I swear I dont mean any disrepect or insult but....

Has this become the most embarrasing bastardization of the term "Trick Shot" in the entire history of the game?

Bouncing rubber balls , rediculous time sequenced shots.... I mean stroke skill and any assemblance of ability has been set aside in favor of wacky shots made up of grade school gimmicks, dixie cups all tangled up with college beer drinking game rules.

Its almost impossible to watch. I honestly feel bad for the competitors. :(

Sorry if that offends anyone , I just dont know how else to describe it , theres not an ounce of redeeming quality left in it.

It's been on this slide for awhile now... I would much prefer the artistic pool stuff but ohhh well..... Saddest part is that it's the only pool on TV these days and most pool players won't watch it.... Well maybe league players and teens.....

I guess there is an audience for it. I know one person who used to practice a lot and travel to artistic pool tournaments but no longer due to the change in type of shots.
 
How has it gotten like this tho? I mean even my wife and the kids here think the shots are rediculous. I remember back in the Massey days , even if you knew about pool, you wanted to know how they did that.... or how can I get my stroke that good. If you knew nothing about pool, you DID think it was magic or some kind of trick. I think people would still watch that.

Would those shots, that now fall in closer to artistic pool, not fly now? Have the rules changed or something or is there just no one who can pull that stuff off anymore?

the ridiculous part in what u just said is that u r invidious. U kno it will take u 100000 attempts to do any of those shots. It takes creativity and 100s of hours to practice to get the shots they make from the first try

Really.... if I understood that, and believe me it wasn't easy.... ;) That's some pretty big talk Jr. I've been around this game since before you were a twinkle in your parents eyes. Maybe even before they were a twinkle ;) You might wanna becareful who you call out blindly.

I'll put as much money as you can roundup....ANY amount of money at all, that I can pull off any shot made on that whole hour of TV in less than your "100000" tries and with zero hours of practice. In fact less than 1000 tries..... wait a second......less than 100 tries.

Say $100 a shot just get started?

Are we on JR ? :)

I'd guess I could pull of 90% or better of them in less than 10. And I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. Are you?

It may take 100,000 attempts to do any of those shots....but it only takes 15-30 seconds to proofread your own post. Easy tiger... I watched some of it and I agree to an extent with the OP. I miss the good ol days of Rossman and Massey doing their thing with minimal props battling each other with a lil Pelinga on the side. They occasionally used a prop, but did more stroke, speed, masse, and jump shots.

Actually if you watched it, there was a surprising number of their own shots that they couldn't pull off after both attempts. :(

Used to be the winner was the Guy who pulled off more opponents shots then they did of his, not the one who simply managed to make "most" their own. That used to be the real 'skill' IMO.

This is exactly why we saw Florian do it once, and probably never will again. It's all a gimmick. He brought out some stroke shots, and Segal found a way to bend the rules to make them easier, because he didn't have the stroke to do them.

I also found it hilarious when they couldn't even pocket the initial object balls on the Pro-Cut Diamond that was in use (from the Men's and Women's Internation Challenge of Champions that was played on the same table in the days prior). They must be used to buckets. We saw the triangles come out quickly to aid them in pocketing a ball.

All I can say to this is post up... Pick a shot from trickshot magic stick it onto youtube and I am betting several people can pull it off in short order never having even tried it... This type of competition is a joke...

The Artistic competitions that use programs and point systems are what trickshot competitions should always be... Allowing the players to create their own shots for trickshot magic has led to bouncing balls and all sorts of hokey things being introduced... It's now about who can come up with something noone else may have tried...

I wouldn't be surpised if someone learned to play the violin just so they could use the bow to shoot balls straight into the side pocket but a shot requirement would be that you have to play the muscial selection perfectly.....

If you are trying to master the hokey shots and not the shots in the shot-program or one of the many masse shots as shot by Venom or Yow you are not gonna like what happens if you make it to SBE.....
 
Trick shot magic

As of a few years ago, a new group of players decided they were going to do 'tricky shots' instead of 'trick shots'.

The end result in just a few short years is that Mike Massey quit. Soon followed by Tom Rossman. I also believe Stephano Pellinga cut back on the events he participated. Not sure if Florian will come back or not.

It is no longer trick pool shots with a cue - it has become a lot of gimmicks.

The blame belongs on whoever has the control of the shot selection. I have heard that the 'new crop' of players are the ones that keeps introducing the new style of shots. I have also heard that the producer of the event requests some of these type of shots. Either way, it has destroyed the interest on this type of programming to many fans.

Matt Braun should never have allowed the game to deteriorate like it has!

The politics has gotten quite ridiculous.

One year Nick Nckolaidis won the competition and they did not invite him back the next year to defend his title! This was not the tv version- this was the event the APA does in Vegas each year.

It is a real shame and the future looks dim IMHO.

If my understanding is correct, this event has ceased to exist. There will be no televised event this year.

The key players who control the trickshot industry are stubborn and refuse to accept change. The world of artistic pool has evolved at an exponential rate over the past 3-5 years, and these controlling players are unable to adapt. As such they change the rules, ban certain types of shots, and utilize gimmicks to push away new talent, and keep themselves in the winners circle.

It's really a shame. Their attempt a monopolizing the sport has directly been the death of it. Only a drastic change in the format will revive this part of the game, and based on the stubbornness that I've seen from the industry thus far, I seriously doubt we'll see the necessary changes in time.
