A "on fire" Oscar Dominguez runs into Francisco "Sit your azz down" Bustamante

So I'm working on the total point standing at the US Bar Table Championships in Reno, and I overheard a stunned Oscar D. talking about Busty not giving him a shot.

Now this wasn't some guy whining about a bad beat or making any kinds of wild excuses, that ourselves are prone to do possibly, or like a long list of ones that we have witnessed ourselves over the years

Most notably, because Oscar is not that kind of guy, but also because it was a shocked statement from a professional pool player who is very hot right now and playing great.

So I ask him.. what happened. In the same stunned voice and shocked look, he relayed what had happened. They're playing a race to 5 on the barbox in 8 ball.

1. Francisco breaks and runs out
2.Oscar broke, made a ball and the cueball got kicked in, Busty runs out
3.Busty breaks and runs out
4.Oscar broke, makes a ball and the cueball gets kicked in, Busty runs out
5.Busty breaks and runs out

Oscar said in at least one of those games, the balls were all tied up and he made a beautiful runout, breaking out clusters when he needed to.

So a person then could understand why Oscar was shocked at what had happened to him. Oscar was deep in the tournament, he's not out yet, but used up his free pass, next time it's done for good.

That's pretty strong, and that's a bad beat

I'm saying it's such a bad beat, that even Oscar D. should be cleared to be able to use it anytime it happens, with no hit to his reputation.:D

Nice Busty!!!! :D:D:D

You can find this event online. It's the Freiburg Masters. IIRC Busty loses the lag and Rafael Martinez runs several racks and playes safe, Busty doesn't get out and Rafael runs several more racks and eventually closes out the set something like 13:3 maybe...

Anyway Busty asks me afterward, "John what did I do wrong?", I said, "You dogged the lag." I mean there was nothing he could do with the barrage Martinez put on him.

Yes, great matches! I stumbled onto the free stream last night. In the Saez match neither player ever missed a shot! It's a shame so many people badmouth eight ball on bbs. The tough patterns and traffic make for quite a chess game. I also believe more money has changed hands in bb eight ball than all other games and tables! All the cheap games and beer games in every bar in the universe. And a thank you to Royce Brunell or whoever gave us the free stream. Streaming is one of the great things happening in pool right now.

I agree, I would rather watch bar table 8 ball then 9 ball or 10 ball anytime.

I wish some of the guys that I play with who think 8 ball is "too easy"
(and NEVER run racks) could see how it's done by the best, might change their minds.

Great play and commentary, thanks TAR

Taken from a guy who plays mainly 8 ball on a bar box; this stream has been a treat. Its so nice being able to watch the pros make these racks look pretty effortless. Hard to find some top notch 8 ball on the streams now and this has been worth every penny. The streaming is great (kudos TAR and all the sponsors) and the commentating is world class. Really nice being able to see how they select patterns. Totally ruining my weekend watching it all but I did notice after watchin these guys then getting on my table I shot a whole lot better ! :)

Personally, if guys at this caliber can't string racks of 8-ball on a barbox then there's a problem. Its really not shocking at all and should be expected from players like this.

I agree that pros will certainly run more racks then non pros, but to run 5 racks is not something you see every day. If a pro player was surprised that it happened, wouldn't you tend to believe them? I mean they're a pro player, they play pool at the highest level and with the best players in the world on a daily basis. I would tend to listen to believe them and their experience, much more so then most any other person. Not many people see more pool, then the actual players.

I didn't get to watch the action, as I was busy working, maybe some that were watching the stream could offer up some general observations about how many runout they saw during the entire day.

The fact that Busty ran out the set was less shocking to him, then that both times he broke, the cueball got kicked in the drink. It was the combination of that happening, which is odd in itself, and the fact Busty ran out 5 racks, one of them being extremely difficult with most of the balls tied up, the totality of all of that, was why Oscar was stunned.

In 8 ball, there are many times that balls are tied up and maybe you don't have any other balls around the cluster to break them out... I see a lot of safes being played in 8 ball and the safes are magnified, because it's harder to safe someone when they might have 7 balls on the table to shoot at and the know if the play a poor safe, the opponent has many balls to choose from to get back in line and run out.

I would be curious to hear the percentage of racks ran from all day yesterday, or for that matter today, since we are at the end, with the best players playing. Maybe someone can keep tabs today on the break and runs and how many times safes are played.

I guess I don't necesarrily agree with the expectation that pros are going to be running racks all day long. What I do expect is that I am going to see 8 ball played at the highest level, with the players doing their best to run out, but shooting the correct percentage shots and the correct shots. If a safe is necessary due to the percentages of making a break out or just cinching a ball and then not having a good shot on anything else, then I expect to see a nice safety played. For that matter, I expect a nice attempt at getting out of the safe and even possibly hitting the ball in a certain area to possibly get a return safe back out of it.

This has been a treat. I get tired of the closed minded types running their mouths about BB play. 8 ball on a bar box is tough, real tough.

Yes,it does take talent to string racks in 8ball but you see more lower level players run out a rack of bb 8ball than running racks of 10ball on a 9footer.To me its just common sense if you look at the both games in the same light, not just siding with the game you might play better at,its not shocking at all.I've lost to guys in 8ball who I can give 9-4 to in 9 or10ball.8ball seems to even out the playing field a bit more.As far as being close minded ,its being realistic, pros should run racks on a bb,its not that hard being at the caliber there at.

Don't get me wrong... I'm talking 8 ball on a bar box. It's LOTS easier on a big table.
10 ball on a big table is real tough, too. I don't short anybody. I just don't get hung up in the puristic prattle.

Hmmm.. after watching all if today's matches, they do appear to be running out a lot. I wish to scale back my comments somewhat. I will just stick to the fact that between busty running out all 5 coupled with Oscar getting 2 ill fated kicks to knock his cueball in on the break, was why he was so surprised.

Saez just ran over bevel, to where after Larry scratched in the break down 4-0, he gave up and conceded. Fastest match at 20 some mins.

While I was there, Nevel conceded to Beckley, Saez, and some guy from Arizona named Jason/Josh or something (twice fairly early in the match, once after scratching 2 innings in a row). He evidently does not want someone to say they beat him, or just can't handle disappointment. He has problems. Other than Earl, champion players don't do that crap...maybe he will be the next Earl....but he had better win some tourneys in the meantime.
