Heres the deal. My brother is always tinkering with this and that. Well he came up with a truly unique idea for a jump break cue. He has only shown it to me and a couple of really close friends. We all agree. If it was put in to production theres a good chance it would be a hot seller. Our main concern is that as soon as it hits the market it will be copied. So here's the question. What should we do? We thought about contacting one of the big cue makers but were afraid once they see it. It will become their latest and greatest idea. So is there anything a guy can do to keep from getting ripped off ? I've heard patents cost a lot and take a long time to get. So any ideas guys? Thanks

you have to understand that ideas get sold...if you feel your idea is gonna sell hot, than you go with option A...wait for the patent and mass produce it yourself, the down side is you have to invest money into machenry and license and blah blah...OPTION B find a cue company like nick verner for example, and draw up a contract for will not reproduce but you need your patent or patent pending, that way if they violate it you can sue them in the future, however as you know pool player are usually broke....or sell the idea for 500k or a million....anyhow goos luck...also there are lawyer who giv one free consult for situations like these.

If you decide against manufacturing it yourself, and decide to trust a cue company, at least CC the letter you send to the cue company to yourself in a certified return receipt mailing. (mention that you have done this in that same letter.)

Keep the copy of the letter that you get sealed and in the event of an issue, take this sealed letter to court and have it opened there proving the date of your discussing your invention with that company.

Consult advice from a local attorney the attorney will tell you what you need to do to protect the ideal or product after that produce and sale.

You might PM Mike Gulyassay (spelling of his last name might be wrong) he's the person working with Earl and his cue stick needs.

You might consider the future of jump sticks before putting up a lot of money. Rules are moving away from any non leather like tips and more and more tournaments don't allow them. Don't mean to pour water on your fire but a serious look at the proposed market might be in order. Good luck.

at all costs try to avoid the attorney/patent idea. in the usa it takes years to get the number. in the meantime the attorney is soaking more $$$$ from you. the gov patent office almost alwasy automatically turns you down and you have to resubmit (more $$ for the attorney). i spent $200,000 on an electric 2 wheel drive all terrain bike and finally gave up, jusr ran out of cash to continue. try to approach a cue maker and hope for the best......maybe they will be honest. good luck!

Thanks for the advice guys. After reading some of these post it puts a real damper on trying anything with my brother's idea. I guess we will have to get together and hash this out some more.
