can the commentators slam the USA more?

i dunno David.....who are historically the best players ever?......Phillipinos....who have some of the most unorthodox strokes out there. I care less what it looks like and more the end result.

also.....do you want to watch every player with the same stroke same demeanor same reaction....or do you wanna see guys like Efren....Django....McCready etc.

The crowd loves Rodney, Earl, Efren, all for different reasons, but all I think because they are out of the box.

In which way do you mean it favors the Europeans?

Wondering about that, too – after all, until a few years ago, it used to be won by the American team year in, year out… That the European team has been touted as the favourite in recent years still feels like a relative novelty to old-timers like myself.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

He needs to understand, his ability to professionally ''realize'' his spot amongst this elite group is to report not ''retort''. Pool is yet to have a GREAT non color announcer in rotation pool. Rotation pools agressive nature requires a Wiley individual, with perspective and Zero preference of outcome.

I wish we could find commentators that would just commentate on the match at hand! Don't worry about what colored shirt the players are wearing or what flag they're flying. These guys are GREAT players! Respect their game and don't worry about what country they represent.

You know Jim is biased to the Europeans so put someone in the commentating box with him like Kim Davenport. He'll keep him in line and maybe stop some of that trash from coming out of his mouth. Plus it would be nice to have someone in there that actually knows how to play the game and can analyze and talk you thru the rack!

Well, I've watched e.g. Efren and Earl many times live and from close up, and their strokes are straight as an arrow - in other words, I fail to see why you bring their names up in this context. What I meant is one rarely sees great Snooker players get away with jerky cueing actions, e.g. à la Alex Higgins (a fomer two-time World Champion, now deceased, and my favourite Snooker pro to watch ever, uniquely colourful character).

As to your mention of Keith McCready and Francisco Bustamante: two great players whose strokes are by no means straight as an arrow, but whose cueing action is as fluid and smooth as any.

Note I'm not trying to make any kind of case here - I love watching great players for different reasons. I'm merely saying, I know where Wych is coming from when he keeps praising some players' cueing action. If one listens to his commentary with a neutral, non-patriotic ear, one will notice he'll never say anything negative about e.g. SVB's stroke. In other words, I feel he's effectively talking about beliefs/preferences in matters of technique, not continent of origin.

And, for what it's worth, not all of the historically greatest players of all time are from the Philippines, my friend!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Not only did Jim Wych say he thought USA would win, he also said ( when pushed ) he personnaly favoured USA. The fact is , team Europe has played stronger, cant blame Jim Wych for that.:)

Not sure what commentary you guys are listening to.

I have been watching and listening to the whole series and I cannot hear any favouritism either way. There was an interview with Jim earlier on that veered him slightly towards a USA allegiance, even though he professed to not wanting to choose a side. I can understand the frustrations of the fans in USA to watch while Europe takes a stranglehold on the 2011 series. This doesn't mean that they should read anything into the commentary that is not blatantly one-sided. Through my ears it is not.
As to the assumption that Matchroom has a hand in influencing Jim's comments...I think that is a stretch. If that were the case they would have employed an 'over the top' English commentator. You all know the one I am referring to...lol.
The interviewer/presenter has however made his chosen side clear enough. as he is English he has sided with Europe. Even so, his comments are well within the bounds of professionalism and sometimes 'tongue in cheek'. This is the same guy who gave Earl all his dues in past years even after being refused after match interviews by him.
I am also enjoying Jay's stint behind the microphone. He is playing his role as second chair very well and providing insightful comments that are also well meted. I am sure he is rooting for USA but sticks to the job at hand.
The matches seem to be fairly even for luck and rolls but mistakes have been made by each team. It seems that they were less crucial when made by Europe and capitalized better by Europe when they were made made by USA.
I hope everyone is enjoying some great pool being played by both sides.

I will probably post in another thread what I think about team dynamics and team member's behaviour...after all...this one is about the commentary

Oh...I forgot. I am from Oz so I don't have any outstanding favourite :)

Why on earth would you put Putnam agaiinst the guy he just lost the finals of the US open to???

It was ridiculous and political to make CW the leader of team USA...

Jaden

It all becomes ''Clear'', that CW is a ''team'' player. Right?

I'm not a big fan of CW, either, but I thought that each team picks thier own players blindly. It could just be coincidence that the two ran into each other.

And there are criteria for each singles as well :

I'd bet that Ruijsink is doing the math (based on the above link) and took a shot that CW might send out Putnam in that match...

Seems the ABP brain trust is in charge of the team this year and we're seeing the results.

I do not get your point here as The Mosconi Cup promotes the game to a potential worldwide audience. What's wrong with that ?

Just got home from day three of MC and I wasn't able to hear the commentators so I can't say there was any bias, but I can say that there were three things that really stuck out to me:
1. The Euro fans are way more into it and much louder. For being on American soil, the Euros sure seem to have the "homefield" advantage based on crowd support.
2. Chris Melling has such a nice fluid stroke and some serious game to go with it. He was very impressive.
3. The most obvious thing lacking from the Americans that the Euros all appear to have can be summed up in one word - COMPOSURE

I was cheering for Team USA all the way (still am), but the Euros looked more determined and focused - like it mattered more to them.

Jim's a snooker player. He has it drilled into his head that its snooker fundamentals or bust. Hes not partial to Europe, hes partial to how he was taught to play billiards.
