Got it yesterday, watched it today, very cool. I've heard a lot about Louie and saw still photos, but got to know him a little better by watching this ahead set video. I enjoyed it, thanks!
:p

Louie Roberts

My first Louie Roberts experience, I was at the State tournament in Columbia before it all became a popularity contest, the room became silent and when I looked up there was a man in a silk jogging suit. With each step he said lions and tigers and bears ohh my, repeating this each time and gradually in a louder voice. He was one of my favorite players to watch play 9 ball even if he was a little overbearing at times. Louie was an entertainer as much as he was a champion 9 ball player, I have many fond memories of watching Louie hit a major gear. I can assure you even though he loved action (maybe a little too much) his love for the game showed while competing. He gave one of the best players there the seven ball and out-ran the spot that day. He did not win playing Underclocked snooker however.

Danny did you ever play him?

DVDs are still available!

Thanks Ken, I got mine yesterday. I had the pleasure of seeing Louie play while he was the house pro at High Pockets in Memphis in the 80s.

The video is a classic. Louie's chatter is just as I remember him, he always tried to include people he knew in the conversation. Very likable guy and outstanding pool player.

Please explain the popularity contest statement.

Was Louie referring to the players as lions, tigers and bears?

Is anyone planning on posting the Louie Roberts video on Youtube?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

on page 9 of this thread, dardusm graciously offered to share his copy and wanted someone to post his copy to the Internet for everyone to enjoy. Because of him, many people that never got to know Louie or see Louie even shoot a rack, will be able to learn more about a legend who was taken from us far to early.

He was looking for someone who had the knowledge and ability to "get it up":D I knew I was capable of that, so I offered my services to him. (THE DVD SERVICES)

It might have went out yesterday or so.. if it did, maybe I will get it Monday. I will post shortly thereafter. His requirement was within one week of receiving it, but it won't be more then a day or 2 of receiving it.

I will be posting on my Vimeo site.

Thanks dardusm!

Please explain the popularity contest statement.

The owner of the pool room that has housed the state tournament decides, based on whether he likes you or not, if you can play in the Missouri Amateur State Championships. His definition of what a pro pool player is, is a loose term, and he uses it to bar players he does not care for. He also has let many out of state residents play in his tournament even though it is suppose to be for Missouri residents only, according to his rules.

Been going there and since he moved it to springfield for about28 yrs . wasn't aware of this . could you possibly supply a few names.

I won't 'out' the out of state players that have been allowed to play. They are obvious.

I know Danny Harriman was barred at an early age from playing in the tournament. Joe Woolford was barred for quite a few years. And Mike Banks Jr was under debate - can't confirm if he was allowed to play or not. That is real quick off the top of my head.

Danny played probably two yrs , in 83 maybe 84[i beat him one of those yrs], joe might of been barred but i believe he eventually played and won, and banks jr. played at least a couple yrs.

Exactly - they played and then were barred when Phil decided he didn't like them for one reason or another. One of the reasons because they gambled. :yikes:

And the year Joe won - I was with him. They had the score wrong on his last match of the round robin - had him losing instead of winning - and as we were walking out the door, a friend caught the 'error'.

Recently there was a thread about having a thread of the year award on AZ and I think this thread will end up being a shoe-in.

I don't know about the joe thing [you would think he would stand there at the scorekeepers table and atleast question things, but as far as gambling ,there has always been games at columbia and to a lesser extent springfield. I remember watching CJ play on theFRONT table taking on everybody. this is supposed to be about louie but has become a vendetta against Phil.

I was booted out at 15 before I ever played one time.

All the booting out happened because of Doug Brink. He won it at such a young age they started just throwing kids out that were good. That is how I see it. There has been more than a few kids kicked out of the MO 9 ball event.

Mike Jr. was allowed to play when he was 15-16 I watched him play.

What year did doug brink win it? not sayin your wrong, but i've been going every year except the first [which was won by Tom Ferry], and have never heard of or seen his name on the past champions banner.
