carry a Justis but he use to.

I don't hold it against him though.

He moved up to Indiana for awhile and was a pleasure to be around.

Also, a great Christian man.

Blackjack David Sapolis is one of TK's best friends. I hope he chimes in here to further enlighten.

Tommy has always been a monster. He's a great player, a great husband, a great father, and a great friend. People make comments about how he's just a regional player, blah blah blah. The guy won a US Open, and beat 4 hall of famers one after another to do it. Tommy puts God and his family first, not pool. IMO, that's admirable.

In 1992, Tommy had a great week in Chesapeake. He started out against (IIRC Cavin Coker) - he almost lost that first match hill-hill, with Coker breaking. From there, he went on to be Fusco, Rempe, Lebron (not a good week for Pennsylvanians, sorry Terry), Bustamante, Hall, Archer, and then Archer again. This was back when it was a race to 13, not 11.

In the hotseat match, Johnny tossed in the towel as TK got ready to pocket match ball. Johnny then had to face the winner of Jose Parica/Buddy Hall. Johnny got Parica. I thought Jose was going to win that match against Archer, but he missed an off angle 8 in the corner, and Johnny got a second life and put Jose away.

If Jose would have beaten Archer, it would have been the shortest US Open Final in history.

:p

Johnny took the first game of the final, and Tommy rattled off to a quick lead and jumped up 7-1. Johnny had a chance to win another game, but missed a shot that he would normally make. According to Johnny, he said, "It wouldn't have made much of a difference anyhow - Tommy was playing great."

To many of us, Tommy was not an unknown back then. He didn't just pop out of nowhere. He had been around for a while. He was dominating the Florida tour - everyone knew he was capable of winning, including Johnny (who I might add, was the reigning 9 ball world champion). Tommy double dipped Johnny Archer in his PRIME.

Tommy has won several Regional tournaments since then, in fact winning 6 in row last year. The regional tours in Florida aren't cake walks, in fact the brackets are filled with world class players. Those tours provide the best competition, and attract the best players, and TK is ALWAYS in the hunt - he plays as strong as anybody, and he's 45 years old. You couldn't ask for a nicer, more entertaining player to be in your pool room, than Tommy Kennedy.

As Terry said, Tommy is one of my best friends. He is one of those people I can call anytime to talk about anything. If I needed anything, he'd be the first person I would call, regardless of whether he could solve the problem or not. Sometimes you just have to hear what you need to hear from those that are able to make you hear it. Friends like that are few and far between in the world of pool.

Tommy is only one of the nicest guys in the entire pool universe, and a damn good player to boot. When you can compete with, and often win, against the best players in the world for two decades, then I think you can safely say that person is a championship level player. I wish I could have played Tommy's speed for a minute, let alone a lifetime!

After he won the finals of the winners side bracket in the US open, he was waiting to play the finals .During that waiting period he came to Q Masters.I asked him to play me race to 9 for 1000$.He said with a big smile " I am a christian and I don`t gamble".

By the way,Kelly oyama won WPBA event once and Julie Kelly won the world championships once. Before or after those wins those two pros were no where near the crown in the pro events. It is the same situation with Tommy Kennedy. The only differece was Tommy had been showing his power in Florida tour championships prior to winning US open.

I first met Tommy in a tournament in Dothan Al. in 1991 . I played him along with some other guys 9 ball on a snooker table. We were taking turns playing the winner . TK was the one running out . Strong .

Last night I was talking to Tom Potter and knowing he is a good friend of Tommy Kennedy I mentioned this thread. Mr. Potter is not a member of AZB and asked me if I would post his reply to this thread, of course I agreed.

Steve

Steve, can you copy & paste the following in for me as I despise pool forums like AzBilliards and have better things to do with my time than sit around in front of a computer with my thumb up my a$$ yapping on them.

Ok... from me < Tom Potter> Years ago when the original Florida tour was in full swing, Tommy told me he used to have a standing bet that he'd give the 3 out to anyone when he was gambling. For anyone to call Tommy Kennedy "average" is just effing stupid and another example of AzBilliards forum armchair quarterbacking at its finest. Sorry for being gruff, hearing sh!t like that pisses me off. To those of you who have praised Tommy in the past and present, thank you and I'll let him know when I next see or talk to him.

Contrary to what some of you folks may think, he has done well against mainstream pros. Johnny Archer has said he nearly gave up playing pool after that loss in the 1992 US Open final that Tommy handed to him. Tommy just got through winning 5 Poison Tour events in a row... That's Tony Crosby's tour. Beating a player the caliber of Earl Strickland is no easy task, but Tommy has done so, most recently in the 2010 US Open. He told me afterwards that winning that match was better than winning the event itself. Can any of you AzBilliards forum armchair quarterbacks say that? Somehow, I highly doubt it.

I have been privileged to have Tommy Kennedy as one of my closest friends for over 20 years and to have worked with him on his tour for the past 8+ years. Oddly enough, we've never drawn each other in a tournament. However, we do enjoy playing against each other when our schedules permit. Tommy is one of the best ambassadors for the game, right down to the bad jokes he loves to tell. He puts on a great exhibition and is also a great teacher, often going well over the lesson's time limit to make sure the student has the information correct.

Tom Potter

PS: I don't want to be accused of being anonymous. I know that's what many of you armchair quarterbacks love doing on these pool forums when you talk your sh!t about whoever. If you have a problem with my opinion about the AzBilliards forum, I invite you to personally come see me when I run another one of Tommy's tournaments or happen to be at a Seminole event. I also try to catch the Accu-Stats gameshow (username T_Potter) when I can. Either way, I'm not hard to find if you want to discuss it.

I will close by saying thank you so that you know-it-all's can get back to your nonsense pontificating about pool. Have fun.
