to playing golf on the very tight 5x10.

I am fairly new to the game. The difficulty, creativity, strategy, wide range of shot making demands, shifting alliances, comaraderie, blame placement tirades, and post game second guessing are some of the reasons that I find myself likeing this game-toooooo much.

Anybody else play? Should I stop now before there is no turning back.

I have neglected practicing and playing the other games recently. If invited to play golf-I do. I am afraid that I am becoming addicted. I can't say no.

I think I need to go back to running with the rotation, 14.1, and 1P crowd before there is no turning back......after a couple more golf games, maybe.

Anybody else a current or recovering golf player out there?

I'm kidding, sort of....this game has struck a chord with me-maybe because it's new to me-maybe because ball pocketing is not the main focus, since the pockets are so tough..

In your home room, is there a golf game going on much of the time?

Take care

PS: Is there a set of standard rules, or every room play a bit differently? How do you play in your room?

Golf is the crack cocaine of pool.

Golf is the crack cocaine of pool. I have been playing for at least 25 years. Nothing else is like it.

The game really is at it's best on a 12 x 6 but then again I'm Canadian. If I have learned anything over the years is that NO TWO PLACES play the same. Everyone has local house rules. Scoring, order, fouls etc are all different and you need to clarify rules before jumping in.

Those who only play golf ruin their stroke. You need to mix it up to keep your ability to make the tough shot. Having said that nothing teaches you how to play multi-rail kicks, masse and goofy shots like golf.

Warning stop now or you will be hooked for life. It's like one pocket to the power of 6.

Awesome game--the only downside is there are so many variations to the rules wherever you decide to play. Getting through that before a game, just to clear things up, is a pain in the ass. Aside from that, a 5x10 table cut for golf on fast cloth is tough game to beat in terms of fun and skill.

They play golf here in Calgary on a 6x12 table with about 11 reds or so as blockers, no pins. It is a great game but it is $0.50 a point and for anyone that does not know, that can get really expensive really fast. It is possibly to lose $100 a game if you shoot bad or get some horrific luck. Just a single shot can cost you alot of cash if there are enough people playing and you don't even have to hit a bad one, just get an unlucky roll or get burnt by another person on the table.

Still, the game is ridiculously fun and IS addicting as hell for anyone that likes the thinking/strategy games like 1-pocket.

thanks guys.

Amazing how many 3-4-5 rail shots come up that are the right shot.

I agree-still have to play the other games though. Or I am doomed to golf dependency.

take care

PS: My main concern was whether there are 'standard' rules, that are locally modified. Sounds like maybe there is no real standard set of rules.

Its been forever since I heard anyone talking about golf. We used to play with pins on all dots and before starting we would smash open a rack of ten reds as blocker balls.
If I could play golf now thats probably all I would play.

Just found a very nice 6 x 12 table in the area and cant wait to make a game on it. Golf or regular snooker play!! I love the game and cant wait to play it again!!!

That being said, I've never seen a 6x12 cut specifically for golf games. I've played on a ocean table with snooker pockets, but those are pretty generous compared to what I've experienced on a dedicated golf table.

At legendary Hardtimes, Bellflower,Ca there is/was legendary "Big Bertha" 6x12golf table. Specifically set up for golf, I think the pockets had about 1/16 inch total ball clearance. I believe HT now has another equally challenging 6x12 for golf too. I never played on 'Big Bertha', only watched the usual suspects play some. It looked like the wrong place to learn. It rolled forever, like the slate was spray painted faded green.

I have seen one AZB member hold his own quite well playing golf at HT.

At HT, they play the holes in the opposite rotation direction from what we play where I play.

Although most players I see play are a bit older, I am seeing more of the young guns play lately. Those young eyes can be an advantage at any game.

Take care

Been playin' golf on 5x10's or 6x12's for almost 40 years. What a great game, especially when playing 5-6 handed! Jack White told me a story about winning $33K playing a guy golf in Burbank, CA, every day, over a period of a month, back in the early 60's. In that time, word got out and tons of other players showed up, trying to steal the game...but the gentleman told them all that he just preferred to play Jack. A great story, it backs up what Jack always taught me about gambling...play for anything (even a quarter a game), let your opponent raise the bet, and NEVER rub it in their face when you win. Seems like those are still good rules to live by.

Continuing the story...the first day they were playing really cheap, and Jack ended up winning $600. The guy only had $300 on him, but swore he would be back the next day, pay up, and play some more. Jack thought, "Well if this is this guys way of stiffin' me, at least I got $300!" Sure enough, the guy showed up the next day, paid up, and played more. They played for more money every day, until, on the last day Jack brought back $13,000 as winnings for the day. Mollie said to him, "Gee, I guess you'd rather stay here than go back on the tour!" Jack responded as he always had, "My word is my bond!" He never missed a gig, even when somebody offered him more money, for a date he had already booked for an exhibition.

WILL,

That table at Shooters is brutal and the rules have changed many times thanks to Bill.
Once you learn the moves the you will be even more addicting.
Trying to play with Bill can be tough, he tells you to do things that he can't even executed and then gets mad when you can't do it.

We played the other might and he was getting on me for playing bad, but I won both games and he sold out to me both times:thumbup:

Anyway if you ever want to hit them around and learn some moves let me know I would be happy to.

We play 4 days a week in beloit wi. at the carom room its a great game for numerous reasons i personally like the ever changing aspects of the game and the money that u can win is good. Happy golfing everyone.

Spanky-

LOL, I had totally forgotten this--I remember an old Kong and Morro playing with 6 other Mexican/Latino players in this sick 8 handed game during one of the Saturday open 9b tournaments there, years ago. I also remember they didn't have the best of it at the time either.... Crazy game. Just crazy.

"Big Bertha" is still there. A friend, John Archibald, went 6 and out one day. There is a plaque on the wall in commemeration. They now have a brand new Riley 6' x 12' they play on and I swear that the pockets look even smaller than on "Big Bertha."

THAT is insane.

Are there signed affidavits from witnesses/other players?much like Mosconi's 526? (j/k) Similar feats.

holy smokes!

thanks for that information-it takes me 5 shots to get one ball 'ready' at the pocket, assuming others leave it alone. That is amazing.

and don't you luv the 9-10 foot bridge and cue for the long shots.

I made 4 balls in a row playing liability on BB in the late 80's, That was best I ever did on that box and thats nothing compaired to golf. I still lost $$.

I awalys wondered when someone would go 6 and out on it, I thought Kim Davenport might do it. I'm glad someone did finally slay the beast and did go 6 and out. hell it only took 20 years. Congrats

OHh, someone should post the rules of Liability--I've seen it played only a handful of times, usually touted by only stronger pocketers with weaker cueballs. Can't believe I totally forgot about this game. Kind of reminded me of 'horse' on a golf table, without anyone explaining to me how it was played
