Home table subrail work. any tips?

Just wanted to say thanks to Zack and Robin for your input and also the guys who sent PM's. I got the message just didn't like how it was delivered, so I decided not to say how I did the rails. Here's some picts of the final product.

Still a couple areas that need fine tuning, but overall I was happy with the outcome.

Donny,

Great work buddy. I recommend you as "The Man" for any type of service, install or repair work on the west coast. Please post some pictures of the tables you install for my Boston buddy's. They retail for up to $50,000.00. I know you'll do you normal A+ work.

I'm not worried about, I'm sure he was just having a bad day, I talked to him a bunch times and he's always been cool. Some people think I'm showing off by posting pictures, when actually I'm trying to get jobs. I don't spend a dime on advertising, I use this site for exposure. thanks for your support.

If your not a mechanic, why would it up set you on what I have to say to Donnie? Don't take jobs and then ask for tips on how to do the job.
If that is your cause to put me down...be a man and put my quote above your come backs about me.
Yes, I know who I am....and I was not out of line with my post...I don't put anyone down on this forum....nor did I put Donnie down....Just told him to pick up the phone and ask one of us for help.

Donnie called me a JURK....for that he can't ever get help from me...so now why don't you stick to youtube....or are you the hater?

I'm not a hater, i just think it's absurd for people to be snobs just because they can properly cover a pool table. As i've said, it's not exactly rocket science. Pool enthusiasts come on here and ask for help so they can recover their own table, and they're givin the cold shoulder because you and others somehow think it's taking your job. That's complete and udder b.s. I suppose you think me changing my own oil in my car, or doing maintenance/repairs myself is stealing someones job too? God forbid i cut my own grass then, huh? Personally i think if someones handy, they will do a better job on their own table than most "pro-mechanics". I said most, not all. If you're too ignorant to realize that a person will take more care and pride in doing their own table than some hack they find in the phonebook will, i guess there's no getting thru to you. You pros should encourage anyone that is even willing to take on such a project, not belittle them. Acting like a jerkish snob will lose you more bus. in the long run, than helping people out. Believe that sh!t;)

First off, I know I'm wasting my time with you.....who said anything about recovering a pool table? Did you not read the post...or are you that ignorant ?
I didn't knock Donnie or anyone...and as far as cutting grass or changing oil...are you serious...that's apples and oranges compared to pool table work...but then again..reading your posts you wouldn't know the 5 ball from and orange anyway.

I have no problem giving info out to people on how to do it yourself...I do that almost everyday...along with helping people and not charging them...so don't bark at me about being a bad guy...believe me I do more for people then you can imagine.

I'm far from a snob....you just think your going to put some words out here and someone is going to agree with you...or take your side.
You have no clue what we go through as table mechanics...Donnie's a top notch table mechanic on the west coast...he shouldn't ask for help on an open forum...yes I do agree with him to post pics of before and after.

First off he doesn't need customers thinking he needs help to do any job...the kind of work he ask for tips on...well how many people with their own table would attempt that job?
When I say a hack will try and do the work cheaper on what they see on here...that's for real.
The guy wants to bid a cheap price...get the job, **** it up....now when we give a higher price...the customer thinks he's getting ****** again.

The bottom line is this..no one is going to take work from a good table mechanic..just under bid for the job. We're on here trying to educate the customers on the difference between a good job and a hack job...along with some basic helpful tips on their home tables for free.

I don't care if the home owner wants to recover his own table...good for him...there's still more work out there than we can get to. What we don't need is showing work on here for the hack's that are always knocking the other good mechanics to land job's because of our price.
Do you think a guy that owns his own table is going to replace the sub-rails...I think not...but the hack gets the idea and will attempt the job just to get some money.
I don't knock anyone on here giving tips on how to recover, level, or fix some problems on their own table.
MY CONCERN WAS ABOUT SUB-RAIL WORK...NOT RECOVERING TABLES....READ BEFORE YOU BARK.
HERE'S SOMETHING SNOBY FOR YOU....YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU READ ON HERE..GO READ A BOOK ON POOL TABLES...THEN MAYBE YOU'LL KNOW A LITTLE SOMETHING IN WHICH YOUR TALKING ABOUT.

MARK GREGORY

I was'nt talking specifically about you, or sub rails either. So, i apologize if you think i was. Just seems to me that everytime someone posts asking for help or tips, they get more negative reply's than positive, helpful ones. Kinda like don't be a idiot, call a pro. As far as apples to oranges go, working on my wife's lil svt focus is way harder at times than recovering a table. At least to me it is........:sorry:

Difference is, you're not on a mechanic forums asking guys that work on cars for a living asking them HOW to work on your wifes car. You'd likely get the same results. Actually most of them charge you to solicit an answer.

Do you call up the local lawn care company and ask how to do it before you cut your grass?

It's just a bad analogy. Call up any pool table mech in the phone book and tell him you're going to recover your table yourself, but you want him to tell you step by step how to do it. That's a fair analogy. Do you think the response is going to be much better? I'll go ahead and save you some time.... CLICK!

Look, the information we share on here is our livelyhood. It's how we and our kids eat. It's a tough economy out there, and who are you to blame us for protecting ourselves from every jackass out there doing the work themselves that we get paid to do?

Most of us already have to compete with the guys you're referring to. Yeah, you could probably do just as good a job yourself as I'd say 2/3 of the guys in the phone book. But those are the guys I have to explain every day why I will or won't match his price. You think I want any more of those out there?

I don't mind helping people out. I think most of the top guys on here don't either. However, I do get offended when someone expects me to explain step by step how to do my job for free, and I don't care who you were specifically aiming your rant at, you were talking to them, me, and several other well-respected members of this forum.

Eh, whatever.....There are several cheap, and or free vids and such around. Hell, there's even an ad for simonis's on the top of my screen right now, so you just keep being cute, protecting your "secrets", lol. BTW ,have you seen the diamond guy on youtube? Good stuff. All we need is a good rails vid to go with it, and you should'nt be bothered with questions much after that:thumbup:

Those Simonis videos are made by Glen. You should buy them, I think he even has one that does rail recovering. Good Stuff

Being married, I usually love when her side of the conversation starts with "whatever". Usually means I'm right. :D

Yeah, I've seen the video. That's Mike, who works at the Diamond factory. He's a great guy, and one of those that is VERY helpful. ;)

Information is out there, and some people are willing to do the leg work to search and sift through, or invest in some instructional DVD's to learn to do the work, or attend seminars, etc. You know, everyone starts somewhere and has to learn along the way.

I just personally don't like when someone posts on here and wants everything spelled out in detail step by step so they can avoid paying the very people (in a general sense) they are asking for help!

Now some people want to do it as a project and a learning experience just to try it. I respect that, but those are usually the ones who are willing to search and research and try and sometimes fail. Most of them aren't looking for step by step spelled out instructions....they are in it for the challenge and are ok with running into obstacles along the way. And honestly, most of them come back and say they are glad they tried it, but will never do it themselves again.

Let me ask you this way, not to attack you, but because I'm honestly curious about your perspective... What do you do for a living, and if you were in the same boat in your job, would you explain step by step to someone else how to do your job?

Almost every table i do the customer(s) watch. And when i'm done the two things i hear the most are." I had no idea there was that much involved (and) i was watching so i could do it next time but not any more".

Almost every table i do the customer(s) watch. And when i'm done the two things i hear the most are." I had no idea there was that much involved (and) i was watching so i could do it next time but not any more".

Same here. And honestly, I have had a couple people call and ask if I could explain how to do it themselves. I told them I would have to charge them at LEAST what I would just to do it. The reason: it's going to take just as much time, if not more, to explain to you how to do it RIGHT. If it's not done right, you're going to expect me to make it right, and any mechanic knows it's almost always more work to fix bad work than to do it right the first time. Chances are you don't have all the tools to do the job right. And finally because if I'm involved, there's a chance my name and reputation will be associated with the work, and I won't do that if I don't have control over the quality of work being done.
