Shortening Ferrule on Southwest?

I'm playing with a southwest. I'm playing good with it. But, I know that shorter ferrules tend to squirt less. I was wondering if it would be beneficial for me to cut the ferrules down to 3/4" or should I not even touch it? If I took a 1/4" off would it cut the wood, or just the ferrule? It has a the standard 1" Melamine ferrule on it right now. I do also have 3 shafts...

Your Q will be SHORTER & you will not notice any benifits...JER
 
I agree if You really want something different, then try It with another shaft, and not one of the originals.
 
I have a hacksaw...should I start making LD shafts? :grin:


When I first read this I was shocked. How much do those Southwest shafts cost again? An arm and a leg.....:rolleyes:

Reminds me of a few high end cues I have seen on Ebay. "My grandfather left me the cue but I didn't like that string (Cortland) on the handle so I took it off and put this here handlebar tape on it.....and put a new (slip-on) tip on it after removing (hacksawing) the white part (ivory ferrule) off the end." :yikes:

If you take a hacksaw to the Southwest can we have video? "How to make an LD shaft." :smile:


OK smart-ass comments aside. Please don't cut the ferrule/shaft. I am sure somebody can set you up with an aftermarket or custom shaft to your desired specs.

3 Cushion billiards cues have very tiny ferrules for a reason, not just squirt. I will reserve my thoughts and knowledge in this area as not to muddy the waters of this thread.

Ray Schuler made fine 3C cues and he spent thousands of days of his life experimenting with shaft taper, ferrules and ferrule lengths and was an engineer by training. I am lucky enough to have been close to this brain child and his views, protocols and philosophy he dealt out here in Palatine.

Cutting your ferrule down will definitely effect the playability of any shaft. If it's better you can be the judge. BTW, if you don't like it you can always cut it off, re tenon the shaft and then replace the 1" version for less that 50.00 from most CMs.

I say go for it, you may like it.

I agree that experimentation is the only real way to see if you like something,
But

Why chop up a desirable southwest shaft to play around?
If experimentation is the goal pick up a cheaper maple shaft and have after it.
Monkeying around with an original shaft will certainly decrease the value of the cue, even with a replaced ferrule I would think
 
Agreed with what everyone has said. I think you probably would feel a bit of a difference with a shorter ferrule, but I sure as heck wouldn't do it to one of your Southwest shafts.

Get you some aftermarket shaft and modify it, or better yet get a cuemaker to just build you one from the ground up with the shorter ferrule.
 
Get a partial LD shaft and have a cuemaker match up the ringwork and tap it.I had an old JF Southwest and this is what I did,it played great with the partial 314 I matched up to it and kept originals in perfect shape for the future buyer.
 
You mean there are still 1" ferrules out there ?
They need to get with the program. :grin:

You will devalue that SW shaft drastically if you cut the ferrule.
Have one made as suggested.
Pretty tough to copy SW's taper though.
 
Alright, thanks for the feedback guys. Probably best to leave it alone. I always preferred the shorter ferrules for the low squirt, but I'm playing good with the cue. It was just something I wondered about.
