Worst thing to happen to pool in recent memory?

For many road agents, I'd say the Internet.

Nowadays you can get the line on an unknown before he walks through the door.

internet ruined that and also online games and netflix. pool rooms are empty because there are other things to do.

Women's tour falling apart. Good exposure for the game, and it would have been chump change for ESPN to fund the tour.

With the Stream getting 400-500 paid viewers, how many people do you think were watching on ESPN??? Probably not enuff to make it worth while for them to produce a pool event. Its sad but true. Pool has problems.

By far the worst thing that has happened to pool in recent memory is the disappearance of nearly all the American male pros from the WPA World Championships.

With declining participation in the most elite events and against the world's greatest players, these players are squandering the opportunity to hone their skills against the creme de la creme and it threatens the prominence of the American male professionals as significant figures in the world pool scene.

Worst of all, there is no end in sight, as nearly all the top American pool professionals seem unconcerned about their declining station in the world of competitive pool.

"R-e-a-l-l-y!"

Pool Leagues and Pool League handicapped mentalities have ruined pool. I don't mind giving up weight if you bet something and we negotiate the spot. Walking into a bar with junk equipment knowing your going to give up 10-3 to any random clown with a pulse and a cue is sickening.

Don't hate poker. It's not poker's fault. Minesota fats once said," You can be the best gin player in the world, but if no one in the joint plays gin where are you?" Well, I can tell you. There are countless poker wanabes that can't wait to give their money away. Meanwile, not a poolpayer in site that will bet fat meat is greasy. Easy to see where the huslers are going and why.

Since your talking about the "WOES" of the World of Pool, today, how would you like to walk into a Bar and play an opponent rated a 2, then find out it was Cincinnati Clem.
"BET, he----- didn't lose a single match as a 2,"
and the "ART" was watching him play shots S-A-F-E!
Now there's a tale of woe for ya!:poke:

WPA championships? what a joke. If i see dennis play shane in some event in california, what the **** do i care about some japanese guys playing each other in doha? the best players in the world find a way to play each other, and i enjoy watching it no matter what stage it's on. that's why I thank guys like JCIN and the TAR guys for perpetuating competitive pool between the "creme de la creme" in a format and environment that i actually give a shit about.

In all seriousness,I think when guys are blatantly chopping, throwing matches so there buddy can get Mosconi points, brings a cloud over the sport thats difficult to remove.

Yes i would say that .000000000000000000000000000000000001 % of pool players heard about that and maybe 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of layman know about it . A devastating impact on pool.

I did a PPV stream for the WPBA once. It was right at 100 paid. Seriously.

ESPN never paid anything for pool anyway. WPBA paid for production and then gave the content to ESPN with some ad rights on the first couple showings. It worked fine as long as casinos were willing to pony up the $100K or so per event which paid for the production. Now not so much.

Wanna know the secret to pool on TV? One pocket edited like poker. Heard it here first kids.

X2 highkarate

I'd rather watch a match streamed for pool players to watch than watch every third game of a match on television. A big thanks to jcin and tar for putting those things together.
The loss of the men's tour was just the beginning imo.
It used to be easy to walk into a pool hall and make a little side money. Most pool halls had at least one house player they would back against a stranger for at least a couple sets before adjusting or pulling up. It was a blast coming up through the ranks at our local pool hall too. There was nonstop action and always a game to play or sweat. It sort of made the thousands of hours we spent over the table worth it.
Then came the poker boom and people could bet big from their recliner without putting in the table time to acquire skill. Sure, there is skill in poker too but not like pool. Online poker only takes reasonable math skills and a little luck.
All four of our local pool halls have closed and we now only have social pool (leagues). Our town used to be one of the stops for many road players going across the country. Now the only real pool tables are in homes.
Oh, and screw espn. I'd rather watch golf than their lame trick shot coverage. That shouldn't even come up in my guide as pool in the search. Few things in life are more boring than that crap. (imo)

I would say 99.9% of the serious players I know(and I know a few)heard about all the mishaps of what went on.Its your opinion if you believe people don't know but I'll take the over that the serious players have heard about it.I know in the room I play in here in Canada that every player knew about what happened in those incidents and thought it was a black-eye on pool.

This age of instant gratification is the worst thing to happen to pool...billiards takes work and will test you to your mental limits if you truly want to improve.

To many players are complacent, lazy, and satisfied. They settle for being an "ok" player and never push hard, loose to better players, and come back to win.

My best lessons have come at $$$ per rack to better players..but I know kids that won't bet water is wet to learn anything. It's sad how lazy people are.

Perpetually being told that the way I enjoy this game is somehow wrong.

Examples:
I play in leagues ... in bars :shocked2:... on barboxes! :yikes:
I don't gamble.
While I'm always trying to get better, I also realize that this is essentially a hobby and so I'm happy just to play and have fun with friends.

We may be able to get a bet here. What part of Canada are you from?

In poker the suckers have an excuse for losing not like pool where you just get beat out in the open. Poker is simply a decision game with no execution required. Its the sweetest set up in the world for someone who is willing to grind out what in my mind would be a terrible way to make a living. Plus it has been "cool" for the last few years but thats wearing off.

While poker has way more money in it than pool, it is quite possibly the only endeavor on the planet than can compete with politics when it comes to the levels of douchebaggery evident in its participants.

God I hate poker.

I honestly think people got a major disappointent when the IPT took off like a rocket headed for some distant planned on a mission, than sunk like an Aircraft Carrier hit by many torpedos.

There was a real excitment about the IPT, the scare of the IPT, IMHO will never heal.
