The facts about the final.

Let Bygones be bygone

This has spiraled completely out of control !

Let the fact remain that the only one that is to blame in my eyes is Alex P, he has not only made a mochary of himself but has taken down the likes of Bill, Dennis, and all that were involved.and of course us being the spectators. It is him who has to look himself in the mirror everyday !

Bill was in a lose/lose situation, to the best of his ability he did what he could. I praise him for all of his efforts !

I say we move on and chalk it up to experience and lets get back to what we do best, and thats shoot 14.1 and promote the game to the best of our abilities....Which i think we all do very well here !!

Marop it's a shame a player put you in that brutal of a situation, you're right there's nothing you could have done to win there. In retrospect I still don't see what YOU personally could have done that there wouldn't have been scrutiny.

It is indeed a shame that Marop was put in this situation. However, the decision that should have been made was a very easy one. You have a drunk player who's making a spectacle of himself and disgracing the sport. He should have been automatically forfeited. There was no need to ask his opponent or the tv commentator or the fans in the audience what should be done.

In any other sport, a player engaging in this misconduct would have been ejected immediately with possible fines imposed. Pool should do the same.

In another thread, I was reading about Johnny Archer showing up late for his match. According to the rules, players showing up late will be forfeited (although in this case JA wasn't). When rules for the dress code, tardiness and other misconduct are uniformly enforced, the players will change their behavior accordingly.

Bill, hearing all you've heard, post-finals: would you make the same decision again if you were in the same spot?

Lou Figueroa[/QUOTE

I don't think I would have done anything different about the final. I talked with Darren, I talked with Danny D., I talked to Jullian with accu-stats and I made a decision. Darren came out the winner as should be, the crowd was happy and the match was over fairly quickly.

As for knowing what I know now I would have never volunteered to help with this event. This was not the only incident, we had a situation during the last day of qualification upstairs. A lot of players saved some innings to the last minute and we had 5 new players sign up on the last day expecting to take all 12 innings. At midnight we had 11 players on the waiting list. With 2 tables going and players capable of running 50 balls an inning we would have been there all night. I made a decision that who ever is on the tables at 1am would be allowed to complete all the innings they had left. At 1am Johnny Archer and Dan Louie were playing. Johnny was the last to finish at 1:45. My decision did not go over very well with the people still waiting to play.

Hi all,

it s just a shame to read what happened there-and that the problems were forced by a drunken player who acted like a drunken teenager and not likea professional.
I m also a bit suprised that such a tournament haven t had an official there at this time-- i will say it how i see this:
It s nothin else than Alex P. should have been banned from the tournament- to be drunken is nothing else like doping!
Hope the officials will react here and will knee down for thos guys like Marop who re spending their freetime and their good name to offer a great event for the crowd (and usualy also for the professionals).

Bill: Kudos to you-and i am very sorry for you that something like this happened to you while spending your heartblood for YOUR sport-instead of this you were teased by a drunken dummy. In my opinion there is absolutley no excuse for Alex P. and i hope badly that there will be sanctions in the future. And further: Clear rules how to react in such a case.

Alex P should be ashamed- many sponsors ve seen this theatre for sure....and will think twice about it to promote a tournament if Alex P. could be there again......

I don t know if Alex P. has a big sponsor...but if so...i hope they will kick him- and other who were thinkin about to sponsor him will not even think about it anymore in the future.

No Drugs, no alcohol on tournaments!

TYVVVM Bill !

Imo this should have been concluded friday night.

Scheduling has to be very difficult in this event of so many disaplines.

Maybe there should be more people to help out in this phase of the whole thing.

It's not a people thing, it's a scheduling thing. Accu-stats wants to film 4 matches, 2 on Friday and 2 on Saturday. The problem arises when the players that are in the straight pool are also still alive in the 9 ball. When our spots come up to play some of our players are playing one 9 ball match after another. As in this case, Niels was in the semis of the 9 ball and missed the window to get the straight pool match played on time. Both matches had to be postponed to after the tournament was over. No referee, no tournament director, just me and a very tired accu-stats crew. If I cancel, nobody in the arena is happy and if I let him play the internet viewers think it's a disgrace to pool. If Darren had objected in anyway I would have canceled the match but that was not the case.

Anyway, I've learned my lesson. I'll watch the next one on the internet, if there is a next one.

Yep I understand this very well as I help out with the live ppv.
All week it was very difficult to extend info about what is next as the customers ask so many times. This kind of format is a huge nightmare to a live broadcasting crew. Redraws and buy back, you can have them !
It would be much better imo to just make the events double elimination formatted. Much more predictable for TD's to proceed and then your event might have been on at a much better time with more matches being shown in the long run !

Tyvm again for putting out the real story in the thread of yours !

Thanks. We know the buyback system causes havoc with the scheduling but Bob really liked the idea of getting a portion of the 8 man tournament on the TV table. It just hasn't worked out in the last couple of years. It just goes to show you that good straight pool players are also good 9 ball players. Double Elimination would be better for us but that would make the DCC just like any other tournament. I think Greg and the fans like it the way it is.

Yup, the current format is well liked and probably won't change.
Maybe they should have more people to coordinate the many disaplins.
Assigning one to each maybe. Like NFL teams do. They have a head coach and one for all the other aspects of the team.
Just a thought.

Darren Appleton

Just thought I would share what Darren Appleton said on facebook:

"Great job guys shame it went on late the last day but I really enjoy the straight pool and appreciate what you guys do and all the hard work, great guys indeed

My suggestion maybe next year if possible start the qualifiers day earlier then maybe play finals on the Friday ? All in all thanks again :-))"

Darren was a gentleman and he even played along a bit with Alex so as not to rock the boat and to make it work as best it could. As long as the good guys like and continue to participate in the event, it is good.

Peace out! :)

Darren is a class act, through and through - and IMO, one of the best 14.1 players in the world today.

I am with David on this. Don't kill an entire event for the actions of one person. Nobody suggested canceling the NFL season over the actions of Brett Favre or any other NFL player who displays bad behavior on or off the field.

I hear you on this. It seems everyone is ready close shop and go home because of one persons actions. Incredible really, it almost sounds as those wondering if they will have 14.1 next year wish it to not happen. Just the vibe I've been getting from some of the posts.

i think that this is being overblown. unless he whipped it out and started dancing on a table, fergetabout him. the thing that makes 14.1 such a non-spectator sport is that it's about as animated as a nursing home and more sterile than a hospital. sure you gotta have some rules but everyone should lighten up a bit. he couldn't have been as bad as a major league coach.

Favre, what has he done that is so terrible, compared to other players. He is not a dog killer or woman beater. Oh, the e mails, you know if he had stayed with the Jets, they would have never made it to the media. Have you ever sent a dirty joke or racey picture by e mail?

Its very simple. You do what they do in tennis but with points. First un-sportsman like call 15 points.Next one 30 points and final out burst DQ!

I have to agree with PoolSharkAllen's comments.

Those that have worked hard to promote and produce this event have done a wonderful job. This episode is only a growing pain.

Now, is a good time to look back and set into place what would be the necessary plan of action for the next time it does happen. Rules are rules. Once we all start to learn to play by them and gain the courage to enforce them, then tardiness and drunkenness won't be issues.

Alex is a popular player, but his popularity should not be fueled by his public disrespect of the event, all those associated with the event, the loving spectators, the sponsors and himself.

Mistakes are made and they should be forgiven, not forgotten.

Look back at the great Ralph Greenleaf. A true Billiard icon or even hero. But, he was a very sick gentleman who became a menace at tournaments. When, finally, the billiard organizations barred him.

Be very thankful that Darren Appleton is a strong enough individual to become the Champion. If this episode ended with Alex winning, what would we be saying?

Thanks for the tournaments and Bless those that strive to make them happen.

he seems like a nice guy to me. can someone please tell me EXACTLY what he did during the match to draw such ire?

before the match:
Alex was posing on top of the tv table, with his feet on the table.
Someone had to remove the open beer he set on top of the tv table while he was posing on it.
He had to be asked several times to not curse loudly while doing his stand up comedy routine.
He kept yelling at the semi finalists playing to speed their game up
he was very obviously intoxicated.

During the match:
He was very obviously intoxicated.
He constantly spoke to his opponent while his opponent was shooting.
He commented several times about his opponents shots.
None of his antics during the match seemed to bother or diminish the shooting of his opponent.
Mr. Appleton was a gracious gentleman & seemed to enjoy playing alex.

No doubt, alex was very entertaining.
I do however feel that this is probably not what bob jewett would like to have happen during straight pool matches.

And we wonder why pool is having difficulty promoting itself, getting sponsors and tv coverage? Really, the problem starts not with Alex but with the organizers and referrees for permitting this travesty to happen.

If pool really wants to clean up its image, it needs to start at the top not at the bottom.

as far as i could tell everyone was enjoying the match.
It was not your typical 14.1 match, but no one seemed to be offended by alex's behavior during the match.
I would like to know how many of the comments on this thread have been made by people who were actually at the match.
How is this one instance going to hurt the game?
