Pool Secrets

Pool is a science of mathematics & physics.

It could be said that learning the game is about gaining knowledge & learning the application skills.

My experience is this. Some have raw talent, some need to build their skills. Practicing will help both kinds of players.

I'm just glad that someone came up with the idea, it has been fun & profitable playing this game for the last 56 years.

They are secrets until they are reveled, once reveled they become Technique

No, once they are revealed they become info, once the info is applied it becomes technique. But I really think we are misusing the term secret.

Wow.....there are no secrets huh? Just aim as hard as you can for the contact point right? That would mean efren is the most naturally talented human being on earth.

Ok if I were to tell you that the best way to jump the cue ball is to hit it at a steep angle below the center of its axis with a fair amount of force, would you consider that a secret? No, it's just the way it's done.

Maybe we are just disagreeing on terms here. What some people are considering "secrets" I just consider information. That's all, nothing special or magical.

I think that people who are serious and are willing to do the work understand this and that lazy people want to believe that there is a secret that will transform their game without all the hard work.

Agreed.

Naji, how did you come by this information that pro players jump on their match table to keep their opponents from practicing? Do women pros do this too? Can you name any men or women pros who do this?

Absolutely true all are important, but, 9 or 10 ball game, has the most wide varieties of shots that is not in other games, including kicks and jumps. By the time you get to the one pocket strategy game, you are armed with that knowledge.

no need for a long discussion since its off topic but there is a lot of kicking in 1p which would cary over to 9/10 ball
how balls react in clusters and caroms is used much more in 1p and straight pool .
third in 9/10 ball you know what ball you have to go to next
not true in 1p when there are many possible shots
learning imagination is a skill you get more in 1p

on topic
i agree with those that are equating "secrets"= knowledge

in the old days all the top players kept knowledge "secret"

there is no magic bullet to playing great pool
its a combination of talent /knowledge/ and practice

icbw
but i dont think so in this case

No need to say names. Just keep that in mind when you are in tournaments, or arranged match.

I have to disagree with you here. I don't know what kind of 'pro' players you're familliar with but I've been around a long time and as far as I know it works like this: When your table is open, you can go there and practice. When your opponent arrives, it's common courtesy to split racks with them. That means one rack each until your match is called.

I've been playing against pros for decades and it's always been that way.

I'm sure there is always the occasional sleezy person but that person is no 'PRO' and they would never get away with such bahavior in any legitimate event.

Generalizing like that gives pro players a bad rep. If you're going to give them a bad rep, then make sure you can back it up with actual facts, and make sure you're not talking about the excepton rather than the rule.

This has been my experience at pro events as well. Not that I am a player, just a spectator.

There are obviously a lot tips, tricks, and little "secrets" (that aren't real secrets :p) when it comes to pool. It's really not in my nature to get overly dramatic about things, or too philosophical, but I do believe that when it comes to all of this type of information -- when you're game is ready for some new info you will find it.

I think I have come across a lot of very powerful information about this game. A lot of it I have read right here on AZ or before that RSB (going back to 1998 or so). Quite a bit of it went right in one ear and out the other. I just wasn't ready for it. I swear I can read about something and not even be interested in it and then a couple of years later I come across that same information and it seems game changing (sorry I can't think of an example right now). It's weird I tell you....just weird.

I answered a thread earlier with the following, thought it might be beneficial to many to read so i make it a new thread:

"I totally disagree, pool is science, and does have secrets that not many people know, or many people know something about those secrets, but not able to associate them for shots, mainly because, 80-90% of players do not have tables at home to experiment with or the time to do so, and at pool halls they just want to hit it. I have been playing for almost 37 years, Please do not do the same mistake i did, do the following:

1. Learn the secrets first- do not spend one hour of practice before you lean, some instructors do not know all secrets, I think i am there now, thanks to last tournament i went to, which revealed my weakness in one type of a shot that made me loose, that got me determined to keep at it
2. Pick a cue shaft, and tip kind and stick with it, never change it, unless you loose it, buy a box of 20 or 50 tips for life (i mean it), i recommend 11 to 10 mm. No matter what cue it is, you need to learn it
3. Apply secrets, practice, practice, until you start making all kind of balls consistently including banks, with no english to full english all possibilities which are tremendous in pool, and should you miss a a ball, do not miss by more than the edge of pocket, practice at AM day time, mid day, and at night, to take it one step further record finding, situations, what you eat, drink, until you master it. The reason for practice is not just to make the balls, it is also for your brain to instantly go through the check list for any type of shot to execute correctly, you will need to pause and think of what the cue ball needs to do for every shot-this is critical
4. Play 9 or 10 ball, until you are top player
5. Play one pocket when you master 9 pr 10 ball, i wish i did.
6. Go to tournaments, so you get the pressure practice, and measure your skill, record type of shots missed, know why missed, and then practice again
7. If you are like me, do not want to learn from someone, or not welling to listen to advise, then get ready for very very long time

8. Having a table at home, will certainly help, if you cannot do it regularly at pool halls, or your friends wont let you practice

9. Pro players know the game, when a match is called, or arranged match, you will be surprised they are there before you at the table to prevent you from practicing. Insist on having 2 to 5 min practice at least"

Over the years I've have played many, many pros. I have never been denied my fair share of practice time.

As to the rest, "the secret to pool" is pretty simple: make the balls behave the way you want them to behave. That's it.

Of course actually doing that in real life is a bit tougher than learning "the secret."

Before I knew how to play I learned that jumping below the axis is a foul. Even if you are serious, how will you ever know what it is you need to work on if you never run into a person willing to GIVE you the cake? Working extremely hard on something unnecessarily is pretty insane, wouldn't you think?

We will only have an agreement if you come to the conclusion that it is possible. Then, your only choice now is to seek out SECRETS. I know this may smoke your wires....but really think about it.

You can work as hard as you want, but you will never get there if you don't do the right things.

Thanks Dave your wealth of knowledge, web site and efforts for people to learn the game is tremendous, however, i , and please forgive me to say this, indeed you have good advises and picked up some, but still lacks the one specific advise that will make a lot of difference. One day i asked you, is there a DVD that shows what players are thinking of and how when they shoot, your answer was i wish that was 10 years ago! Finally i am there, and will attempt to put out a DVD that will undoubtedly open eyes. And will surly request your permission to allow me to reference your library and wealth of knowledge.

Naji, I saw you today playing Buck. Hope all is well. All I know is, if you're putting out a DVD - can I just be in the background and maybe I'll rack balls or dance.. or something?

There are no secrets, only things you don't know.

Secrets are things people know but won't tell you, that is not because they are secrets, it is most likely because they don't like you. For instance , they probably won't tell you your fly is open. This is not a secret, it's just something you don't know and people who don't like you won't tell you. See ?

There is magic bullet, you might have not gotten there yet.

if you give me the "magic bullet" and it works
id be a testimonial to your dvd and help you make a fortune:smile:
you can pm me the magic bullet so i can keep it a secret
