Brunswick rails (new sub-rails)

Thanks Glen, I'm not going to say anything more than (THANK YOU) for all the help pushing the table mechanics in the right direction....if not for you showing your work...well everyone would just try and get paid for the job they do...not turn out great work for the customers.

The right tools, and the knowledge of how tables should play...well put it this way...all the older tables can be fixed up to play better than most new tables....if not all of them.

Glen....this forum has helped introduce me to a lot of other mechanics....which have become very close friends....most importantly...they're great people to have as friends.....even you!

Mark Gregory

I'll post some pictures of this 1945 9ft Anniversary when I'm done rebuilding the rails on it. Who ever worked on this table in the past didn't size the feather strips right...so they pounded them in until they split all 6 rails right through the feather strip dado....bad enough that the rails were stapled out to look like worm wood....nailed the hell out of the ends of the rails....but SPLIT all 6 rails....what the hell:confused:

Glen, are they the rosewood, or the Formica rails?
Show the pics of the crack in the rails.
To answer your question on what cushions I used on the Brunswick rails...artemith cushions.....play great.

Good luck with the rails...not that you need it ;)

They are rosewood rails, pre-figure 8 nut plates.

For anybody in the SE, and especially around Atlanta, Mark Gregory has been doing great table setups and repairs for a long, long time...and he plays pretty damn sporty too! Good to see you have lots of work Mark! Keep it up!

Mark....that's some of the best work rebuilding rails I think I've ever seen buddy:D If more table mechanic's turned out work like this...there wouldn't be ANY old Gold Crowns in this country...and every one of them would play perfect....all the time!!! Great craftsmanship Mark. And for any of you that would ask if Mark is a good table mechanic...I know him personally....the answer is no....because he's a GREAT table mechanic:D

Glen, the "Realkingcobra"!!!

hi glen
i have the new rails on my diamond.
the cloth is old ,to me the new rails play
and bounce to hard like the old rails.
has anyone else had this problem?

Great Work!

Mark,

I've seen and played onrails you've rebuilt...they are monsters! Your attention to detail is spot on. Your one of a very elite group that preforms this level of "major surgery". Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to having you up to our new shop in June.

For those of you that don't know Mark Gregory, he is the real deal when it comes to ANY aspect of pool and billiard table mechanics. I've been working on tables since 1970 and will call Mark for advice and his input often. He has helped many mechanics behind the scenes and continues to be a vital resource for all of us.

Thanks for everything you do.

Jay, thank you...trust me having a mechanic of your ability notice my work, is a true honer. I appreciate all the compliments, but there are a lot of other great mechanic's in this country such as yourself.
Congratulations on the DVD you and Glen made for Simonis cloth.
I hope to make the trip up north this summer....want to see John Burns shop, as well as yours.

Again thanks my friend
best

Jay,
Could not agree with you more. As you know my crew had the pleasure of assembling the 12 sets of rails Mark rebuilt for Syracuse. I personally had the opportunity to work with Mark on the second set of six. Mark has a "must do it better" type attitude on every aspect of his work. He is constantly buying the bigger badder more accurate tool to improve the job. I actually wish for this to stop. It is costly and she may throw me out. The accuracy and repeat performance of the rails from table to table is hard to believe. A feet I believe could not be pulled off buy the table manufacturers. This rail system is awesome.

Some pics of the Brunswick rails I have just finished.
If you are interested in having your rails redone with a completely new sub-rail...pocket size...cushion brand...what ever you want.
I also changed the inserts for the rail and castings.

Thanks Rob, when you start to mess with the wood on the rails....well it takes forever to get right...but, the only way to learn is to dig in to them.:D
Trust me,it's a lot more work then it looks.
You never know what you can do until you try....

Good Luck

for sure that is true.
but they bounce real hard like the old rails.

Bank the cue ball around the table doing a 9 rail bank...does it come up short...or long on the 9th rail? Then bank the cue ball the length of the table and see if it hits 5 rails or comes up short?

for sure that is true.
but they bounce real hard like the old rails.

The only way to know how a table is going to play, is when the cloth gets old....all good players want the cloth broken in for about 6 months.

That's the only way to tell how good the table plays...good players can get the speed of the table down.....but when the balls come off the rails quick...bank sharp....it's hard to play with confidents.

Judging the speed of the rails is the better players advantage...take that way from him....well everyone knows where I'm going with this.

We're getting off track here, I showed pics of rails that are like new now...that some may have thrown out....what cushion you put on the rails are up to you.

Well then, the best thing to do is to keep new 860HR cloth on the table.
That way it will play just like the tables at the tournaments.

Why are you not playing much anymore, your still young and can see great?
There's a lot of young guns out there today...more than sure you can get some action....maybe it's time to learn the old man's game...one pocket.:D
