ring proportions

I am building a plain jane which will have ringwork at 5 spots.
My question is: Should I change the thickness of the rings at each
spot to be proportionate with the taper? So far I have only installed
the ring at the a joint. Do any of you do this? Should the slots in the ring
also "grow" thicker? I realize that everyone has their own way of doing
things, but I am looking for input. Here is a picture so you can see what I
am talking about.

Yes. You should have three different size sets of rings with about a 25% difference between them. The butt sleeve rings can be equal as can the joint and shaft rings. You might want to vary the thickness as well as the size of the blockwork. I even alter veneer thickness but it's a real pain.

If it has your name on it, it should be your work. Make it look like YOU feel it should look, not how someone else thinks it should look.
 
When a guy takes the time to post a question, I really don't see the point in posting a response that says, do as you please... He's specifically asking for an opinion, and the best you can deliver is "do as you please," really?

IMO, yes, you should size your rings so that the proportions of their detail stay the same the length of the cue. As Paul said though, 3 sizes should do it. Joint rings, A-joint, and butt sleeve.
 
Thank you all for your responses. I think I will try and figure out the thicknesses based on
percentages compared to the diameter at the a-joint. If the diameter at the butt is 120
percent of the diameter at the a-joint, I will adjust the thickness of the ring by that amount
and so on. I already made the billets, so I guess I won't change the thickness of the slots.

I like to make all my rings on the cue the same width and the rings at the joint at 75% of that size.

Don't forget to 'align' them or the cue-police will be all over your case.
Too bad they weren't around to dictate to Gus the value of their wisdom.

Good thing he did as he pleased, KJ.
Sorry, I just don't think artistic input from other makers should be asked.
All cues would look alike .
Why even ask, why not just caliper SW ?

I really like the randomness of the joint rings and the different styles running through.
There is a reason for it being like that as well.
 
Spend some time finding out what looks good to you the rest is insignificant.

I guess I should have phrased it differently. If I had asked for the best way
to make my rings look proportionate, would that have been ok with you, Joey?
Someday, if I ever get the basics down, I hope to be able to express my artistic
vision as effortlessly as some of you guys. Please feel free to either help, or not
help as you see fit.

As you can see, you have two opinions already.
Some say, same size. Some say different sizes.
Let's say you do different sizes as suggested.
What's next ? Joint thickness or buttplate thickness ?
The cue's look then was conceptualized based on others' opinions.
Do you want your cues to have popular/common look ?
Or you do you want them to have some uniqueness ?

Pic attached is mine. It might be ugly and disproportionate to some or many, but I came up with it , somehow someway.
And I don't really care if they say they're disproportionate or ugly.

I'm in total agreement and hope my musings weren't interpreted otherwise.
We should help one another with the mechanics, drilling, tapping, cutting, & etc.
But the design concept and lay-out is up to the builder; solely the builder.
It's his statement and expression. No one else need apply.
I know the OP asked and I'm not going to shoot him down for that. He's looking for input.
Given what I've seen of his work, I think he will come to a place of total control
and confidence in very short order.
Go with your gut and feelings. Define yourself. :rolleyes:

God doesn't line things up (except in special circumstances), man does.
Guess who I think is the more creative.

But it's not up to me, it's up to you. Go with your heart and what you feel.
Again, define yourself. When you can do that, you will have arrived.

They are ugly to some but I don't care. :D
I just want to recognize my own cues across the pool room.
Heck, if we all made it look like SW, nobody would recognize his own cues w/out the sig or label.
