Anyone ever hear of Chandevere tips???

This is true...only it's more like 200 years. A frenchman, Francois Mingaud, who was a captain in the military, invented the leather tip in the early 1800's. As the story goes, Capt. Mingaud was imprisoned as a political prisoner, and spent his time in jail working up the first leather tip. When he got out he became the first trick shot artist, and performed for much of the European royalty.

BTW..French tips were the state of the art in tips for a 100 years.....
...which explains why tips are measured metrically instead of in inches.

He was imprisoned?
Soooo...he was the first pool player to get barred?....:)

There were ten different Chandivert tips from the Snooky, the softest, to the Rocky which was the hardest. I can't remember all their names but besides the two referenced there also was the Crown, the Rond, the Champion, the Match, the Eureka, the Royal and the Comprime. There is one other one and I believe it was called the Capone but I'm not sure.

Dick

In their time, I believe the compreme's were the hardest you could get. the hall of fame tips were the champions, and anyone who played with them would swear by them. After a while, though, the champions' quality dropped. The crowns were very reliable and my second favorite next to the champions. All the tips were hard. I never heard of the match or ronds.

Captain Mingaud was the inventor of the Masse shot, and lether tip as well as a hell of a lot of different masse shots...He asked if he could stay in prison longer to get it perfected before he got out. (Masse guys are a little different...lol)

I have shot all his shots and he was a very strong man to have made them all on nappy cloth without chalk. He had to have been the greatest alive at the tricks for sure. I doubt however that he was the very first trick shot icon or common parlor trick hustler in the world of cue sports. The 1800's are late in the vast history of the sport there had to have been people before him that could do strange things with ball bearings.

I would bet anything that in 1100AD someone said "Hey everyone look at this crazy shit!"

Either way the real freaky thing about all of this is that Captain Mingaud still played on Simonis cloth in the early 1800's.

Lol Yes, those tips are really great for the soft shooters.

Beyond that, I have no knowledge of them as in the original company or just the name was purchased.

i have real good pics of the package and all the printing is readable, someone please email me that knows how to post pics here, I took Hi-res images so they may need to be resized. I'm completely clueless when it comes to posting pics and resizing them etc. I would like to share what I have-I would like to learn more about them too, perhaps when someone who has been around longer than me will know. Sadly right now Dick Neighbors is in the hospital, I really want him to see them-he is very smart on the topic, I bought them in 89-90 I have 7 packages with 3 tips each. I cant remember who I bought them from, They are in a zip lock bag that was in the dark, so they look new. there is paraffin on the tips too so they arnt dry.

it says: PARIS dupuis 1832

on the back, i have to go now so i cant translate it; but perhaps that means since 1832 ???

I have some. let me know what kind you want and I'll see how many i have. Chandervert made 4 or 5 different tips.

Mike

Anyone ever heard of this tip, not sure exactly how its spelled. Maybe Chandevere or Chandeveer. It's pronounced Shan-day-veer

I came across one and put it on my cue, I like it but cant find anymore. Someone told me they were discontinued.

Were these the ones that came in both brown and gray and had a fiber back?? I remember some like this that played pretty good, but you absolutely had to chalk after every shot or you might miscue. Even after chalking, you might miscue and, yes, I'm aware that most miscues are the result of a bad stroke. A friend of mine who did cue repair and I tried them for a while but gave up in disgust.

A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y NOT.

Champion was the standard of the industry from the 50s to the 90s.

IMHO - they still are.

Guess who has some boxes.
