The Geezer Thread -- the aches and pains of playing pool

I solved some back and foot problems by switching my playing shoes to Sketchers Shape-ups -- these are amazing products in my book, and alter your body alignment for better posture.

But my latest lament is tightness and then flat-out pain in my shooting shoulder, along with stiffness in the right-side of my neck. Now I've gone to using a penetrating deep-heat products that helps, but doesn't solve the problem entirely. And if any of that stuff gets in your eyes, your out of business for 20 minutes.

Far as I know my mechanics are strictly conventional. I'd say I play like Mika, except I don't, but I feel as though I move around the table and approach my shots in much the fashion as he does.

Any ideas about this shouldler ailment?

Any of you geezers out there with your own issues, this thread's for you.

Try taking a couple of Advil about an hour before your go shoot. Helps keep the soreness away for a couple of hours. Also, after about four hours, take a couple more. Drink plenty of room temp water. You may want to do some light stretching. These thing work for this old and tired body.

I am 71 and still play often in tournaments and gambling. I have rotator cuff problems and have just about given up on 9/10 ball because of the strain the break puts on my shoulder, so I play one pocket.

I get acupuncture two or three times a month and it has done wonders for me. My insurance does not cover it, but it works, so I am happy to pay the $45 whenever I go.

Advil advil advil

ex three sport semi star athlete here and at 42 years old i have more aches and pains from playing sports than most non athletic 60 year olds. i carry a bottle of Advil in my case and take 2 before league night or tournaments. it always worked back in the day and still does today. best stuff ever for muscle pain or body aches.

What did you doc say the problem was, atrophy. Try not working in the yard doing repetitive motions. Take Relefen once in the morning, once at night. Stretching, lots of water, play for higher stakes. Winning the first two games makes pain goes away. My newest problem of many is an aggravated nerve in my foot, causing the ball joint to swell. Cure is a series of shots into my nerve with a solution of alcohol and a pain reliever. The other cure I am trying first is not playing pool. After about a week, I am going stir crazy not being at the puhl room.

It could be related to your neck. Years ago I was in an automobile accident where my neck got twisted, so I go see my chiropractor and he cracks my neck. Then, going down my back/shoulder, he presses hard until I am almost screaming. This pressing gets the lactic acid away from the muscle/tendons. He does the same pressing thing for the neck. Within one day I am all back to normal.

I have backed off with tennis elbow problems, both arms. Breaking kills me. Regular play not so much. So when I practice I play 14.1. It has been several months. Work also hurts badly. I still can't quit this game. My weekly gambling match has been kicking my ass. I wish I was playing right now. Should I seek help? Hi, I am Slickstick, and I have a pool playing problem.

I'm 62 and shot pool last Saturday on my home table for about 7 hours straight. The only medication I need is Bud Light.

Advil is ibuprofen from Pfizer. Generic ibuprofen is much cheaper than Advil; same effects.

I think part of my problem is to many bud lights. I open them all day and then drink them all night. I am not a quiter. I will make it work.

It not so much that I cannot do what I did when I was in my 20s or 30s... it that it takes me a lot longer to recover...

12-15 hour days in the pool room on my feet, is a lot better and quicker to recover if I wear some good shoes.

Eyes are something else.
Energy is something else completely.

Trying to keep awake is difficult after 12 hours in the pool room. Coffee or energy drinks isn't the answer.

You are right. I never felt any of these aches and pains until I stopped drinking the booze. Johnnyt

That's why I had to stop taking it Johnnyt, my stomach got torn up. I switched to generic acetaminophin (Tylenol), and after a few years my doc got worried about toxicity in my liver. Finally had spinal fusion surgery, which helped, but am now taking hydrocodone daily...but not exceeding prescribed dose (15 mg/day) ever. No booze. I've been living with pain for about 20 years now, and as long as I'm on the right side of the dirt, I'm happy!
:p
