I am saving to buy a good custom cue for around $1000 or so! A couple buddies i shoot with said try a Steve Klien cue. Well i called Steve personally and asked what it would costs me for a Plain Birdseye maple cue with ivory buttcap, ivory joint, ivory ferrule and lizard skin wrap. He said he can do this for $850. Could someone tell me if this is worth it, or tell me what woould be a good custom cue to buy for that price range. I am currently shooting with a Predator 3K7, and just looking for something custom.

Any help would be great, Thanks

Ivory and Leather are expensive,,,,,,and Steve makes fine cues, so it seems in line to me for what you are asking for. Without leather and ivory it would be much less,,,,,,,,amd probably without much noticeable difference in playability.

custom cues

normally a full ivory package you can add 500.00 and up.
850 sounds almost on the low side.
happy cue hunting

I second that what Renegade said! Any real reason for the ivory butt cap on your first custom build? It won't help it play any better and you could have him do elforyn instead. For the price you get charged for the butt cap you could probably get another shaft made or at least a large portion of one depending on what Steve charges.

Do you like the feel of ivory in a joint and ferrule or just think that you need that for the value of the cue? If you want the look but don't care about that specific material so much, talk with him about what he has to give the look and really good playability. Once again Elforyn is pretty cool looking very similar to ivory and the playability might be up your alley for way less in your first custom cue. If its the ivory you desire go for it $850's really not bad for all that from a cue maker of Steve's success.

Steve Klein makes really solid playing cues with some style. If you really want to spend the whole thousand why not ask him what he could do for you for $1000 and see where that takes you? You might be surprised at what you can get. Look through the cue and case gallery on here if Steve isn't the only guy you wanted to price out and you can find examples of the other makers work there. There's also a thread on here but I am having issues finding the thread and maybe someone has it save but it's a listing of the most underrated or under the radar cue makers. Now, those guys will build a lot into a $1000 cue.

Hope that helps,

Kevin

You didn't take your buddies advice. They said "TRY A STEVE KLIEN"
I read you Talked to Steve Klien. Nothing against Klien. Never shot with one. You may love it or not. Need to try one.

BTW $850 sounds very reasonible.

I don't use ivory but surprised @ $500 for a joint ring and ferrule quoted above. Seems like $35 tops in material. Maybe its like wood. You put hours in working it then it becomes junk for various reasons. I know it cracks if too hot.

Edit: Missed the butt cap Add another $30 maybe.

need to know where you can get 30.00 ivory butt caps

I would consider that you have him build a pred shaft with the ring work to match the custom butt. Not to knock anyone's shafts but once you get used to that LD hit you will not want to go back. Tried and failed myself more than once.

cues

Yes they are, I have owned several and still have two. They are great players. You can't go wrong with his cues...especially at that price.

Good luck.

Dave

Everything dave said is based on facts.

Everthing I said is based on the fact that i sale custom cues.

Not a educated guess.

What we can buy ivory for and how much the cue maker is going to charge you for a cue with ivory ferrules joints and butt cap doesnt equal raw ivory prices.

Ivory and snake wood is in a class of its own.
both are hi risk material, the nature of the material is they crack or split........................................
The cue makers have no other choice but to charge more because the of
the high risk material.

I dont warranty ivory, if a customer wants ivory thats fine but no warranty. And i make 100% sure the customer knows this.
And ( I ) dont know of any cue maker that does.

The chance of ivory cracking is high.
Because of the high risk most customers dont want to face future repairs
bills.
I have not tried out one of Mr klien's custom cues.
But i do trust dave aka 12 squared and what he says.

The leap of faith
You could call Mr Klien up and say hey, here is my budget i want you to make me a lights out player and see what he comes up with.
That might be the special cue to hang on to.

I have nothing against ivory cues , and i own a very nice one.

Custom cues they all shoot a little different no 2 exactly a like.
It would be a plus if you could try out a few of Mr Kliens ivory cues before you placed a order.
but you cannot expect every cue to be exactly the same.

Best of luck in your search
MMike

Steve makes great cues at a great value. It will be a much better built cue than the predator, but like it was said above, it will play totally different than the ld predator shaft.

I ordered a sweet custom with an ivory joint once, and it cracked. The builder replaced it at no charge, saint that he is. It cracked again about 2 yrs later. I paid the builder $250 to replace the cracked ivory joint with elforyn, and am waiting for it now. Also just ordered another custom from a different builder with an elforyn joint. I've heard it looks and plays very similar to ivory. Also, there's poor, fair, good, and great ivory. Lots of folks will just use "ivory" and take their chances.

If you have not played with an ivory joint yet, try one first. I though I wanted one, played with a nice Arthur stick for a while, then put it away. It also had an ivory ferrule though, but the ivory feel of the hit was just not for me. I'd take away the ivory, and add on a lizard wrap, I think those feel smoother and more "high-end" than leather, and cost is not much more at all.

This quote must have be given years ago. Steve is no longer building or taking orders for plain jane cues. I'm sorry, but the thread is useless because the cue being discussed is no longer available.

P.s. My information came straight from steve that the quote was given @ 4 years ago. Not anything he would currently build or take an order for. I had checked with hime because I know his pricing very well and the quote semed very low.
