Cities with the most serious pool rooms?

Probably anywhere in Georgia. There was a place in Conyers that was going real stong a couple of years ago. $5k to $10k sets nightly. Now, Mr. Cues II in Atlanta is hosting all the action. Some pretty big action from what I hear. I'll be in there before the Smokey Mountain Shootout.

Amsterdam Billiards in Manhattan (NYC). Everything the OP stated, plus many pros play here (e.g. Tony Robles, Mika Immonen), there's one of the most popular straight pool leagues in the nation, and of course some of the strongest players you'll come across.

mr. cues isn't the only room. you can walk into marietta billiard club and get action from 10 bucks all the way up to johnny archer (owner). and there are at least three other rooms i know you can get action and / or play in tournaments that i'd feel safe in, and at least one other i know of where i don't like going in even if i wasn't looking to gamble.
to the op i haven't lived in florida for about 5 years but from what i read on here there are for sure good areas and some dead ones. atlanta is pretty strong on number of rooms and action. i was born in the tri-state area and new york was always strong, and from the looks of it still is. back in the day CT. had a lot of rooms but i'm not sure now.

And beginners are welcome too. A real friendly atmosphere where pro's and beginners often mix to enjoy the game.

+ Society Billiards, half a mile away, with a lot of impeccably maintained Diamonds and the same players who frequent Amsterdam.

I've heard good things. I'm considering joining their league in addition to Amsterdam's.

The Los Angeles area has Hard Times of course, and some smaller rooms like House of Billiards in Santa Monica and Sherman Oaks, and the Plush Pocket in Northridge where good players and some action can be found.

Chicago's best known rooms include Chris's, Red Shoes, and the IBC (though the Illinois Billiard Club is private so maybe that doesn't count).

On the New York scene I mainly hear about Society and Amsterdam but there has to be others.

Fargo, ND of course has Fargo Billiards. With a population of 100k that's pretty good all by itself.

Yup, there's plenty -- it's NY afterall.

In my area, there's Jack-n-Jills Billiard Cafe in Brewster, NY. This room dates to the early 1960s, and is a true poolroom -- signed pictures and memorabilia all over the walls. About 14 Gold Crown 1s (yep -- original GC-1s with the white metal skirts), with a Søren Søgaard 3-cushion table dating to that same period. And all the action you could possibly want -- it's an action-lover's haven.

Also, a recent new room that is both traditional and trendy is Eddie Locke's room in New Milford, CT -- "Fast Eddie's": http://fasteddiesbilliardcafe.com/ Impeccably-maintained Gold Crown IIIs (the Joss tour stops here, and Eddie himself is a meticulous table mechanic), a Verhoeven 3-cushion table, and a darts area round it out. Sure, there's a trendy side to this room (a room owner has to do what a room owner's got to do), but there's good pool action here -- and in all games, not just rotation games.

There's also Iron Willies in Yorktown Heights, NY, as well:

Not as much action here, but there's a couple very good 3-cushion players, and if you're looking for stout 14.1 or one pocket competition on a very nice Diamond (with the One Pocket ball-routing-collection diverter accessory), you can always call on moi. ;)

The Shootout is in Waynesville, NC. It is the last weekend of April. Great tourny, if you are looking for info, it is spelled Smoky Mountain. There is no E in Smoky. It is 128 players at 100$ each and it is already full of paid entries with a waiting list.
