Something that has always bugged me!

like what you like

What you think looks good in a cue is up to you............ it's like women... some guys like big tits and some like just a mouth full..... some guys like a big booty ass and some like a tight little butt.... some like em tall and some like em short............. young/old..... skinny/chubby...............

It is never that one is better than another it is subjective.

I think (as if anyone cared) a wrap of any kind hides the wood. I believe it is all and only about the beautiful wood....

My father always told me "Son.... don't waste your wood."

Why would I need data to back up what I said?I said I know some people that like linen but most don't so in other words the pool players I know only some like linen but most don't.I don't need data cause I know these people.Should I get them to sign a affidavit and post it that they don't like Linen?I only stated what I know around the players I know thats it.You seem borderline offended that I wrote that but it was just a harmless evaluation that linen brings down the look of some beautiful cues.Takecare Scott

The sentence you wrote said that most players don't like linen.
Not that most of the players 'you know' don't.

A few IMHOs can go a long way.

The actual cost for materials in a cue is minuscule compared to the labor. I build cues completely to the customers specifications so, what they desire is what they get. With my customers it's a ratio of about 10 to 1 in favor of linen over all other wraps combined, including no wraps. I've found linen favorite then wood, then leather and lastly cork.

This was the case many years ago - Willie Hoppe days.

For quite some time now, leather wrap blanks have been just about
the same thickness as linen.

Dale

Yeah many New wraps are skived pretty thin, and have prints or textures to be preserved. Some of The old wraps back in those days were thick, raw, sanded, dyed, polished and what not, but You still have the stacked wraps around that some people like. How deep are people cutting the wrap grooves on those? Personally I haven't done one yet, That's why I ask. I mostly do linen or wood handles.

As far as people's preferences, I'd say I see a fairly equal number of people on each side of the linen or wood fence.

Greg,

I've always kept the wrap groove the same depth with stacked as I do with either linen or leather, about .025".

Stacked, by it's design, is much thicker when installed. But, it's cut and sanded to fit the cue once it's installed. So, you can go with whatever groove depth you want, but I choose a normal depth so I can go back if I want or need to.

By the way, the only thing I don't like about the stacked wraps is cutting them down to size. It can take a little while.

I know its not a big deal but I never said most players don't like them.If you read my original comment it says" I Know people that like linen but most don't"If you can't tell that comment is referring to people I know than I don't know what to tell ya.

I like linen. I can use all sorts of different colors to highlight different woods that I used for the cue. I also like the feel of linen. I like it soft and smooth like a clean sheet straight out of the drier. It absorbs sweat and is easily replaced when it gets too nasty to clean. It feels the way I think it should feel.

I gotta side with Dale on this one. Your writing skills need polish.

Thanks for the Info Royce, I did not realize you could go that thin with them. I'll have to remember not to cut the groove too deep when I finally try It out for myself. Someone once mentioned to me how to cut the ends level, and stay off of the finish, but the middle still needs to be sanded level. Yeah It sounds like getting them down to size would take some doing, and a little bit of time.

I've done something similar for a handle/grip on a antique stick bow before, I've yet to do one on a cue though.

Greg

I also had read that the groove needed to be deeper for leather, nice to have that cleared up.

I dunno....my reading skills are pretty good and my interpretation was the same as his.

I'm just sittin here waitin for these hideous givaway linen wrapped cues....

Maybe one of them that Szamboni sticks.....or a Babushka......or perhaps a Josh....Strout, James....whichever...or both.... I hear they got linen....

Do us all a favor, take it to your most recent English teacher

Look into it.

You can weave around what were debating about all you want but again if somebody says"I know people"it would be common sense that they would be talking about somebody they know.Just admit your wrong that I didn't say what you said.I can admit when I type on the computer my grammer skills are off but it still doesn't change the fact that your wrong.

scsuxci sayeth:

"I know some people that like linen but most don't"
...........................................................................................

Do you have any data to back up this claim?

I'm aware many players don't like linen, but MOST??

Most people I encounter prefer linen - and it must be the 'look'.
The old fashion linen was untreated, felt like linen not wood, and became
softer over time. Since the advent of pressed/polished linen wraps, none of the above applies.
In fact, most players seem to want it as smooth and slick as possible.
So, it must be the look.

Dale

This is the second one you quoted which is wrong.I can't beat a dead horse but anyone that reads my original comment agrees with me 100% no matter what my typing skills are like
