What's the legality of side bets in pool?

Any body who bets on a pool player, is an idiot who also paid $90 for the perfect aim DVD and owns a piece of $25 kamui chalk.

They will sell their grannies down the river. All they do, is cut you up and dump to bet on somebody else to win, to clean up.

If you seek a sucker bet in Vegas, go play Faro, there you have a better chance of winning, than on a pool player.

Is it generally illegal?
Or can you do make bets @ Casinos?

thanks,
Broken.

Betting from the rail in pool is like gambling on anything else. I suppose the legality of it depends on the law where you are.

If you are talking about making a side bet with someone on a match taking place in a casino, generally all bets must be made with the house to be considered legal. As for sports books making lines on pool matches, I've not seen it. One casino tried that at a tournament they were holding and it didn't work out so good. Don't think the casinos trust the outcome will always be legitimate. ;)

Pool and Matt Braun, burned Vegas, in the first challenge of Champions, where they make book on it and it went on TV, and I see Varner trying to dump and doing the worst dump I ever saw, and right there, I knew the fix was in. The problem was 10 show up, and one guy wins and makes 50 grand, 9 go home broke. When you do that, the 10 got together organized by Sigel, and they all took all the money they had and bet it on the 20 to 1under dog Mike LeBron, who was badly over the hill an had no chance to win that event. They all dumped, and cleaned up. Its a wonder Sigel did not get wacked over that one, when it leaked out, what went down.

After that, Vegas wont go near pool, or betting on it. They know they are all crooked and can not be trusted.

I think that generally two players matching up is considered a "game of skill" and passes the Dominant Factor Test, so gambling amongst the players is legal.

Betting on the outcome of this game of skill (including backing another player) by other parties would be illegal in most situations, based on my understanding.

Side bets in the State of Arizona of are a no no. Two parties playing pool for money can gamble, but Calcuttas, and Side Bets are a NO NO.

Think of the State of Arizona or any other State could figure out a WAY TOO TAX ALL GAMING, it would be legal. JMHO

What are you talking about, I won zillions betting on the side of pool games. Have you ever hung around a pool room? In fact, I think I knew better who would win then the two players did in many cases.

If the bulls began to enforce calcutta betting in pool halls, they would be locking up about a million players. It is so widespread, its a part of all the mini tour events where they auction off each player. The smart player, will tell them not to put them in the auction, then if the joint does gets busted, he wont go to jail. Why allow your self to be a part of illegal activity you get no profit from.

Wow. That's incredible.

Do you think if they changed the pay out, the players would have played on the up and up....or they would try and cheat anyway?

And if I may ask, what's a "Calcutta"?

I've always wondered why you couldn't do a NCAA 64 tournament style bet for big fields like the US Open or something.

Thanks

You simply don't see Calcuttas in California that I know of. I think they are probably real strict here and it's not worth losing your liquor license over.

A Calcutta is a player auction. Every player in the tournament is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Anyone can place bets including spectators. Generally, the player always has the right to purchase one half of what they were actioned off for unless they were the highest bidder of course. The money then goes into a pot just like any other tournament and paid out according to the places the players finished.

The Calcutta my be illegal in Texas, but here around Houston they are done in almost every tourney. That is where the cash is, in the Calcutta. There are a lot of guys I see at tourneys and they never play, just buy players in the Calcutta.

I agree this happens, but one way to avoid this is to bet on folks that are betting with their own cash (I'm not talking about a tourney but a heads up race). Yeah, I know a lot of pool players have backers, but there are quite a few in my area that don't have backers and gamble with their own money. They aren't happy when they lose.

I remember that match and when I saw it I knew a scam was in the making. You could see players missing and the announcers were covering up by saying the pressure is really on these players. They also kept saying how LeBron was the long shot and can't believe how well he is doing. It was just too obvious and anyone with a gambling savvy could clearly figure it out.

Players will also dump on themselves by having a crony make side bets for them against themselves in side bets that are for more than the money on the table. Guaranteed money. Many times both players are in on it.
