choosing a cue

Hello everyone!

I'm new to this forum but i've already read a lot of threads to make an opinion on the different cues.

I love this game and play very often, maybe above the average comparing to the bar-players. I really want to improve my skills and maybe join a club.
For this reason I start looking for a nice cue for 400 to 500$.

I was thinking of McDermott G503 or M64B. Are they worth the money? What about the built and play quality? Is an upgrade to the i-shaft reasonable?

Alternativly I was considering to buy a Meucci 21st century 21-1

Or, maybe, I should go for a Predator? The shaftes are supposed to be pretty good, but I don't like the looks of the butts.

Are these cues produced in the US?

I would very much appreciate your opinions on this cues and other suggestions.

OK I'll start. Get a Schon and don't look back.
Now I'll go get some pop corn and enjoy the show.:)

Hi Measureman

Thanks for your opinion. Unfortunatly the Schon cues are a bit more expensive then the ones I suggested.

Are Schon cues that much better, so the quality difference is worth couple hundred bucks?

if you have been playing for a while then you know how you like to play ie.. soft spin light touch-hard hitting no english-firm or soft hit blah blah blah.

contact a cue maker tell them what your looking for in a cue and what they can give you in your price range and you might be suprised at what they offer you.

this is what i would do if i was you?

Well, that's the problem :(
I live in a small town, not even in US, so there're no cuemakers I could contact, there's not even a seller in the range of 200 miles.:sorry: This sport is not that popular in here.

That's the reason I posted here. I wanted to have some feedback on the mentioned cue makers and the quality of their products in relation to the prices. Or maybe to hear some alternatives to the cues I suggested.
 
Buy a used Bryan Mordt cue. BCM he makes a fine cues. In your price range you should be able to pick one up..

where are you located? As trent said knowing your game and how you would like to play dictates what you might get. What is your price range? this would help because there are guys here that can assist in showing many cues out there in your range.

he listed a decent price range up top flash 400-500 to bad you dont have that blue mamoth any more.

and if you do hmmmmm..... i take trade ins lol

youll have to swing out soon lots of good tourneys popping up right now.


if you dont like the offer i sent you OP another good option is go to the FS section and say i have X-amount show me what you got!! and you might be suprised.

I'm somewhere in the middle of Germany.

The price range is 400 to 500$. I thought of investing a little more in a good cue so I don't have to buy me a new one in a year or two.

The Mcdermotts that have caught your eye, will be your best choice. Pick the one that you like the looks of better.

Here are some Schons in your price range. There is nothing wrong with the McDermotts you are looking at. I always recommend a Schon when someone asks what to buy.They are a well made cue that will hold their value much better then most production cues. And please don't buy a new Meucci, the quality is very bad. I have a Pechauer cue and the quality is very good(close to a Schon) and they start at about $225 and go up.

Hey Greenspun, If it's possible find a large pool room and ask if they have league pool. If so you should be able to try some of the cues that the folks are playing with. I am always happy to let anyone hit some balls with my Kikel cue just to see if they like it or not.. There is no better way to buy a cue than to hit some balls with it first. BTW Meucci would be the last cue on earth I'd consider..
 
What ever you buy be sure to buy it from an internet site,not the manufacturers site. It will be 20 % off msrp. Here in the land of so called free trade the cue manufacturers have price fixed their cues to be sold at 20 % off the suggested retail price there by stopping any competition among dealers. Isn't free trade great?

Hmmm, and I was wondring why all sites have always the same percentage off the msrp ))
 
If possible, just try out all the different brands in your price range, wether it's a pro shop or some friends cues. This is really about the only way, and keep in mind there is no best cue for everyone. What you like in a cue someone else may not and vice versa. The quality of Mcdermott is fine by the way.

To answer your other questions, No, Predator cues are not made in the USA, Meucci is, but unfortunately the quality is not what they once were. The Mcdemotts and Predators are far more superior as far as quality is concerned.
 
To answer your other question, if you are getting a McDermott with a G-core shaft, I don't think it is worth it to upgrade to an I shaft. They are both LD to some degree and some folks like the G-core even more than the I series.

Personally, to maximize bang for the buck, I'd either get one of the lower end G series cues with the G-core shaft and save a couple hundred ... or put in a few more hundred than what you are looking at and get a nice used custom cue off this site.

After a lot of replies and good advice and suggestions most of the time the OP never lets us know what they finally got.

Acctually, i have the same problem with you in the past... I live in Indonesia, there is no ggod cuemaker here. Pool Shop is very rare ( there is only two pool shop here in Jakarta). The Price is very high.

I decide to buy a custom cue from USA... Price is around 400$, tax around 50$... and Paypal fee or Western Union fee around 50$ too.. So with a 500$ I already get a New Custom Cue. There's a alot of cuemaker here in AZ can make you a nice plain jane for 400$.. Right now, i play with Jeff Olney's cue, his cue is very good, hit firm and solid and have a lot of power. I also have a Cory Barnhart plain jane, he also make some good cue, more Stiff then Olney's. You won't dissapointed with custom cue... Trust me and if you don't like it, that cue will hold much better value then Mcdermot. That's what i learn...
