VEPP online video clips

It was moved to the WFS section where products for sale go. Offering links to free information goes in the main forum or the appropriate topical forums.

Thank you very much for providing the links to all the free previews of the content. As previously mentioned one can learn a lot just from the free stuff you provide.

I think it got subsumed in the For Sale forum. The funny thing is there is someone else running an instructional for sale thread on the front page. Makes one wonder why, if your thread was moved, theirs has not.

just sayin'

If you could let the mods know about the other instructional for sale thread, I'm sure the mods would be happy to move it to the For Sale forum if that's where it belongs.

I personally like it when new products are announced on the Main Forum. I never visit any of the other forums. This is where I come for my information, and I like to know when new instructional materials become available. For example, I was happy to learn about Stan's DVD, Nathan's DVDs, Gene's DVD, Lee's new book, etc. If they weren't announced here, I might not have known about them.

Regards,
Dave

You make a valid point, however, I do think that we need to be consistent. If your instructional for sale was moved to the For Sale forum, then it seems reasonable that other instructional for sale items be moved to the For Sale forum.

Having said that, I do wonder if exceptions should be made for instructional books and DVDs. As you said, we would never find out about them otherwise since we're not regular users of the For Sale forums.

One small thing I'm proud of is that I have never (not once) instigated a report of a post, thread, or poster. If there's something going on I speak about it here, or figure out a way to deal with it on my own terms. (That's why the occasional numnut that crawls out of the AZ Clown Car goes on sequester :-)

However, shortly after I mentioned the obvious discrepancy in applying "da rules" that udder thread also got moved. Maybe a coincidence.

Put another way: it's too bad the rules suddenly needed to be enforced after all those other guys got miles and miles of traction (read: advertisement) on the main forum. You and Bob have been long time contributors to this forum (unlike some newcomers who seem to have just showed up for the sales potential) and should have been cut some (read: a lot) of slack. They should have at least grandfathered you for a few months.

The issue I see with moving Dr. Dave's thread (or anyone else's regarding new product announcements) is that the For Sale forum is inundated with cues, cues, and more cues. The day your thread got moved (sometime a little after 8:30 AM-ish) I went to look for it during my lunch break. In just about 4 hours, it had already been bumped back to page 4.

If announcements about new merchandise and such have to be moved to the For Sale Forum, perhaps there needs to be 2 sub-forums. One for cues, and one for everything else.

The cue flippers over-run the For Sale Forum. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just makes anything else get lost in the storm.

Lou:

I agree 100%. Dr. Dave has put a lot of good contribution "in the bank" (read: real contribution, not coming on here for the first time for the purposes of spamming the threads). Stan has too. So has Lee, for that matter. There are others. These guys have "banked" a lot of points in their favor as no-doubt contributing members. So I agree that some exceptions should be made for obvious contributory members.

However, because of a few outright rule-breakers, as well as the trolling that AZB has been experiencing recently (side note: when is that AZB Clown Car going to depart -- can we wave it off? ;) ), methinks the readership is a little more sensitive, as well as the mods being a little more vigilant, than previously. So it's an unfortunate sign of the times.

QUESTION (which is actually a suggestion): how about the idea of posting one's product announcement in the Wanted / For Sale thread (which conforms to the rules), and then posting a "heads up" here -- in the Main forum -- with a link to that thread that lets folks know about that product announcement thread's existence, which I'm pretty sure isn't against the rules? This way, the "heads up" thread redirects the readers to that product announcement thread when they click on it, and if they want to comment, those comments go into *that* product announcement thread in the W/FS forum, instead of continually bumping the "heads up" thread in the Main forum?

This way, it serves the purpose of what Dr. Dave was talking about -- being able to discover the existence of new products, *without* all the spamming, bumping, and hoopla that goes with "should that thread be here, or shouldn't it?".

What think ye?

Lou, it's not like Dr. Dave hasn't been plugging VEPS for a long time, as well. Yes, this is a new collaboration with Bob, but none of this is new to the forum. Dr. Dave doesn't need to be grandfathered.

That's not to say that I want Dr. Dave's threads moved to For Sale, any more than Gene or Nathan or anyone. I like seeing information on these products. I hope the rules are applied equally for everyone.

justadub, I can see your point...maybe he should be allowed one thread like Geno's "thread that won't die." I know he's offering "free" consultation, but it's also free advertisement and an entree to get people to buy his product once he has them on the line.

I agree. And Dr. Dave has also contributed plenty here, for "free".

And with that, I am off to my sisters, for a Thanksgiving Dinner that can't be beat. Fortunately I don't have to stop and pick up the garbage on the way, and I don't think I'll be relegated to the Group W bench, or even the kiddie table... Happy Thanksgiving, Lou. And Sean. And JB. And Dr. Dave. The whole lot of you!

The only thing Gene is offering is testimonials and free phone lessons.
Lou is trying to spin in his direction. Wake-up people, Tony Robles is even telling people about Gene's free info.

Sean, good thoughts all the way around. As we both acknowledge, the rules need to be applied fairly. But a forum like this runs on the content provided by respected members who participate on a regular basis and have established some credibility through their longevity and history. And, as you've pointed out, some members here have "banked' a lot of goodwill with the forum at large. Certainly, they should, at least to some degree, be allowed some leeway, if not given outright protection.

No one comes here to listen to all the clowns troll and make fun of those writing decent content. Yet that's where the group seems to be headed lately with all the clowns, trolls, stalkers, and wannabe bullies. It is what it is, but look what happens: why would someone like Dr. Dave or Bob Jewett now be motivated to participate here as fully as they have been? Why would any member who contributes instructional advice, shares their pool playing experiences, writes trip reports or original stories be motivated to continue to provide that kind of content when they're not protected? I know that I am personally reassessing what I'm willing to spend my good time contributing here.

As to the AZ Clown Car, it'll never leave. As long as the forum continues to devolve into a circus it will always be here and, just like at the circus, they will endlessly pour out of the car. All you can do is let them come out of the car and send them on their way.

But why are you happy? So you have new material to copy to your website, or it would give you the right to advertise in the main forum.

Sorry, Sean, I got off on a tangent and didn't address your question :-)

I think your suggestion is the minimum that could be done. However, the bottom-line is that not everyone reads the sub-forums. Lets face it: the Main Forum is, well, the Main Forum. I think there should be some provisos for guys like Dave and Bob to have their stuff advertised here. I mean, we're going to be stuck with Geno's thread (or some variant of it) forever.
