One Pocket Questions

Hello All,

I have been reading this forum for a while now and something strikes me as odd. I very rarely see a thread devoted to one pocket but yet 14.1 even has its own category. Why is this?

The reason for my question is that I recently played for the first time. Needless to say I got my clock cleaned but it was quite a learning experience. Where would a person go to learn more about the game, moves, strategy, etc? I really want to learn about this game.

Mike

Check out the web site: http://www.onepocket.org/ and the books: Shots, Moves, and Strategies, and Winning One Pocket by Eddie Robbins (sp?) both here and on e-bay.

It's a great game with a lot of followers.

There's your answer. I believe these sites have a mutual respect for one another. Instead of making a sub-forum here, everyone is directed over there.

There is some great information there. Check it out. You will learn a lot.

Mike, better stop now - it's addicting!

I think we don't have a separate section for 1P on AZB because of the website mentioned above. It's chalk full of good info and has a great 1P forum.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I just got home from another drubbing, lol. I would just about figure out what my opponent was doing and then he would pull out something new and put me right back in a jam. Man do I have a lot to learn! Thank you to my league operator Les for playing and trying to teach and for being such a gracious winner. Now on to read about this new addiction.

I cut my teeth years ago playing one pocket against some of the legends. It is truly a great game that requires skill and a long time to learn. I was unaware of a site for one pocket and have only returned to playing from a 15 year hiatus. Good luck in your pursuit of the game. The only thing I could add was a great book called Legends of One Pocket from years ago.

Hi Mike,

Very neat post by a 14.1 player; I liked it. Real good that you learned that game first. I knocked $20 off my normal price for ya. Just go to eBay and search for "shots moves strategies". It's an expensive book as instructional books on pool or billiards go but it will not only help ya, you'll actually be able to sell it for a decent profit once I run out of them (if ya keep it in real good condition). BUT THIS BOOK IS DEFINITELY NOT FOR YOU IF YA CAN'T POCKET AND RUN BALLS. The price goes back up if ya don't commit to buying it by 3 pm.

Well I'll be........Mr. Robin.

I'll take this opportunity to thank you putting together 2 fine books. I bought both the SMS and Winning One Pocket books when they were first published. I have probably read W1P 50 times and to this day read a few pages everyday. Between your efforts and Grady's efforts (with his series of tapes-yeah I have the VHS tapes) many years of learning the hard way have been reduced.

Thanks
John

Mike,
Thanks for the opportunity to get out and play some one hole with you, it's such a great game and I really enjoy working to improve your game. It's such a mental game that really takes your mind off all the day to day concerns which is so refreshing (as a league operator, I have alot of day to day concerns - lol). Looking forward to next Tuesday!!!!!

Grady's DVDs are a must if learning one pocket. It's a huge jump start to learning the game. If you're a decent pool player and can control things well, get Power Onepocket by Scott Frost and Lenny. It has amazing info and moves. It's an aggressive way of playing and should possibly play one pocket a while before getting that one. But it is a must.

Play cheap with people, try and figure out why they do what they do. Play percentages. Don't take risky shots.

Wow, all I can say is thank you for dropping by here from time to time. Some of the thoughts that you gave the players a chance to lay out in winning one pocket always stuck with me. It is great to get that little glimpse into their heads.

damn you must be a player?

One pocket is a fabulous game. Seems like more of an action game than anything. Rarely do I see locals just playing to play. My best advice to you about one pocket would be: keep your opponent close to the rail with no shot at all times (or froze to a ball), strategically move balls to your side of the table and NEVER take a flyer! Those basic rules will help you tremendously. Other strategys will also stem from those disciplines. It's hard to stay in stroke with this snail paced game, but it's apart of it. Patience patience patience! If you love a fast paced game like 9ball, don't gamble one pocket.

Mike...Les, aka OnePocketChamp, is a great guy, and a great L.O. I've known him for many years, ever since I gave him a lesson in Billy Wiers old poolroom almost 15 yrs ago. When you see him again please give him my best wishes!

Mr, Eddie Robin a pleasure to hear from you again

Eddie, I have all your books. All of them signed by you at California Billiards in San Jose, Ca. your books are fabulous. I espeacilly like the position play for 3-Cushions. I was thinking of going to the Nationals in Las Vegas hopping to see you and take lessons. Do you give lessons? Please publish your next book. You were always a gentlemen and a true billiard player who meticuosly took notes. It was great to see you play and hear you talk about your stories. Take Care, Barney

The P3C books brought with me to San Jose Nationals in 1978 were first one's received from bindery just two days earlier. Told them that I may wind up in jail if i can't get at least 30 books to San Jose for that tournament and they managed to get just that many ready for me just in time. Believe they went for $29 + $2 S&H pre-publication price. I hadn't played single game for 8-9 mos from working on that book 'til last three days previous to that National tournament--my excuse for losing all four games that first day. That book was not actually at all well received 'til, as per Hans de Jager of Belgium, word got out that Bloomdahl admitted on European TV having learned from and having developed his superior position game from a study of that book. Plenty of recognition quite suddenly from that.

As for lessons . . . best step in any case, lessons or no lessons, is to send me a 4-minute video of yourself shooting a perfectly straight shot to a corner pocket so I can see front-, side-, and rear views of your fundamentals and provide my critique. I can teach long distance! Send note to my er89121@aol.com address and i'll send ya directions as to how that video should be done.
