Tapping the hole for a pin...

can anyone explain how to tap a hole, say in a forearm or shaft, in order to accept a pin.... thanks in advance
 
Isnt this site about learning, not to just give your stick to someone who is more qualified.

My suggestion is getting Chris Hightowers book, it gives detailed instructions on what to do with pictures guiding you. That has helped me learn a lot of what i now know
 
1) Lathe with run out only .0025 or less.

2) Dial indicator with megnetic base.

3) Rimer

4) boaring Bar

First you need a lathe with a tail stock that is zeroed to the chuck.

Next you must chuck up your material that you are going to bore a hole in, and make sure that you have zero run out when the lathe is turning. I use a dial indicator to check the run out before boring a hole that i am going to thread for a pin.

The diameter of the bored hole will depend upon the pin / thread count chosen for the for the shaft or the forearm.

Next I put the chosen Tap that I am going top use in a chuck in my tail stock and thread the hole under lathe power.

Last I install my Pin in the forearm and I again check it for run out using a dial indicator. If we are talking about a shaft I would first install an insert, bore and then Tap the insert for the Pin size I am using.

sounds right

i agree with manwon, except i turn the headstock by hand, and cut the threads just a few turns at a time. then i back the tap out and clean the threads of the tap, then repeat

If the pin is like the one in Kenny's picture you'll have to bore for that guiding shoulder.

Thanks for the info guys, i was just interested in cue construction it fascinates me.... I did a search before I asked but couldn't find anything....

i'm not trying to be a cue maker, nor do i want to be; way to many headaches from the nitty cue dealers for me to deal with. i am just a player wanting to learn how my cues are built.

Which I have no problem with. IMHO there are many sources of information
as a quick excursion into the wonderful world of google will reveal.

My response was more to point out that the main function of this forum
is not to teach cuemaking details.
