Why Say Cheap Action?

I can't trust going out to gamble anymore for health reasons, but when I did, this use to bug the hell out of me. Guy's would put the word out they were at so and so place or coming to town and were looking for cheap action. "Cheap action", don't tell you anything. My cheap action on a BB was $5-$10 a game or $25-$50 for short races of 8 or 9-ball. Fatboys cheap action could be $1000 short sets, and others could be anything in between. Does saying cheap action mean a certain amount of $ in some areas of the country? Johnnyt

so when you say how much-they say "$1000/set" and then you say "Wow- This guy is really big time and so cool"

Cheap action

Cheap action to me is anything < $100 a set.

All the old timers tell me that they played $20 a game. So many now play $20 a set standard games. It just takes too long for anyone to get anywhere, then table time eats up the profits.

Winning and losing $300-$500 a night is fine by me, sort of like when I hit the casino, I have a limit. $100 sets with a 3 set minimum is nice for 9 ball. When players play that way can count on getting your best game out and receiving their best game as well. The odd number of sets ensures that someone will win either $100 or $300 at the end.

I would never use the term "cheap action" to a group that I didn't know. If I am around people I know then they know my normal bankroll / habits. So the term "cheap action", while relative, has to be used in the right atmosphere.

I agree with the OP. That's cheap action around here. It usually amps up once someone gets down a few though so cheap can turn to decent money fairly quickly. Our last hall is closing its doors in June so then I will have to get used to NO action. Actually I'll be losing $30 to the gas pump every trip I take to Chitown to find action. This is gonna suck.

most of the time the people that say
you want to play cheap are the 1s who
think they are hustlers.
i loved it when they would not know me and
ask that.

Why?

So you tell them cheap to you is going to 5 for $750?

Or did you just like taking it to 'em for their $10'/ game?

That would be a bad move to pull on you. There was a guy in Largo or Clearwater,Florida that I tried to hustle that I had no idea who they were and had to donate and pull up. That guy I believe to this day was you and the other that got me was Buddy Hall. With Buddy I had just come down from NY and didn't remember what he looked like. You (if it was you) looked like a pay-day. Johnnyt

PS: Buddy got me in Oldsmar, FL.

So true.

I could envision Jack Cooney walking into a pool room and having some young hustler ask him, "Say mister, wanna play some cheap One-Pocket?" And Jack would reply, "Sure. What did you have in mind? $500 a game?"

JT,

With all do respect, and i really mean that you do have my highest respect. I have to play for $$$, of I fall asleep. The other night I was playing for $5/game. The past 2 nights I been playing 6/5 on the $$$ my $1000/$1200 with me giving up a big spot. I lost $5500 last night :(. I'm going to play the same game again, perhaps for $2000/$2400 I hope.

I play lots of $10/game 1P when i'm playing full time 30/40 hours a week, I havent played much since Oct. As long as I have something bet it gives me a reason to win. I can shoot practice drills alone just fine. There is only one person I play who I dont gamble with, its lessons and were very good friends. He plays much stronger than me. He wont take my $$$, I offered to pay for lessons-he said "No".

This is kind of a personal thing but I'll share it as it causes no harm, I just want to be the best player I can be. Its not about ego or high rolling someone. I like the fact I can play for $$$ and not feel the heat-that took a long time(years) to get there, but I finally did. But now I can play for what ever and the $$$ dosent put a hitch in my stroke. Perhaps $100,000/game 1P might slow me down a bit-I never tested that level before. But I can bet it up and I dont rattle. It took lots of $$$/time to get there, it wasnt natural to me.

Playing for $$$ just gives me a reason to bear down and try to win, and all it takes is $5/game to make that happen-it dont need to be $1000's/game. I do like to bet higher because I get more movitated-but its not a requirement.

I'm not a high roller, I just like action.

one more thing I'm a stone sucker for ring games. I can be the weakest player me and 4 champions and count me in, I love them. I'll donate all day long-I just like ring games.

IMO how much someone bets dosent make them cool. the fact someone will get up and play their hardest and best on their own $$$, even if its $5 is what I respect. The size of the bet dosent matter, I mentioned what I was betting only because of the price of the chalk. If We were talking about Masters chalk I never would have said what I was playing for because it is irrelevant.
