Open Offer to Danny Harriman and John Schmidt from TAR

Here's the goat from HBO "Luck," named Lady Baba, between scenes in the filming of the show.

Danny may eke out a living better away from pool than if he sticks with pool. It is nobody else's decision to make, and he is entitled to choose whether he wants to quit his day job, relocate, practice to get in stroke, and then take a shot at pocketing 5 dimes or 1 dime guaranteed.

To ridicule Danny for making his choice, something that he is going to have to live with -- not us -- seems unfair. Then again, that's the climate of AzBilliards these days, to attack others willy-nilly with mean-spirited words.
I agree with you 100%. This thread is nothing more than a high-pressure attempt by the promoter and AZB rail birds to coerce Danny to play a challenge match with JS.

Your sentiments are exactly the same as mine on this. This thread is nothing more than a high-pressure attempt by the promoter and AZB rail birds to coerce Danny to play a challenge match with JS.

I don't know Danny, but wish him the best just the same. I don't see how this thread was any more than a generous business proposition that both gentlemen that it was offered to, were clearly free to accept or decline. Obviously JCIN thinks this match would be popular, so he made the offer. And like he said, if it's a no go, then he tried, and it's on to other possibilities.

Justin has been trying unsuccessfully to get a match going for three years now. So this thread amounts to a high-pressure, desperation attempt to accomplish what he hasn't been able to do previously.

Seriously? I usually enjoy your posts and think you are right most of the time; however, this time I think you are off a bit.

You have no idea whether Danny has a regular job that he would have to give up for the free roll. That makes a huge difference on whether he should or should not accept.

It is entirely different if he is "not" actually a pool player. There are alot of guys who were awesome at pool and who simply quit the game and went and did something else that made them alot more money and gave them a far better quality of life. Guys who won the US Open, guys who were world champ calibre players but they were also smart enough to see where they were going in pool.

Most of those guys, once they are gone they are gone. They are not coming into the odd tournaments, they are not on AZB posting about still not getting paid for X tournament or asking TAR for $3500 appearence fees. They are NOT pro pool players and everyone knows they went on to different things and TAR is not offering them any matches and we know we will probably never see them playing serious pool again. Maybe I am wrong and Danny went and got himself an awesome 8-5 full time job with a great company and quit being a pool player. If that is the case then that should have been his answer, not "I need more money to do it".

If he is still an actual pool player then lets be serious, this $5000 free roll between him and a single other player with all of his expenses covered is a potential payout equal to 1/3rd of what SVB earned in his 1st place in the 2011 US Open 10-Ball Championships beating an entire field of world class pros. For a weekend of work, for a pool player... If he is no longer a pool player then he should just say so. If he is still a pool player then he needs to get a grip and realize that this offer is pretty freaking reasonable. Trying to squeeze more out of TAR after they throw this generous of an offer out is out there is lame, simply say "No, I am done playing pool" and leave it at that. It is not going to get any better then this.

If it is not good enough for Danny H I am sure SVB would be happy to play someone for a chance at a $5k payday all expenses covered and I am sure you can find all sorts of top end pros willing to play against him for the same chance. Give SVB Danny's spot and let Schmidt play him, switch the 10-ball to 8-ball because SVB is flat out too good at breaking in 10-ball for all but Busta and maybe 3 or 4 other elites in the entire world. Maybe I am wrong but when Danny realizes that the offer was made, he turned it down, and it is not going to be made again he might have spoken too quickly and missed out on a good thing.

Pro pool players really can't be compared to Pro Golfers. Pro Golfers, given the purses, have no issues concentrating 100% on golf. Pool players, in general, cannot do that.

True, but think about it this way. IF a pool player was offered a match like this each weekend they would make $52,000 a year, expenses paid, for LOSING EVERY MATCH of the year. That would make them the 17th highest paid male player on the planet going off of the 2011 money leader list. That is not a terrible living for a pool player. Win only 12 of the 52 matches for the year and you are at a 6 digit income and now the 5th highest paid pool player on the planet for 2011. This offer that TAR is making is a generous one, I don't think too much thought is being made on how lucrative matches like this could be to pool players were they to become a more regular thing. The first pool player offered this and he says no, he wants more money? Seems to me like looking a gift horse in the mouth to me.

Here's how I view it. NOBODY on this forum knows WHY Danny made his decision to decline the offer. To ridicule him and call him names for a decision he makes about his own personal life, whether to play pool or to stay at home and work, gee, is just wrong, no matter how you slice it.

There's been a lot of back-and-forth colloquy about assumptions on why Danny is not accepting the offer, but the decision is his. Only he knows the real reasons. He is *not* a dancing monkey that performs for the masses. He is a human being that may be looking out for number one, and that's him.

Now about that goat....

I really liked that show too.... Damn PETA people

Here's the goat from HBO "Luck," named Lady Baba, between scenes in the filming of the show.

You know that's why the show got canceled, right? PETA folks were protesting it, because they had 3 horses who have died. It wasn't because of them being abused or anything, but the PETA clan think that animals should not be used for entertainment. At least that's what I read.

As for Danny, if he has a real job, and don't wish to play, thats his decision. Regular money, should always come first. I have left tournies after winning the winners bracket, because I had to go to work. One of them was worth an extra $1000. I took the 2nd place dough and went to work like I was supposed to.

Sadly, yes, I did know that. What a doggone shame. I really liked this show. It showed the seedy side of the racetrack. Anybody who's hung out at the horses knows these characters. Every racetrack has them. ;)

One time, when we were on the road, we stayed until the tournament ended, which was like 3 a.m. in the morning. My other half slept all the way home during the 7-hour drive in a snow blizzard from Yankee Country, snoring away. Me, I had to drive home and immediately go to work. After the tournament expenses, we only pocketed a couple hundred bucks. I enjoyed the pool tournament; in fact, we both did, truly. I was physically and emotionally drained, though, for my day job the coming week.

I have discovered that working a job for a living pays better than pool. Even when you win in pool, you're so stuck from previous tournaments, going to two, three, and four events a month, as most pro-caliber players do. Some pro players are comfortable with the lifestyle of sleeping in a car all night to check in at 12 noon to save a day's lodging expense or eating at Taco Bell or staying at a hotel facility that charges by the hour, if you catch my drift. Welcome to the American professional tournament trail.

If I'm going to end up an old goat, I at least want to do it in style, with a roof over my head and enjoying what little life I have left on this earth comfortably.

To be fair, JAM, Danny has done more than his fair share of name calling in various threads here over the years. He isn't some naive innocent unsuspecting person who happens to play pool really well. He is part of the this whole drama.

Does that justify some of the things being lobbed at him, probably not. Just as some of the things he has spewed weren't terribly well thought out, either. This isn't a zero-sum game, this forum business. If he is truly a dancing monkey, he's just dancing with what brought him...

(Personally, I think that most folks here could stand to ratchet things back a notch or three. In that, I fully agree with your perspective.)

I definitely understand what you mean, justadub, but some of those lobbing insults and ridicule towards Danny do not have clean hands, either. I have refrained from writing what I really think on this thread, based on previous posts written on this very forum, out of respect for all parties involved. I kind of wish others would do the same for Danny. That's all. In a way, I think many forum members are guilty posting under the influence of anger on an occasion or two. ;)

If Danny wants to dance for the masses, then so be it, but if he wants to sit on the rail and watch the show for a change, as he's earning a living to keep a roof over his head, then I respect that decision.

I love this thread drift. OMG, so beautiful. What is the name of the foal? Have they chosen one yet?

To keep it on topic, it seems that younger players are more eager to perform on Ustreams and the like than older players. Maybe that is just an observation I have that is unfounded, but I do seem to read that the NextGen of American pros enjoy strutting their stuff on a field of green in full view. Nothing wrong with that!

Jam ,about the goat, on the first episode after Dennis Farina picks up Dustin Hoffman ,after getting out of prison, Farina is telling Hoffman about this goat he seen at the stable with cajones as big as a basketball. In one of the scenes they show the goat from behind and lo and behold ,there they are.

Speaking of goats -- again in this thread :embarrassed2: -- did anybody watch the season finale and last episode of HBO's "Luck" last night?

The final horse race between the Ace's Irish horse and Nick Nolte's black stallion went head to head to the finish line, with Ace's horse inching his way by a nose for the almighty win.

Apparently, it was said before the race that the "goat was missing," which they thought was going to affect the race.

Then after the race, the very last scene showed Nick Nolte sleeping in front of his horse in the barn, and the camera zooms in on a black pygmy goat trotting by.

Loved that theme song on Luck ---> Theme Song.

To stay on topic of the thread, Danny may eke out a living better away from pool than if he sticks with pool. It is nobody else's decision to make, and he is entitled to choose whether he wants to quit his day job, relocate, practice to get in stroke, and then take a shot at pocketing 5 dimes or 1 dime guaranteed.

I guess everybody is angry because professional pool is going down the sh*tter in America. If the pool culture that is exhibited on AzBilliards is reflective of how the United States feels about professional pool, it's no wonder the BCA and its industry members removed professional pool from their portfolio years ago.

I wish professional pool would just die a quick death and let us move on to the leagues and recreational pool. It is sad to read the unkind words and cruel jokes about professional pool players. I get it now: Professional pool players are the scum of the earth, bums unless they have a fat stakehorse or girlfriend/spouse to support them, and each one is a pariah of the pool world.

Now back to that goat, does anybody know the significance of this goat on the HBO "Luck" series? :p I am going to miss "Luck," not as much as I'm going to miss professional pool, though. :(

Really? You love that theme song. That's got to be one of the all time worse theme songs ever. jk. But check out the Buddy Guy song in the link below. Watch it all the way as Buddy goes into the crowd with his guitar. Buddy is awesome..

Of course, Eric Clapton said *the* best guitar player he's ever seen in his life was none other than Stevie Ray who, by the way, never knew how to read music. It was all done by ear. How about this one ---> JAM!

Oh, man, check out that guy on the ivories! WOW!
