The terrible choice of whether to play league or not, must decide by next week

I know I shouldn't do it. It's not good for my game. It's largely a waste of money. I'll be obligated to be there at a specific time every week.

But for some reason.......... here I go again!

If you really had to think about whether you wanted to play in a league, then you probably did not. You should probably find a way out of it before you make your life (and even possibly other peoples lives) miserable.

You should only be playing league for social fun and competition.

League is fun. It's not brain surgery. It's not life or death. It's not even about money.

League is a night out with friends, playing some pool.

If you are looking for something more than that....look elsewhere.

I am just wondering how it is not good for your game? I know plenty of VERY good players that play in leagues, and I haven't heard one say their game suffers because of it...

As far as being a waste of money; if your league match is a race, I doubt it costs much more than table time would. ??? If you just hate being told to be here or there at a certain time each week....don't do it. Doesn't seem like such an agonizing decision to me. :sorry::confused:

I agree. Additionally, considering the "what if...?" threads you've been posting lately, PocketPoint (e.g. the one where you mention intentionally filling up a drop pocket with your own category of balls and slamming the cue ball into it, claiming you "made a legal hit into your own category of balls"), I'd be concerned about your health and safety with that line of thinking. ;) :p

Post of the day, so far!

Considering the way you've been trying to impress us all, and the impression you've actually made, they might do better without the chance to learn to "appreciate" you...

Because I'm not a great player, and I need to spend my time at the table working hard to get better.

I have a feeling I could play 20 weeks in a league, and I would not be one bit better by the end of it.

And for what it's worth, never in real life have I tried one of my famous "what if" scenarios. These are just in my imagination, I don't bring them to the table with me.

This must be an epidemic because I know lots of people that say the exact same thing.....almost word for word, seriously. I always find it funny when people try and make excuses for playing league. I tell people if you want to play then play, dont try and play it off like its a huge burden on yourself. All leagues have pros and cons and if one or the other out weigh the other one then its an obvious choice. I hear people say, "we are just playing so we can go to the state tourny one more time" and "we are only playing so we can get an imaginary free trip to Vegas". Both of those explanations are ridiculous because these same people have went to the state tourny "one more time" for the last 5 years and there is no such thing as a "free" trip to Vegas. 99% of the pool players who go to Vegas will come back a little lighter because most suffer from PBRM....poor bankroll management. If people play league the way its suppose to be played it should not harm their game any, but anyone with any sense knows the only way to win is to dump and that will eventually create bad habbits that will carry over into a real game.

If you don't think that you could learn something in twenty weeks in league play then you obviously aren't planning on paying attention to anything or anyone else.

I attempt to learn something every time I am out playing. It may not be much, but I look to improve constantly. It may simply be a thought about a situatuation but I try to take in everything that happens and see if I can learn from it.

I am a 7/8 in APA and am sometimes ther best player in the room - but that does not mean that I can't learn something watching and listening to everyone else.

Tell your team captain you would like to play the best player on the opposing team, and if that doesn't make you bear down a little, at least you could learn something by observing them. When I first played in a league (06), I was stuck in a rut of playing similar speed players. And while I did work on my game outside of "league" night, the level of competition was frustrating me (I want to be pushed). I finally told the captain that I wanted to play opponents at least rated 1 speed higher than me, and more if possible. He said OK, and though the first session I did that my win percentage went down (from hovering around .800 to right around .500), my game improved at a quicker rate. 2 sessions later I was 2 speeds higher, and the win percentage was back where it was when I was rated lower.

I think playing better players is the quickest way to get better....whether it be playing for money (losing cash is a motivator too, lol), entering tourneys, or playing better players in leagues. League is supposed to be a FUN night, but taking things away from it to better your game can also be a focus for you....try thinking of it that way, and play hard, whether it's a "fun" night or not!!

Fellowship is the only reason to play league. Maybe beer if you drink. There are a holes but in my area there are some fine folks also. Hope your talking BCA not APA. That's your choice. I'm sure you know all the ranting with APA so let's not go there. Have fun or don't go!!!

Yeah! What he said!!!!
Any time spent at a pool table can be a learning experience...but only for people with an open mind.

I feel the same way.
I played leagues 3 times , all 3 they wanted me to cheat by sandbagging , or I got the other teams best sandbagger or a sacrificial lamb every week.
It was ridiculous then, and for me it is just as ridiculous now.
If you enjoy it , go have fun I'm happy for you.

League is just about having fun banging balls in. The only negative is showing speed and losing action. If your mark is around, dump for the night !

I disagree about league not being good for your game. I think it's very good for your game. There is NO money to be earned but there is the pressure of playing well to support your teammates, and if you like to show off your skills there are both teams watching. When you pull off one of those miraculous outs it's a great feeling of accomplishment. Just as much as when you screw up and lose it makes you try that much harder the next match. JMO!

Never have been able to understand that opinion. How is one match a week (if you even play that week) bad for your game?

If you're convinced that it's bad for your game then I say don't bother. If you have a bad day at the table you will probably blame being in a league and the people on the team that you would be on don't deserve that ridiculous drama.

I play league on Sundays. By the time league starts I have already been at the table for 4 hours, and typically 5 and a half hours before I even play my match.

If you really hate it that much then you aren't doing you or your (potential) team mates any good.

Why not go one step further and sell your cues, take up curling and drink beer.
