USPPA Reno players, did they get paid?

I think -- and this is subject to check -- it is $5,000 for first place and $3,000 for second place.

I saw the attorney that I sent Jeff to last week. He said the best way for everyone to collect was to go after the casino. I know many of you ate aginst this, but like he said, they will not want adverse publicity over this fiasco. Everyone who is owed money should sign up with Jeff and go at the casino with one voice. I was surprised that Nick wouldn't send a letter as most attorneys will send the first letter for free. Tony is never going to pay because you can't get blood out of a corpse. Anyone playing at his place or in any USPPA events, if there are any, should be shunned like the bubonic plague.

thebaby...You cannot be that naive, to actually believe that Tony doesn't know exactly what's going on...after 9 months. He's a turd and a ripoff artist...and obviously doesn't give a crap what other people think of him.

When thebaby mentioned the Jeff situation he was talking about a recent heart surgery he has had. (valve replacement I think?) He is currently recovering....
The winnings from that tournament would be huge in helping pay medical costs.

Dudley...I understand that, but you don't really think Tony gives a crap do you? He has no morality, or he wouldn't have ignored everything for this long. He has no intention of paying anybody...ever! What he needs is a good "blanket party". I used to like and admire the guy...no more. JMO

I never knew Tony very well, but in the distant past I had spoken with him and thought he was a pretty cool guy. His behavior in this entire fiasco has been far from honorable and unfortunately revealing of one's character, or lack thereof. This is such a prime example of how action speaks louder than words. I too have lost respect for this guy. I am also a former USPPA participant.

I suspect that it's time to give this conversation a rest. Tony has no money. He got in over his head and put on a tournament hoping to get more than 100 players. Do the math. No way he could match the payouts. All he has now are some old collector type pool tables and a run down motorhome that he lives in. Jeff seems to be the investor in Two Cushion Club and right now it's a 50/50 proposition that it will be here a year from now. Except for perhaps 25 players all the other good players will get old and be sitting around a pool hall somewhere looking for the big score that will never come. I love pool, played it all my life, but I saw a long time ago that there is no future in that sport. A plumber makes what Efren, Johnny, Rodney, and all the other champions make. It's just a fact. Pool ain't coming back. Time has passed it by.....

The optimist in me hopes Jeff and the others who haven't been paid still have something coming to them. It doesn't look good though.

Tony doesn't care. And the rest of the players who didn't get paid either need to do something or let it go. Jeff went to my attorney and for One thousand dollars will send a letter to the Pepermill for payment. either put up the money for an attorney or go to small claims court. Or let it go. If I win my lawsuit, I will put up a thousand, collect, and take fifty percent.

Yes there were expenses - but there were no payouts!!
So - Tony might actually have walked with a few bucks.
Still no excuse for what he did - and for NOT at least appearing on sight to help explain the situation.
I still think there is NO case for suing the Peppermill. If it is such a good case, have the attorney take it on contingency.

This make sense even to me, so the hurt parties need find an attorney to take it on contingency. My bet is it will be hard to find such an attorney.

What is your legal basis for saying there is No case? Are you an attorney? Both of the attorneys I spoke with, say the deep pockets are in one place, the Peppermill. One attorney is a well known pool player, the other is a well know litigator. The facts are; until someone takes legal action against the Peppermill, Tony, USPPA, or Two Pockets, NO ONE will get any money.

The legal animal is a complicated one.
A friend of mine accepted a job from a company. She had to hire a freelancer to help her get the job done. The freelancer did not meet the deadline of the job given to her. My friend had to hire another freelancer to finish the job due to a lack of communication by the first freelancer who didn't finish the job. The first freelancer did eventually turn the job in, but it was too late. My friend had always paid somebody else to do it, so she could meet her deadline. This was time-sensitive work.
The freelancer sued my friend in court for nonpayment and named the company she accepted the job from as a co-party. It was a circus in court in the peanut gallery.
The end result was my friend counter-sued the freelancer. The freelancer ended up not showing up for court, and the judge awarded my friend a judgment, which was never collected because the freelancer was a broke dog.

I think the better question is why anyone thinks the Casino has liability. Liability here is either from a breach of contract or a tort, like fraud. As far as I can see, none of the players were there because they accepted a contractual offer from the peppermil, the deal was with USPPA, the entity that sponsored the event and offered the prizes to entice players to enter the event. USPPA breached when it didnt pay.
That the Peppermill has deep pockets is correct. It will use those deep pockets to punish anyone who tries to claim that Tony's bs is their responsibility. For all any of us know he still owes them money as well. Whether or not he does none of the players had a contract with the Peppermill and I don't think anyone who went there can say different. That leaves the argument that somehow the Peppermill in its first year as the venue should have realized that Tony was underfunded and would crap out even though he'd been running events across town for 20 years or so without a problem.
As far as a claim for fraud you need to show that you relied on a statement that was known to be false and that you were justified in doing so. What is the statement made by the Peppermill that was both false and that anyone relied on?
There's a reason that no attorney has stepped up to this, and it's simply that there's a great case against the guy with no money and a crappy case against the hotel that has money and no responsibility for what USPPA and Tony did.
The handwriting was on the wall for this one when then junior and wheelchair event was underway the week before. The international players were supposed to get a perform for meals and somehow it was always tomorrow, tomorrow. I think Tony finally got them buffet passes but it was a struggle.
