Not trying to bash anything , just curious how everyone feels about paying to watch this event when in the past it has been free and even last weeks big 10 ball event was free.I guess my feelings are that it should be free and the stream could have sponsors /advertising to cover this. Again I am not trying to say its bad or good that it is a PPV.It is what it is . I did my share of free streams basically to get out meet people and get over a relationship ,any money I tried to make was just to cover my gas, food ,and hotel.

Sponsorships are easier said than done. If a streamer could always get the sponsorships needed and not have to worry about the pains of the PPV process, then they'd do that. If the sponsors are there, it is far easier on the streamer to go that route.

We do have sponsors that help with the cost, but we have jumped to $137,000 in added money this year. We need to be able to help with that as much as possible. All the funds go to that prize money pool.

It has been free in the past because it was not that much money added. To bring these big events we need to take the PPV route.

When the economy is bad, I know it's tough for many people to just get by, but the sport itself is suffering. So I don't mind paying $10 or $20 to watch the event.

Heck, it's cheaper than how much I sometimes lost in pool hall and how much beer I needed to drink at home to get over it.

Yup .. 'cause there are a ton of sponsors/advertisers for pool streaming jumping at this opportunity

all these tournies have local rooms, local pool league operators, local billiard stores, small local eateries, etc.

there is advertising money for EVERYTHING you can think of. Somebody just has to get off their ass and find it.

No Sponsors

Until pool players start showing that they are wiling to dress up their act, no big name sponsors are going to step up. I know people at Apple and I approached them about sponsoring pool events in our local area. The perception of pool is still the back room hustler with smoke filled rooms. If you look at how the players dress and act, then you know why Apple or anyone else does not want to promote players wearing worn out jeans and raggy t-shirts. The cheating and sharking has to stop also. Earl could be a great ambassador to pool when he is on. But when he starts his childish behavior, no sponsors want it. The other problem with men's pool is the outright sexism. In today's world, no sponsor wants to be accused or associated with an organization that promotes sexist attitudes. The Seminole is doing great things especially with the larger payouts. I for one appreciate it. Until pool players themselves start getting together and presenting a better image, no Intel, Goggle, Amazon, Apple is going to sponsor. A good example is some of the avatars on this site. Dehumanizing and degrading is the nicest thing I can say
about some of them. Women are all of your mothers and most of you have wives. Is this how you honor them?
As far as paying for each event. I worked with Lenny for two days doing the one pocket. He makes no money doing it. He tries to make money selling his videos. I suggested some ways for him to make money but he has a full time job so he can put out his stream. It's a lot of work. I left before the finals last night because I was so exhausted. I felt like I had played for twelve hours. If you guys want more streaming, find someone to do what Netflicks does and pay a monthly fee. If there was plenty of streaming going on, I would do it. I could watch one pocket every day if top players were playing. The Internet is the future. It's time we got pool out of the dark ages and into the twenty first century.:wink::thumbup::cool::thumbup:

That is, unfortunately a fact

With almost every pro sport in this country. Sad but true. But Seminole Tour and Ultimate 10 Ball and several others are providing a quality tournament which players are required to behave and dress in a professional manner. Combine that with a quality stream and I for one see a bright future for the orgs. that are producing this product. Yes I feel pretty good about ppv on this level! Free ones are cool to.

What a great deal

I am more than satisfied to be able to pay $15 for two days of quality entertainment.

And, I prefer a quality PPV over a poor free stream.

Why would anyone expect to see a stream for free?

Improvements:
. Recent examples of real time scoring on all tables
. Pro's as commentators when available

because you can watch any other sport for free. a better question is why should pool be any different? don't we all want pool to be more mainstream? it will never be as long as you can only watch matches on ppv.

I paid my $15 dollars for this event, and did not mind doing it (very cheap entertainment for two days). And now that I know that any extra money they make goes to the players, I am glad I did. I was a little disappointed over the matches they chose to stream and would like to see them get a moderator in the chat room. It was monopolized by Bimmer/Sc5. But I did really enjoy listening to Earl S commentate the last match.

Actually you don't. Those things called commercials pretty much pay for those events. And where does the money for those commercials come from? You buying their products. So it might not be as direct as you paying on PayPal, but the link is still there. Nothing is free in this world.

Since you're taking the PPV route, how many people are paying to watch the tournament?

While it's important to provide as much money as possible for the prize money pool, I think it's also important to look at the bigger picture. Without a critical mass of fans watching these tournaments, pool will NEVER go big time which is what we all want to happen. We need to allocate money to marketing and promoting pool better, of which free or low-cost video streaming needs to be a critical component of that.

Wow Matt, I am amazed at your stance on this knowing what it takes to do a live stream. I love it when the streams are free and I think that a lot more people watch and that is good for the sponsors. But when you really think about it if you have a good streamer who has to travel with equipment across the country not everyone can afford to do that for free. Its inexpensive if you are lets say in Tempe, Az and fast lenny is already there and wants to do it for the weekend but what if you want Fast lenny in Detroit? now there is expenses, time off work etc. i don't know how we can EXPECT streams for free unless the streamer is in town already. JMO.

I think it's a win win for everybody, we get a great stream for 15.00 and the streamer makes a little money.

Free streaming vs PPV

This is a good topic.

CSI and TAR have decided that we need to go PPV for the upcoming US Open One Pcket and 10-Ball.

The riviera does not have the technology available to put out the required signal and we have to rent a satellite for 10 days or so.

There goes about $6,000 - add time and equipment and hotel costs ( for lighting etc). We are in over $10,000.

We cannot just eat that. No way to get anything if it is free and we decided to go PPV. But it is free if you stay in the riviera hotel. So that gives an added benefit for the people that support the riviera.

There are two sides to this. Streaming cannot grow if dependent upon free labor and no money for equipment.

BTW - all our 9' table will be available for play all night long.

Live Streamers will try to go the PPV route. You can't blame them for trying. If they can get enough viewers to part with the dough, they can continue streaming events. If they can't get the dough from the viewers then they will have to try the sponsors. If the sponsors don't sell some additional product because of their sponsoring live streams, they will eventually tire of paying too. The viewer is the one who ultimately foots the bill.

While I love a free live stream like the next guy, it seems like the live streamers are between a rock and a hard place.

I'm sorry and I don't like to be a critic, but MORE has to be done to advertise the streams whether they are PPV or FREE. We need more league players to watch these streams. We need new fresh blood watching these streams. We need promoters and commentators to help promote all of these goals.

I believe a database of pool enthusiasts needs to be created and kept up to date and emails and text messages sent to these individuals. I don't care much for the text messages but they are better for the instant messaging side of communication. Send me an email to advertise an upcoming event and what I can expect to see. When a BIG match is getting ready to take place send me a text message and remind me, short and sweet but include the link please.
