Who has a chance for the Mosconi Team ?

You bring up some valid points. I think Brandon is on the edge of his peak right now, so that's why I'm throwing his name in the ring. When somebody plays pool every single day, hitting thousands of balls, enters as many tournaments as they can, well, that to me sends a message that they're serious and in tip-top shape!

Shuff has great potential but right now at this point for this years Mosconi team he doesnt make the cut. He is not a top five player in the USA right now.

I agree, I too think Brandon is on the verge of taking his first major. He won the NCS 8-Ball event and unfortunately although he had secured a spot representing the US in the World 8-Ball Championship in 2009, it was cancelled. He will be soon representing the US as we are working on Brandon getting that spot back. He is also a truly nice and hardworking guy with a good head on his shoulders.

I'd also like to say that in the past year or two I've seen Dechaine, who is still relatively young, mature in his game and as a person in my interactions with him. He has a lot to be happy about and proud of.

If I had to choose 5 US players based on ability AND positive overall sportsmanship I'd have to personally go with and not listed in any particular order:

SVB
Dechaine
Wilkie
Shuff
Robles

There are several others too...these were the first 5 from the top of my head.

I'm not so sure. He's in 4th place now on the Mosconi rankings. If he does well at the U.S. Open, he just might be a shoe-in. :p

A lot of pressure on Bubba or "Love Sponge" this week!

Putnam lost last night so he is already on the losers side. Which means hes going to have to win at least 9 or 10 matches to get to the final 8. Tough sledding for him from here on out.

I think Johnny Archer and Mike Dechaine, have a chance!

USA TEAM RANKINGS

These are the current US team rankings, from the AZB main page.

1. Shane Van Boening 627.5
2. Mike Dechaine 541.5
3. Johnny Archer 455.5
4. Shawn Putnam 435.5
5. Rodney Morris 427.5
6. Corey Deuel 406.5
7. Dennis Hatch 365
8. Hunter Lombardo 354.5
9. Mike Davis 344.5
10. Charlie Williams 333.5
11. Earl Strickland 321.5
12. Stevie Moore 315.5
13. Jeremy Sossei 250.5
14. Oscar Dominguez 232.5
15. Brandon Shuff 226.5

It seems that Shane is a lock, but with the US Open being a ranking points event, who still has a mathematical chance to make the Mosconi cup team ?

I hope they make it in.
Regards,
Lock N Load.

You're right. I would be best served by not replying to newbies who are anonymous to veteran members of this forum. It has nothing to do with whether they're in the pool community or not. In some cases, the newbies on this forum can be another member identity who posts under multiple user names.

Thanks for the reminder.

Wow, how arrogant. For a veteran member this surely is a very dumb post "Sometimes ranking points are helpful, but American pool politics behind the scenes has a way of effecting change at random, to include last-minute rule changes" especially concerning Matchroom.

Uh huh.

Yeah its evil Johnny and Shawn again. Bending Matchroom policies at will.

That was on the other hand just a great first addition to the thread you made.

Whether you like it or not what Jam said was correct, politics DO come into play when it comes to decisions like this. Or maybe you have not heard of the politics that took place when Archer and many other players said they would simply refuse to play in the Mosconi Cup if Earl was selected as a member of the team. And subsequently after that a vote was taken for the wildcard spot on the Mosconi Cup team with a slew of American pool players as choices and low and behold, Earl was not one of the players on that very long list that could be voted on...

This is just wrong, not fair,Earl mite be different then most people and what ever, but if you have the abilities and skill level that is needed to repersent your country, you should never be denied that opputunity especially after you had just eared it ,by playing great all year long, unless you are totally unfit to be around other people, and are a danger to dissappoint your country, other then that there is no good enough reason to screw someone out of that oppuntunity, sure Earl gets mad ,everybody does,Earl is just a little more animated, who ever gives our country the best chance to win,or who ever has the most points earned from all year long, thats how it should go,should never come down to who you know!

I felt this thread might be worth a bump this morning...

For sure. If Matchroom gives weighting to the points accumulated in the U.S. Open, Dennis Hatch and Shawn Putnam are neck and neck. Whoever comes out on top today may determine who will be a member of this year's Team USA at the Mosconi Cup!

This is the only title that Alex Pagulayan, to my knowledge, has not yet accumulated in his already-lengthy list of championship wins.

Darren Appleton would really set the pool world on fire if he manages to pull back-to-back wins at the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship.

That said, gotta give my rally cry:

USA, all the way.
USA, all the way.

USA, ALL THE WAY!

Alex did win this once event once before. 2003 if I recall.

Well, it definitely wasn't 2003. I remember that year very well, because I was there, and my partner should have won the whole shebang!:embarrassed2::p;):grin:

2003 was the year Jeremy Jones won the U.S. Open.

I stand corrected, and you are indeed correct. Alex won it in 2005. :o

Here is a link for the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships: U.S. Open 9-Ball Champions.

Dennis, I believe is a lock. Whether he makes it in on points or not. His image is on the website (Matchroom) and the new banner promoting this years event.

He's good for the team, awfully exciting to watch in that format with the fire he brings into the arena. He pumps up everyone in the building. GREAT for TV.

He belongs, I said that after seeing him play the first time 2 years ago.

It's a hell of a tournament if you have never been. Matchroom productions does a fine job.

I don't think anybody has "officially" made the team, but if you look at the rankings to date, Shane looks to be a shoe-in!

I hear ya as far as 'officially'...

If Matchroom goes strictly by points, who's Team USA this year ?
