Need Pre-Shot Routine For Getting out of car

I have to come up with a pre-shot routine for getting out of the car. I’ve locked the keys in my car twice in about a month. First time was in my driveway. This time I was over a mile from home. I can’t hear on a cell phone, so don’t have one. I can’t hear the bell in the car warning me to take my key out, so I walked home (not a good idea at 70 and poor health in Florida) to get the second set of keys. I took a cab back. Between the times it took to walk home, the 30-minute rest after I got home, and waiting for the cab, an hour and a half had gone by. When I opened the car door I realized the car had been running all that time. I can’t hear the engine either. I think it’s time for hide a key. Johnnyt

I use the remote fob to lock my Mustang...maybe get a car with this feature? This means when I lock & alarm the car, I'm always outside the car.

I keep a spare key in my wallet. Its a plain key with no chip it just opens the door but cant start the car with it.

I have a Mustang. Whats an FOB? Johnnyt

The remote used to control the door locks, the trunk, the alarm, etc. Hooks to the key with a split ring...called a "fob" here. Maybe that's a regional term?

I had to come up with a way to stop my daughter from locking the keys in the car when she first learned to drive. Here's the regime she came up with:

As soon as the ignition is switched off, she pulls the key out and sticks her index finger through the key ring and wraps her hand around the keys, keeping the bundle in her palm.

After getting out of the car, she closes the door and then activates the locking mechanism. She then puts the keys in her purse.

It's a little like creating the habit of always putting on your seatbelt.

Good luck!

A FOB is a small electronic hand held device that sends an IR signal to your power door locks to either lock them or unlock them.

Most higher end cars are sold with them.

Using one eliminates having to put a key inside your door lock to unlock it.

Yes I have one, but it's on the key ring that was locked in the car.

Or get a spare key card like AAA gives out for free for members. It's just a credit card that has a cutout of your keys. Just to open doors and won't work on the ignition.

All you got to do now is not forget your wallet inside your car!

That's cool. I think wife has AAA, I have AARP and Gieco. Johnnyt

Sorry, I know this doesn't belong on this forum. I just thought I'd give a few of you a laugh as I am laughing now that it's over. But you all have been very helpful with your ideas...thank you. Johnnyt

I like this idea. Do like they do in golf, when you lift you head during your swing...tie one end to the keys, the other to your winky . You'll know right away if your keys are still in the car when you get out. Just don't forget to disconnect from your winky when you put the keys in your pocket...those indecent exposure fines can be hefty...and at you age, they might tack on an additional charge...assault with a dead weapon ;).

Hope you're still in a jolly kinda mood...Ken
