Lori Shampo

Don't bother--us mere mortals couldn't possibly comprehend the intricacies of those shots, let alone execute them to the level of precision that only Neil could do.

A little off topic, but iam sure that Neil didnt mean no harm to Ms.shampo,i think that he was just giving his honest remembering of the way they have played against each other, and by what Neil has said it was not her best performance,i just dont think that he was trying to say she couldnt play, because we all know better then that!REST IN PEACE MS.LORI SHAMPO!

What a loss. It hits home because a friend of mine just OD'd and died last Sunday.

But at least Neil got the chance to tell us all how GREAT he is!!!

Good job Neil.

In about 1980 I played her boyfriend Tommy getting the 8 in 9-ball a few times at Mr. 9 ball on Finkell during a stretch in the summer. $50.00-100.00 sets were a decent bet for working/ laid off guys at that time. A few months passed and Lori came into the rack one morning after I had been there most of the night sweating the action of a now deceased friend of mine Tommy Lazlo. Lori wooffed at me relentlessly (it was funny, everyone around was laughing including Corn) to play her a few sets of 9 ball and so we did. I remember her as being fiercely competitive but not mean spirited. It was about the action and not personal. At that time I could run out a rack of 9 ball if it was within hailing distance of a cosmo (we played push out then, anyone remember?). I look back at that time now and it was great fun--so many places to go play where there was action--bar table, big table, snooker, payball, liability, golf. I had no real clue about Lori having problems with drugs. On a trip back to the hometown, Detroit, I was sorry to hear she had passed on. Anyone remember Madeline Whitlow?

Fine musician.

Madeline was a concert violinist that took up pool and married Alton Baby Face Whitlow. They came to Chicago often and we usually hung out. Madeline was able to temper Baby Face's drinking slightly, but only slightly. Face usually handled the booze professionally, but he was still an alcoholic. But like his pool prowess, he was a champion alcoholic. He administered it to himself in very measured doses, only rarely overdoing it.
Madeline played a decent speed for a woman, but she had zero chance against Lori.

Not getting closer to Lori was one of my life's few regrets. She had everything I looked for in a woman, gorgeous, great body, fun personality, shot good, bet high, woofed good, and was fearless with a big heart.

Like you, I wish I had seen more of her. No question, she was a legendary woman player at that time. When we talked about the top women back then, the conversation started and ended with Jeanie and Lori. Jeanie being the tourney champ and Lori being the best money player. I do know that Lori, being the competitor that she was, woofed loudly at Jean to play outside one tournament arena. She uttered the infamous words, "I'll shoot your ovaries off", and I have to say this shocked Jeanie more than a little. Alas, they never played. Too bad, it would have been memorable.

God, did that sound sexy! That gave me a balsa woodie (best I can do at this advanced age). That may be the greatest woof in the history of pool hustling! Whatta broad!

It sounds like you and I, like 12 Squared and I, were in the same room at the same time on a few occasions and never knew each other 40 years ago. I lived in Ann Arbor (college boy) and came to Detroit all the time. I remember Madeline of course, and Baby Face. Do you remember Palmer Byrd?

Thanks

Kevin

I found this picture of Lori from the tournament results in an old McDermott Masters program:

Beard, sounds like you should have made a move long ago!!!!

I was happily married at the time and I knew if I dabbled in that spot (with Lori) my marriage would probably become history -- as it did anyway when I weakened in another spot a little later on. (I wudda bin better off with Lori)

Here is the spot that I weakened in:

I to would have enjoyed knowing Lori. It seems some of the brightest stars are surrounded by the darkest of backgrounds and that is why we notice them. Unfortunately as happens way to often in life, the brighter the star, the shorter it's life. This might sound a little off, but her life would make for a wonderful book/movie. Tragic for sure, but heartfelt nonetheless.

Shame on us, Beard. All along we thought we had to beat you at banks or one-pocket to bust you!
