APA sending out 1099 to players?

As long as gambling losses are not able to be written off gambling winnings should not be taxable income. It is a case of the American government having their cake and eating it too.

Canada has this one right, we do not pay taxes on any winnings, not casino gambling, not lottery, not bingo, not pool. When a person in Canada wins $50,000,000 on Lotto Max they actually get the $50,000,000 tax free.

I wonder if this can be considered gambling earnings. If so, you should be able to write off casino losses to offset the earnings.

That's not actually "gambling" winnings, especially in the APA. I am pretty sure that pool games in which you actually play in is no longer considered gambling as there is not a lot of chance involved. I think it stemmed from something ChuckE Cheese got in trouble with, "gambling" on their spin to win tickets machines. They argued that it took "skill" to win the ticket to toss the coin in the proper way so was not "gambling".

Now if you won the money betting on someone else to win, different story.

Talk about adding insult to injury!

The average APA player spends a few thousands dollars or so winning their "free" trip to Vegas. :o Only to win a cue or jacket while there, then get handed a 1099. Classic.

I should stop hating the APA. They are geniuses. What's that saying? There's a sucker born every minute? And most of them are in the APA.

That's kind of funny, because I was just thinking about whether or not I want to go to the coast for an entire week for BCA. Hell, nearly all of them will be spending more than they could win there, too. Then again, maybe people should just stop taking part in tournaments altogether. Gee, you ever think about writing a book?

Maybe I should just stop listening to people that consider themselves smart because they put a ball in a hole a few times. Oh, that's right.. I don't listen to people that are full of (themselves).

Fess up.. are you also Thaiger?

I emailed our office today. They referred me to the St. Louis office. I was basically told that I signed a piece of paper that said anything above $599.00 is taxable. (That includes gifts and cash) I asked her to break down the $1,150 for me so I can understand it more.

$600 cash ** I had to pay my airfare, hotel with that money...so I basically broke even on that

$100 for Jacket ** ridiculous.. I could care less about the damn jacket

$350 for Outlaw Cue ** again ridiculous... I gave it away

** I asked her if I could have chosen not to accept the cue and jacket. She laughed and said "no one has ever declined the cue or jacket" My response was " I bet you... no one knew they were gonna be taxed on it" I assumed that I earned the cue for finishing 9th nationally in my bracket.

I play league (3) nights a week. I spend roughly $1,300-$1,500 a year in league dues, etc. I've always been told that our money went to trips, gifts, plaques, etc. I'm not trying to get out of paying my taxes. I fell like I'm being forced to pay for something that I didn't want.

They only report after $599 and they set the payouts for the brackets at $600. Go figure!!

I am curious why APA just doesnt pay the tax on that crap. I mean they already make out like bandits

I think you may have some ammo to fight this if you wanted

600$ Refund for travel and hotel (not considered winnings and not taxable). Our league will not give us those funds until we provide a copy of the travel receipts.

100$ They may have you there. It sounds pretty over priced but not bad.

350$ The retail price for the most expensive Outlaw is $155. I would think marking something up 300% and giving it away as a prize for tax reasons is not legal. I could be wrong :(

maybe this will help

I'm a little confused about getting a 1099 tax form from APA yesterday. It said I received an income of $1,050 last year. I'm assuming it's from going to Vegas in singles last April. I received NO where close to that amount. Others in my area are also receiving the same. I finished 9th and received:

a jacket
a pool cue
$100 cash

I'm just trying to understand where the $1,050 amount is coming from. Let's be honest, I took a loss for the year playing APA. (yearly dues, weekly dues, tournaments, etc) It's never been about the $$ but now I'm having to come out of my pocket to pay this. Anyone have any insight on this? I'm mad as well as others here locally in NC.

Thanks,

George

You got 1099 for $1050. I would be careful about writing off the meals part, use some reasonable figures if you didn't keep all the receipts. If they say your hotel and airfare was $600, did you keep the receipts for those expenses? If they paid them for you, request a form from whoever paid that expense for you, saying that was what they laid out. Regardless, you can still claim those travel expenses. All you league dues, and tourney entry fee's you paid, sanction fees are all deductible too. I know it's a pain, but in the end, you should be able to write off all those winnings. Did you buy any lottery tickets? With all the leagues, BCA, VNEA, APA, if you get $600 in prizes, they have to 1099 you. I have gotten them from VNEA and BCA for Vegas winnings, and can always write off the entire amount. Do you play any other tournies during the year, and stay in a motel for it? It's all deductible, up to the amount won. Remember when you file tho, that you wanna file it as "gambling winnings" and not regular income, or they may get you for Social Security taxes on it.

By the way, I am not an accountant,,,, your best bet is to go talk to someone if you can't do your own taxes. Just to be safe.

Of course, there is another fundamental issue here that no one has touched on, and that is the federal government taxing income. There are huge costs involved in complying with these laws, and it allows the tax code to be manipulated to the benefit of whomever is lobbying the legislators.

There are efforts underway to abolish the federal income tax altogether and it has the support of lots of congressmen/women and senators. you can always write your elected representatives and ask them to support the bill.

Read more about the alternative here - http://www.fairtax.org/

Unfortunately for now, all you can do is compiled your related expenses and use those to offset the earnings.

If you got a 1099, you can deducted expenses spent to earn the $1,050.00 Believe if you make over 500-600 BUCKS, you get a 1099. I know if you hit a Slot Machine for over $1,199.99 CASINO ISSUES a 1099, so some gamblers keep track of loses to balance it all out.

^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^

I suggest going to bars, gas stations, supermarkets... Anywhere that they know you, ask if they have old 'losing' lottery tickets, scratch-offs, and the like. Anything that will help offset that $1050.

I'd imagine that the part that really frosts the chestnuts is that the 1099 Form was more of a surprise than anything. Forewarned, I'm sure you (like myself and many others) would have amassed as many receipts as possible.

The APA should add an insert about this potential taxation to the member's booklet.

I'd definitely find out why that Outlaw cue was valued at $300.

.

I haven't filled out a membership application for APA lately but I don't remember having to submit my SSN. I don't remember ever having to supply it for any membership. If they don't have that they can't give you a 1099.

When you got a check you must have had to sign or submit your SSN so you should have questioned it.

Sounds like your league operator is an idiot. I went to Vegas for the 8-ball doubles tournament in 2010. Me and my partner each won like $675. Our league operator sent us checks for $575 each (below the reporting limit of $600) and paid for our tournament entry fee in Vegas which was another $100. He then bought us plaques and a few other things to make up the difference of what was owed to us. This way there was nothing for us to report.

That is because your LO is a complete idiot also, at least when it comes to tax law.

I'm gonna ask for receipts for every match I play:D.... just to screw with em..

You should then write a check to the APA every week you play. Then you can insist on a copy of the score sheet which will proved you played - btw a check in itself is not proof - you do need a receipt to satisfy the IRS.

It is indeed wrong and in IRS lingo it is called FRAUD.

Call up the APA and threaten to turn them into the IRS for FRAUD for reporting expenses illegally. You know that you get a 10% commission for all fraud turned into the IRS. I would point this out to the APA and watch them squirm. Demand a corrected 1099. Employers HATE to redo 1099s etc. with a passion!!!!!!!!! Be sure you send them a copy of your request to have a corrected 1099 issued, and send this to the IRS.

There are two ways for claiming meals - actual expenses vs. per diem. Google traveling expenses under the Joint Travel Requlations to get the per diem rates for Vegas.
