New joss cues opinions

please. any input would be appreciated.

I will say this without reservation, you will never deal with nicer people than Debbie, Steven and Dan Janes. They have been in business for 40 years and still going strong. How many people in the billiard industry can top that?

Their cues aren't bad either.

Joss Cues

I have known Dan Janes and have been buying his cues since 1971. In my opinion his new cues hit great. They are very well priced and Dan, his wife and his son are all class acts. I would never hesitate to buy a Joss...old or new!!!

I bought a new Joss for $600 from a dealer and 3 months later the butt warped so it jumped up and down 1/2" when you rolled it on a table. I sent it to Joss and they said for $195. they would make another butt just like it. I asked about warranty and Dan James himself told me "The warranty ends when you hit the first ball." Yea, some cue alright.

Dann Janes is the best in business

I've played with the same Joss cue since the early 1980s and still play with it. About 7 or 8 years ago I beat a guy out of about 5 or 6 Joss cues that all had very slight problems. I sent them all to Mr. Janes he fixed them all and didn't charge me a quarter. If that doesn't keep him on the top of my list forever, I don't know what could.....

When I bought my Lucasi I tried a Joss and found that the shaft was not round but slightly oval. And it was a brand new cue. I guess they missed looking at that one before it left the factory. But all in all they have had a pretty good reputation thru the years. But still with so many cue company's offering a warranty for warping maybe there are safer buys out there.

there is a reason why he is a hof builder.

i called mr. janes about building a semi-custom. i told him right off the bat that i was only looking for a relatively plain, four point player and pretty much knew what i wanted. he didn't care that i was not interested in breaking the bank, the man spent 45 minutes talking to me about the finer points of cue construction and materials.

i don't think that you can go wrong with a joss. quite frankly, i can't believe his layered tips haven't generated more attention.

this happy customer ended up with: ebony butt and points, real black lizard wrap, 13.375 mm shafts with 12" taper, ivory ferrules, and he even signed it.

The only production cue companies that give a lifetime warranty for a cue against warpage are the companies that replacement cost is cheap if you catch my drift. ;)
As for the poster who said his cue warped 1/2"...... I doubt that measurement, thats a huge movement. IMO if the wood did move that much, there was something that caused it that had nothing to due with the manufacturing process ie cold and damp storage then hot dry storage.
Joss has good quality control of their materials. They have their process down pat after 40+ years making cues. Good cues, how they feel or hit is up to what you like.

I do. It happened to me. 1994. The butt did jump up and down 1/2" at the joint. It was stored in my locker at the poolroom, not the trunk of a car. The dealer was from Baltimore and all he sold was Joss Cues. He said to contact Joss directly. I sold the cue for $300 and they were very much aware of the severe warp. The hit was still fine. As someone pasted the warranty, note is says "at our discretion." I told Danny James I would gladly badmouth his cues and I have and will continue to do that. I told him this face to face at Turningstone Casino at a Joss Tour event. I have talked many people out of buying a Joss since then.

Wow!!!!! that's pretty bad man. i've known a lot of people with joss cues and never heard of a warp that bad happening. i'd figure he'd want to take care of that.

another thing i've always wondered is their shafts seem to come way too thick, imo. the thing is i can appreciate that they do it to let people customize it to their liking but who is supposed to do the work? and how are their cues going to hit with random people taking the shaft down in different manners. doesn't that mean the cues could hit way different from cue to cue?

Danny is a great guy to buy from,I've known him for about 50 years and I know he would do anything in reason to make you happy. I bought a cues from Danny and he always made sure I was happy. Being a H.O.F. cue maker says it all.

Danny Janes is a stand up guy, first class, and I frankly dont believe this BS story, sorry, gong.

He stands behind his cues, period, end of story. That is the problem with the net, and fourms, one guy can come on and make a totally unproven attack and do great damage to a cue maker. If they tried to answer every attack, they would get nothing done or made. Joss, has its reputation, they dont have to defend anything.

If the story stinks, and does not fly, then its a stinky fish.

You learn in time, on the net, not to believe everything you see posted.

Ya didn't talk Wayne out of it, apparently.

No, Wayne bought a Joss after somebody won the raffle at Turningstone. They hit good. Wayne has a 314/2 on his. The majority on here don't believe Danny James treated me that way, but what do I have to gain by mentioning what happened with my new Joss cue? No warranty is no warranty, no matter how bad the defect. I'll have to start telling people they are a good cue. I'll just call them the American version of a China-made quality cue.

Is the one you're talking about the one your son had or a different one? That's the only one I remember.
I hit a few with Wayne's cue in March. The 314-2 surprised me.
