I could be wrong about Doug winning the event. It was 17 years ago when I was 15, much longer for Doug. The story goes Doug snapped it off, and this led way for the banning.
Vendetta is a harsh word. I am amazed how you could blame Joe and not Phil for the scoring 'error'. That speaks volumes. All I know is that when it was pointed out the score was wrong, there wasn't even a hint that it needed to be questioned further or consulted with the other player or review the score sheet that was signed and turned in by both players as well. That speaks volumes as well.
let's get back to Louie - another player that was barred from the State tournaments as well. At least he was a pro.
I can also testify to Louie hocking his cue to quite a few people at a tournament in Birmingham Al and when it was over he pretended to be pissed off and broke it..... Pretty good move.
Was Louie referring to the players as lions, tigers and bears?
Yes I played Louie and held my own when I was fifteen, however at the end of the battle we eventually raised the stakes and Louie started to hit a gear. Needless to say I began to realize before it cost me too much that I should live to fight another day. Ohh and yes Louie was referring to the players in the State tournament as Lions and Tigers and bears - however even as a youngster I knew he was being a little facecious (I know I spelled it wrong so scalp me.) There will never be another Louie Roberts and I admired his outgoing flamboyant style as I never had that personality, simply put he was the best entertainer/9 ball player I ever had the pleasure to watch compete. I have many stories of Louie on and off the table, he was a bit like James Dean who was before my time - but I heard he was too fast to live and too young to die - well that was the Louie I knew in a few words. Once I saw him competing for $20.00 a game and giving up alot of weight, a group of kids came in and Louie told the fellow he was playing he had to take a break. Louie proceeded to go over and shoot some trick shots for the group of kids, he was a Master of showmanship and very generous when it came to giving out a free lesson clinic. I once had him sign a twenty and he told me to make it a dollar as I would spend the twenty, he was right.
Believe it or not the video of him playing gary serville is not Louie at his finest - that was more of a promotion match than the real Louie Roberts experience, many more stories I have but I will not ramble on.
I wrote a kind of fun Louie story on this thread already but there were others that weren"t so great. While he was in New Orleans I tried to get him to stop drinking-- but shortly after he was detoxin' kind of bad so I took him to the VA hospital to get some help. I remember him layin on the floor kind of in the lobby but not and the automatic doors kept opening and closing...he was real thirsty and we got him some apple juice in the box out the vending machine which he needed so bad he squeezed out all over his face and shirt. He finally got to talk to a counselor but Louie had that down to a science. He knew exactly what to say depending if he thought he needed to be admitted or not. At this time he didn't stay but I remember them telling me he had 2 pieces of needles broke off in his arm....I liked Louie alot but he was a handful. We left there and went to the pool room. We had a weekly tournament later that night and somehow Louie talked me into paying him the first place money in advance.. " You know I'm gonna win It"....So he bought drinks for everyone with the money and then proceeded to get me off the hook by winning the tourney just like he said he would.....The fact that reports come in that one person saw Louie play real real good and another saw him play bad doesn't surprise me at all. With fromula players that's the way it went. When the mixture was bad they couldn't make a ball but when it was right especially in his case ...look out.
dardusm - the audio appears to be out of sync with the video, but makes me wonder if it was on your end or whoever burnt the videos. Because the Johnston city one was out of sync too. Damn... I'm going to have to try and sync it up now.. haven't ever tried that before:smile: Anyone else that has this DVD.. I'm thinking you don't have any issue with the audio, correct?
What the hell is a formula player? Louie was a world class player before he got hooked on drugs, he didn"t need drugs to shoot pool, he just needed them. And as far as needles go you are the first to ever and i mean ever bring that up.
A formula player is someone who may use a combination of drugs and/or alcohol to produce a desired effect in their pool game.
