Flooring preference

Getting ready to tear out carpet in the pool room. <<<==Wife thing:scratchhead:
Table is getting replaced too:)

What is your preference of flooring for playing pool on and why?

I'm leaning towards a shorter loop carpet, or short nap, something that kills noise and is not cold on the feet. I feel more rooted on something that has a little give.

Squishy carpet bothers me for playing longer periods, 4 or more hours.

Hardwood, vinyl, cork, bamboo, carpet, painted plywood?

I have a commercial carpet. It's a really short nap. It doesn't show any wear around the table. It's the type of carpet that can unravel. I don't know what you cal that kind of weave, but I've had mine for 10 years and I don't see any wear at all and I play quite a bit.

I'd avoid wood or hard flooring as those don't do well with flying balls. The sound of a ball hitting those floors is terrible and with tile or something similar, I'd think a falling ball could crack that.

Hey Paul
Just don`t let the wife turn the ''man cave'' pool room into a girly pad. lol
I have Berber carpet with a foam pad under it in my pool room & its very easy to keep clean & its very comfortable to walk on as well. GL on the room & please post pics when you get it done. Take care

did you have trouble with the table settling when you first installed it? That carpet is kind of thick, plus the pad.

I would definitely stay away from the laminate (wood) flooring you see everywhere these days, the stuff makes a click-clack sound when you walk on it.

I think the short fiber carpet is good either wall to wall or in the 2' squares.Or hardwoods with rugs/carpets.

Hey spanky79
I just went & checked under the table legs & it may have settled a tiny tiny bit, but to the naked eye, its not noticeable at all. I have had my table on this carpet for 8yrs now. I`m very happy with it. Hope this answers your question. Take care

Our billiard room has a wooden floor. No complaints so far and it compliments the wood in our table and room furniture.

Commercial grade short loop carpet is designed for high traffic areas. The amount of traffic you produce around a pool table is 20-30 times the amount of traffic in any other area of your house.

And your wife will have more patterns to choose from than you can imagine. I'm sure she'll find one that goes great with Simonis Tournament Blue

We have used synthetic sisal carpeting in two basements and really like it. The 1st we had for 8 years with no problem & the second & current time we have had it installed for 2 1/2 years, again with no problem. The synthetic sisal wears really well & is easy to clean if needed. I think we have a 1/2" 8 pound pad under it. It's comfy and durable and not too soft. The table set right in quickly without a lot of movement. Of course we set up the frame with the slates on loosely for a couple days before setting it up.

Good luck.

Dave

That clickety-clack sound is the hind feet on my wife as she goes from a canter to a gallop. She threw a shoe at the mall just last week.

I put cork down in an exercise room and absolutely love it

Thanks for all the input folks.

Don't worry Jeff, I'll make sure the room's only used for girly things between sets:wink:

I'm still leaning towards a short nap/berber carpet that will take the heavy traffic.
This room will certainly look and feel different when I'm done. An 8' charcoal Diamond Pro is the table that's on my mind for replacement.

Just my opinion, there are lots of flooring choices for a room like yours. I'd go with cork in that particular room due to all the natural elements and the lighting. Cork is slightly softer feeling than hardwood and surprisingly stands up to foot traffic very well. It also has a great dimensional appearence to the eye because it is not all one soild color or pattern. Nice room BTW and I really like the wood stove, throws tons of heat and really cozy on a chilly day..

How about rubber mat flooring? I was considering the kind you assemble by locking them together as seen in garages.

I dealt with the issue this way: Wood under the table and carpet in the rest of the room.
