As a long-time league operator I've done it out the "passion" for the game as well. Basically, my services free and I get "tipped" at the banquet by some of the players and usually ends up to be $150. Lots of work for little reward. The laundry list from Jerry was sad but true.
However, I have heard of a general rule of thumb that others have used. From the league dues the league operator takes out $1 per player per week. So for your 36-player league that amounts to $36 per night x 22 weeks = $792 for the season. I think that is a really strong payout for the league operator. I would be happy with half that pay but I'm easy
