Pool gets a 5 minute spotlight on ABC news today (video included)

My review:

Awesome that clips from the DVD were shown. Venom is a great nick name and love his stage presence!

For next time:

The first trick isn't much of an opener. People prefer object balls as opposed to six scratch shots, three of which look silly.

The third trick is impressive but maybe use Earl Strickland's javelin cue along the rail so the cue ball doesn't reach the end of the butt.

The "finale" should perhaps be coached differently without suggesting a little to the right.

I've seen all of the vids and love Venom and the exposure but wanted to provide honest feedback.

Unfortunately Luxury a lot of times people think that you are insulting and only want to hear the good things as opposed to everything.

I like watching his shots and enjoyed his DVD but I have the same comments I had for Eagle.

Shots where the cueball hits the rack and forces the balls in or the stick guides them in just really not enjoyable. i.e. the jump shots in one second, great shot, but fewer balls or more balls without the rack guiding would be much better.

Agreed about the end shot, you have to tell the fans and the lady what she is trying to do, you can easily see that she thinks she did something by saying I made 1 or 2. Set it up with a story about how you're playing stripes and solids and you're on your last ball to win and then you need to sink the 8 ball. You make the first one and then the second one. Massey will always tell a story with the shots.

This is great to see. Good for pool, good for Florian, I have always liked all the videos.

Thanks for sharing Nathan.

I agree with this. I have stories for all of the shots in my show...definitely makes it more entertaining for the audience. It's certainly possible that since English is not Florian's first language, that he is a little uncomfortable with the 'story' thing. Great shots nonetheless!

I know you want to argue just to argue, but here is another practitioner telling you that he tells stories. Andy Segal tells stories, Bruce tells stories

Limited on time is a cop out answer. How do you set it up, you talk as you walk to the balls and as you set it up.

So here were playing solids and stripes and you are down to your last ball, you're going to hit the yellow ball, make it, and then your 8 ball.

You can get that entire sentence out in under 10 seconds with a slow pace.

He was on limited time, obviously. He did a great job with what he had to work with.

Florian had one attempt and a handful of seconds per shot. You honestly think he's going to try risky shots that could backfire? He's trying to impress the general audience. Not the die hard pool fans. These people don't care if the cue is used as a guide. lol

As for telling stories, Florian had time for a handful of sentences. I'm sure ABC news would love it if he spent the entire time talking. Of course, if he did that, then he wouldn't get time to shoot any shots. And then you'd turn around and say he should have shot more shots, and talked less. :p

lol...you can never win in this industry. Everyone is a critic.

that's great that he got some tv coverage. The guy is working his a$$ off!

I'm sure Angel Levine had something to do with it.. she's putting the event together, from what I understand.

Edit: Her reply... the real thanks goes to Rosa Lopez, her husband Miguel of ABC, Larry Schwartz, Dan Koste & Diamond Billiards!!!
(and producers Rory, Rich, Leo, Florida)

Here's the text portion of it http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources&id=8465335

It's always a little funny to listen to people try to fill ever second of a segment, with lots of canned laughs and weak attempts at humor:D Good thing Florian is fast!

That was funny that he sets up a trick shot for her with 2 wired balls, and she hits it so bad, that she cuts the ball in the corner without moving the other one, even though it's froze to it, and scratches to boot.:) Hilarious.

sorry, disagree.

Look, let's not make this out to be more than what it is. It's a quick tv spot where you have to cram as much as you can in a couple of minutes. First, take into account he's not so fluid with English that he can rattle off shotgun spurts of words, while he's trying to quickly set the shot up,describe it and shoot it, all the while while trying to pay attention to the newscasters where he has to answer any questions they're coming up with on the fly.

2nd, I don't think it's his personality to talk real fast to tell stories in the 30 seconds he gets in between shots, while running around the table to set it up too.

3rd, he's under a lot of pressure to cram in several shots in a tiny amount of time. While I wasn't particularly fond of the shots he chose to do, I'm certainly not one to question them. It's his spotlight, he gets to do as he pleases, and I most certainly think he put some time into deciding what shots he wanted to do to reach the largest audience he thought would be watching, so I have no problem supporting those decisions.

I AM smart enough to know that he is not trying to appeal to the hard core pool fanatics and deciding what shots to shoot, based upon pleasing that small sector of the 4 million people that may be watching.

Let's face it... he has a unbelievably short time to cram all of 4 shots into his allotted time segment. As stated previously, he's having to deal with 2 people cracking weak jokes, mixing in weird questions out of left field that he has to be alert enough to catch, so as to not appear to be rude, he has to setup his shot, describe what he's going to do and then execute it. Then quickly start the next one. On top of that, you got cameramen all over the place, bright lights blinding you and a whole other world going on, just out of sight of the cameras.

He did a great job for what he had to work with. He's only been playing for 5 years. He's been on a crazy schedule for quite awhile now. He just got done playing some marathon event where he was trying to break a Guinness record or something for playing the longest without a break (something like that anyways:)) and he's been going back and forth all over the world.

Cut him some slack, will ya:) Enjoy the damn thing, no need to nitpick it apart.

You got to say your opinion, this was mine.:) Nothing to argue about, just 2 people stating their opinions.

hopefully venom can get a beer commercial and get this game popular again!

Florian and I are planning to produce a 30 minute action documentary about him that we'd give free to networks around the world. Since it would be free content for the networks, they'd be very inclined to show it. The exposure could potentially be in the hundreds of millions.

It's just a question of getting enough sponsorship money to fund production costs. All we need is to find a sponsor who understands that Florian is the most marketable person in the pool world. He's the only one who can truly appeal to both pool players, as well as the general public.

Mike Massey is a terrific showman, I wonder what his show and especially his story telling was like when he was 23 years old?

Perhaps Mike received constructive feedback from guys like us and improved.

I thought it was great! Jose Sanders appears to be a pool fan. Sooo... I gotta ask... where are you and Florian hangin in the windy city tonight?

Sum up

Hey guys! Just a quick update on what has been said. I know you cant please everybody but you've got to understand that: english is not my language, and we had only like 4 minutes with 2 guys who basically onlyasked questions...how do you want i tell a story in the middle of all that?? I guess this would have been nonsense...sorry for the one who think the contrary. For the rest, to my opininion, i think the shots were already risky enough for a live TV. I dont think i could really have done better... Do you really wanted some old set up shots again??

At least it was some very good exposure for pool and i'm proud working on the promotion of pool whatever its form is ;) and yes, its Angel Levine who brought the table to the studio, she's done an awesome job !

Florian

Hey florian,

Good job!!

Keep up the good work. Let me know your schedule and if you are coming through Vegas in next few months.

I understand English isn't your first language. You also have said you don't play much eight ball so I wanted to let you know how much Americans are against scratching. Even the host said, "but I scratched" on the botched finale.

Millions of American bar players play if you scratch on the eight ball you LOSE even if you don't make it.

I believe you will get more tv gigs so my advice is to avoid every single shot you do being a scratch shot. Definitely not back to back shots shooting balls right into a pocket.

Americans relate better to object balls being pocketed. Scratching is acceptable in trick shot competitions but for tv spots less scratching will be good.

Even that jump masse shot should have the object ball in a spot where a scratch won't happen. The cue ball should be coming straight at it with the cue guide so an inch further from the pocket should help.

Then of course the finale needs to work so I suggest just telling the shooter to shoot directly at the one.

I hope you can appreciate free advice. I give it because in everything I've done I've been willing to appreciate feedback and listening and adjusting has done wonders for me.

No nitpicking involved, just comments on what I witnessed.

You as is Spiderwebcom both want to be seen favorably and damn the naysayers. If you think a show isn't better with stories so be it.

I'll tell you the best trickshot video I've ever seen is Semigh and he doesn't speak English that well, but manages to tell stored by pointing with his cue, makes animated motions with his stick when English takes and is very personable.

You've changed lately calired from the way you talk to people to everyone who is now your friend after meeting them for a short period of time. I was a big fan of your videos you filmed
And the help you've given users.

You want to assert your opinion and tell me I'm entitled to one but it sure feels that if my opinion isn't yours then it's wrong.

It started off with a review from luxury with which I agreed and rather than accept the review or critique it was his friend tothe rescue and then he comes to mention how wrong we really are

I'm not going to sugarcoat anything or be your friend and then walk outside and plot against you. I give you my honest opinion on the subject and it appears that. Spiderweb, calired, and even florian disagree.
