Butt Diameter Standard

Are there a size standards for the diameter of the butt and grip area in que making? I have a veteran friend who has grip issues with his hands and wonders if a larger diameter butt section will help. Sugestions? Thanks.

The basic diameter of a cues butt is .850 at the cues joint and 1.250 at the butt cap.

Now that is the basic size sizes will vary up and down from there depending upon the cue maker.

Mine are 1.220 and have been asked to make 1.200 . Seems like the going trend is getting smaller .

The size of the bottom is not what matters.
It's where he grips the cue most of the time.
Not all .850-1.250 butt tapers are the same .
Not all are .014" per inch for 29 inches.
But most have only one angle on the taper.
Some have two or more angles .
I've switched to 1.235 to 1.240 bottom but it does not affect the bottom of the handle at all.
There is no standard in pool cues in terms of diameter.
58" long is the industry standard.

My joint size has always been .830" & the butts are 1.255". 26 yrs ago, when I started, my butt size was 1.280". I changed, because they wouldn't fit into some cases...JER

I was going to bring this up also. My brother likes to make abnormally larger cue diameters and making them fit into cases is a problem. Your friend will have to switch to a soft case if you get too big. But if it allows him to be able to play the game then I say go for it. I'm all for helping our members of military! :)

My standard has been 1.25 double taper but lately I have been making a few copies of a 1940 Willie Hoppe Professional cue with a 1 3/8 inch butt and a .800 inch brass joint, single taper and it plays great. Yes, I use a soft case.

It's kind of funny because it was the too fat butt of my Willie Hoppe cue that got me started fooling with cues 50 years ago. Am I entering my second childhood?

Where is normally measured? Just below the wrap or above the bumper?
