WE need a decent ppol hall in Dallas

I recently did repairs and recovered 4 tables at Fast Freddy in ft worth. I can honestly say the tables in that room have been hacked to death and Damn near destroyed in the owners unwillingness to pay to have things done correctly. Petrified rails, cracked and warped slates, worn out frames and sections of felt missing...
I went there once a few months ago. I'm not going back. Any owner who lets any table in the room get as bad as the one I played on isn't getting my money. Other tables were just as bad, some somewhat better (apparently). I just moved on.

How many players came to Lewisville when I was doing their tables?

Please come back to Lewisville, there are several places that need your help. Every table at Crazy 8's needs substantial attention and Fox 'n Hound could use some TLC too.

Then make your way to the Colony and spend some time at Nick's Sports bar. After that you can make your way to Fox 'n Hound on Rosemeade and Midway. There are some rails that need work and you could tighten the pockets by an inch or so...lol.

There is a lot of work to do right in your own back yard if you can convince the owners...sigh.

I don't worry about the 7 footers I have to play on because I figure they are junk going in. But I expect the 8 footers to be in good shape...sigh, again.

I've looked through every post in this tread again, and still fail to see anyone who's come out and said so-an-so's pool room has good or great pool tables to play on, which still brings me back to my first post...where are the so called "Good" table mechanic's working at?....because they're not working on the pool tables in the pool rooms that's for sure. I refuse to believe that every single pool room owner in TX fails to care about the condition of their pool tables, so they just let them fall apart and continue on and conduct business as usual.

You are right....

.... there is only one comptetent table mechanic in the entire nation, and he can't cover them all.

Glen, you know as well as anybody you can't keep the tables in a Texas poolhall playing right for very long unless you stand guard over them with a Defender 12 guage. Real poolplayers for the most part take good care of them, but the bangers, hacks, rednecks, dopers, and just plain d*ckheads will do anything from spilling beer on them, burning the rails/cloth with lit cigarettes, trying to do a self-levelling job on one of the corner pockets, sitting their 300lb. Bubba-asses on the rails, etc. How many times have you watched a disgusted player heave a cue stick down on the cloth full-force and tip first? Ever seen a peckerhead bounce balls of the slate as if they were trying to play jacks?

I'm not saying poolhall owners are without blame, but who is it that are actually f*cking-up the tables? If players want good equipment, then it's up to the players to take care of the equipment.

They do receive a lot of abuse. I have gone into a lot of rooms like Rusty's, the Rack, and Magoo's where signs are clearly posted to discourage conduct that will damage a table. This is helpful as long as there is some teeth to back it up, and the room doesn't rely on crazy patrons for their main revenue source. Sadly that is where some of the problem lies. They need these juveniles to help pay the bills. They come in to pose, posture, slam balls and cues, and sit on the rails. I will sometimes discourage these folks from sitting their beers on the rails, but do I really expect the bar to back me up ? It depends on who is working.

I liked the layout of the Magoo's in Tulsa. There was a wait list for tables on Fri. night and every table is in view of the equipment manager. Nobody there was acting out of line, but I've heard that they aren't as profitable as they should be.

This may sound dumb, but I am pretty certain the drought these last two years has been as hard on tables in some places as much as the abuse. Damn blackland prairie.

Most of you just don't get it:D SURFACE abuse is one thing, MECHANIC abuse is another. Pockets that play stupid as hell, seams coming apart, pocket liners NAILED in instead of being screwed in like they were designed to be installed, cloth pulling out of the rails, loose bed cloth, puckers everywhere under the rails, cushions falling off, facings falling off in the pockets......has NOTHING to do with the customers playing on the pool tables....PERIOD! I understand the wear and tear customers can place on a pool table, and trust me, a DIAMOND PRO AM can take more abuse than ANY pool table ever built....except the abuse from a table mechanic! I could go and rebuild any GC in ANY pool room in TX, and the customers may make it look like shit on the surface down the road....but I can assure you....the table will still play right!!!! That is all I'm trying to say.

Rusty's in Fort Worth has GREAT 9 foot tables.

Hawleys

I would think Hawleys would be the most approachable pool hall to turn around. Walter Hawley shoots on the tables himself a few nights a week, and the regulars playing on the first two nine-footers keep most of the riff raff off of them. They don't play too badly, but I'm sure he'd be interested in having three of four of his nine footers tuned up, as well as his snooker table. It's always surprised me that Hawleys hasn't done better than it has. The location is fantastic and competition is fairly stiff. As an accountant, I'm sure Walter knows what he's doing, but it's just a shame that a little more money couldn't go into keeping the tables up.

Since he chimed in (Shane - Cuephoric)

Shane (cuephoric) was the mechanic I was speaking about. Does top notch work and wont leave till the table plays PERFECT. And his prices are more than fair. Wish more pool hall owners would use him instead of the hacks they hire.

Yeah, Shane handled my table and did a great job. He spoke with Walter at one point, but Walter had an in house guy who had no idea what he was doing.... :( That was a few years ago. I don't know if Walter has changed his mind. Headed there tomorrow so we'll see....

I know what you're saying, but they could all learn a lesson from Skip & Jan's in Mesa, AZ:D

Which is funny because that place used to be known for its terrible 'gaff' tables.

It's amazing how much difference a new owner makes. Cheers to the folks who bought Skip & Jans, all the work they put into the tables turned out fantastic!

Hawley's

Hawley's seems to be turning their tables and action games around. Last night was a 9 ball tourney, tonight another tourney, and the tables are on par with Rusty's in Arlington. Walter has even brought in two snooker tables for golf games. I was impressed that they were running so many tournaments and had a decent level of players present. Tuesday nights is $2 pool, $2 all night. Looking forward to going back :)

Hawley's

Does Hawley's still have the showroom upstairs with cues for sale? I know it closed at one time but I was told it may be open again.

Bad news for one of my hangouts. Pockets (Euless) has someone (I ain't sayin' who) recovering the tables and he is doing a real hack job on them. Several of the ones that have already been done have more ridges than a Ruffles potato chip, and right in front of the pockets too. Cloth is way too loose. It's bad, real bad.

APA Regionals are being held there this weekend. It's gonna be interesting to hear some of the comments on the tables and their playability.

Hi, David.

Yep. West of Preston, north of the mall. I bought my 1997 Joss A26 there the week before Christmas, 1998.

Nope

In reference to JMW's question: No I think it's still and likely will remain closed...

Some of the biggest whiners I have seen in the DFW area are the scumbag freeloaders who wont enter a pool hall or tournament unless they get it free or got the nuts on a tournament. They then proceed to bounce balls off the floor or slam them on the table when they loose. They will play all day and ask for free water. Then have the balls to complain they lost cause of the table. This added to verbally attacking the competition.I am talking people that should know better not just the usual hackers.I can side with the owners with not sinking any money into the pool side of their bar or business.
