I run my auctions from Sunday to Sunday and plan to auction this fabulous Barry off to the highest bidder. I thought I'd offer it out to AZ for a few days and see if anyone here would like to discuss purchasing it before it hits the auction block.

This cue was ordered from Barry and completed in 1990 for Nick Varner and Hal Mix. The history is detailed in Barry's letter, a scan of which is below. The sale will include the cue, the letter, two recent work receipts from Barry and Barry's copies from his original order. The cue was the 7th that Barry made for the public, his first 10 efforts were apprentice cues, made for, and kept by, his family. The cue was built before Barry had established his own river of materials, all from original Gus Szamboti stock. When I got the cue, it had a recent leather wrap, and seeing how Barry still has his father's original Penn linen, he took it back to the way it was originally ordered and made.

This cue is completely constructed from original Gus Szamboti stock. Everything white (including the butt cap!) is ivory. I'm not real good at setting prices, I'm an auctioneer. The last Barry I auctioned off brought $8,900. That cue was a pretty Hoppe with a steel joint and a couple of inlays. I think this is a larger cue both work and material-wise, with better provenance and more collectible, but this is probably a little worse selling market.

The butt is 28 1/2 inches and weighs 15 1/4 ounces. The shafts are both 28 1/2 inches with 12.5b mm tips and both weigh 3 7/8 ounces. Here's some pics:

GREAT cue Kevin. It looks as if this is Barry's 17th cue, not 7th. I don't think that makes a hill of beans as to the value of this cue. Especially with the great provenance. Nick has always played with a 57" cue so it makes perfect sense his name is asscociated with the cue. Good luck with your sale.

I didn't count the first 10 as they were "apprentice" cues and kept in the family. When Barry and I talked about this stick, it was referred to as his "7th" and I got in the habit.

Thanks

Gotcha....

Uh...............I........... I'm at a loss for words. Wow! I do not think they get much better than that. I love seeing these types of listings. I doubt that you will need it, but Good Luck!! Heavenly cue!

How about a link to the listing? ;)

I'll put it up for auction this Sunday night.

And, trust me, once that happens, I'll have neon arrows all over AZ directing people to the auction. Maybe I'll even fly a blimp over the TAR Stadium during the Shane/Alex fight.

Thanks

Kevin

Obviously, there can be no better provenance than what is offered in this letter.

A truly beautiful Barry cue made from Gus parts for Hal Mix/Nick Varner.

Historical, beautiful, and all neatly documented. It doesn't get much better than this.

GL with your sale.

Best,

Thanks for the kind words.

While we are on the kind words, let me say that dealing with Barry Szamboti is always a complete pleasure. Barry values what he is doing, is totally humble regarding his own efforts, and always makes me feel like my satisfaction is important to him.

The tradition continues, what a cool thing.

Thanks again

Kevin

OK guys, looks like this one won't make it to auction. The Barry is SOLD.

Thanks so much to everybody that expressed an interest.
