I run my auctions from Sunday to Sunday and plan to auction this fabulous Barry off to the highest bidder. I thought I'd offer it out to AZ for a few days and see if anyone here would like to discuss purchasing it before it hits the auction block.
This cue was ordered from Barry and completed in 1990 for Nick Varner and Hal Mix. The history is detailed in Barry's letter, a scan of which is below. The sale will include the cue, the letter, two recent work receipts from Barry and Barry's copies from his original order. The cue was the 7th that Barry made for the public, his first 10 efforts were apprentice cues, made for, and kept by, his family. The cue was built before Barry had established his own river of materials, all from original Gus Szamboti stock. When I got the cue, it had a recent leather wrap, and seeing how Barry still has his father's original Penn linen, he took it back to the way it was originally ordered and made.
This cue is completely constructed from original Gus Szamboti stock. Everything white (including the butt cap!) is ivory. I'm not real good at setting prices, I'm an auctioneer. The last Barry I auctioned off brought $8,900. That cue was a pretty Hoppe with a steel joint and a couple of inlays. I think this is a larger cue both work and material-wise, with better provenance and more collectible, but this is probably a little worse selling market.
The butt is 28 1/2 inches and weighs 15 1/4 ounces. The shafts are both 28 1/2 inches with 12.5b mm tips and both weigh 3 7/8 ounces. Here's some pics:
Please feel free to call me.
